The military could probably save a ton of money in the long run just in healthcare costs by increasing BAS and teaching soldiers how to cook.

I don't get BAS and there's no kitchen in the barracks. Your move, LT.

In other news, I'm contemplating a vegan diet. I know a warrant that did it for many years, and my civilian friends seem to have all become vegans, and love it.

Going vegan was probably the best diet related decision I've ever made in my life. My weight is lower than it was in high school. I thought.it might make me feel run down or not be able to run as well, but we took an APFT yesterday and I improved by 20 points (265). I probably would have done better if it hadn't been so cold, my feet were numb all the way through the run. On top of that, I have crazy amounts of energy, my recovery time from workouts has decreased to almost nothing and I don't feel loving old anymore. The key is not just veganism, but adopting a whole-foods, plant based diet. Vegan junk food is still junk food. I'm tweaking my workout slightly, but if I could come off of leave and take three weeks and get my best APFT ever, I'm hoping with a month of solid diet and training under my belt I can add another 20 points.

If you're still skeptical but have an open mind, I highly recommend "The China Study" by Dr. T. Colin Campbell. It is probably the most comprehensively written book on nutrition I've ever read, and quite mind-blowing. I was skeptical too, but I think I might be a believer. Semper Plants.

I don't know about eggs, but dairy is probably the worst. Once I gave up dairy I started slimming down dramatically. Also, in "The China Study" milk proteim was what dr. campbell used tp give rats cancer. funnily enough, he had actually set out to prove the opposite (that milk protein was good for you). Then he discovered that the group of rats given the high doses of milk protein invariably gave the rats cancer. It's a seriously mind-blowing book.

I guess Vegan is a bit of a misnomer, but I do avoid dairy, eggs, and meat as best I can. I don't give a poo poo about animals, really, and if I eat something with a little bit of meat or egg in it, I don't really sweat it. But if it doesn't grow in the ground or off of a tree, I don't eat it. I made my cutoff weight for my height for the first time ever, and after only a few weeks I put up my best APFT score yet. If someone wants to call me a girl for not drinking milk or whatever it's fine, I'm leaner, stronger, and faster than I've ever been and I don't feel tired and lovely all the time. YMMV, but I think I'm gonna stick with it.

If you can run a 4 minute mile you need to say gently caress the police and start training for the olympics.

Starting a Smolov regimen on monday. I did the first workout on friday (it was hell on earth), and didn't realize my gym that I just joined closes early on Saturday, and isn't open at all on Sunday. The first week of the Smolov is three days of squatting in a row, so I'm going to start over next week. For reference here it is -

3 x 8 - 230
5 x - 245
2 x 2 - 265
1 x - 280

Good god. I was late, so I busted that out in 25 minutes, showered, worked an eight hour shift, went home, and slept like a baby for ten hours.

I have three kettlebells. I have a 45 minute routine I do in the morning before school. It's not the be-all, end-all of exercise equipment, but it's pretty drat good.

Pros -
Kettlebell swings beat the poo poo out of running. I haven't ran in months.
I don't have to go anywhere to work out. I wake up, take my pre-workout, and get to it. (There are many pluses to not needing to go to a gym, especially during resolution time)
The cost of three kettlebells is about twice as much as an annual gym membership and they're yours forever.
As someone previously noted, if you can fling around a 32kg piece of metal with reckless abandon in a controlled manner you will most certainly be anything but weak.

Cons -
The potential to build strength just isn't as great as it is with plates/barbell, for obvious reasons. If your goal is raw strength, kettlebell movements are only going to supplement your workouts.
weights heavier than 32kg would be kind of a pain in the rear end to own.
The initial prices can be off putting. If you want one try looking for a sale online.
The potential to break your own poo poo is pretty real. It's a big piece of metal.

Mind posting your routine?

Something like this -
One arm press - 3 x 5 (both sides)
Two arm press - 3 x 5
Goblet squat - 3 x 5
Overhead squat - 3 x 5
Kettlebell swings - 3 x 1 minute (although try to go for longer, see if you can make your heart explode!*)

(I started with a 30lb, moved up to a 55, now I'm on the 70lb/32kg)

Pushups - 5 x 20

(I like to vary the different hand positions, although some days I'll do 2 x 50)

The hundred
The roll-up x 5
bent leg stretch x 10
straight leg stretch x 10

(Yup, that's all pilates stuff)

plank x 1 minute

The sweet release of death x 1*

*Please do not actually attempt to make your heart explode and/or die.

EDIT: Progress pic I took last night. Am I full of poo poo or not? You decide!

I absolutely cannot do swings without feeling like I'm getting nothing out of it. I know that means I have to be doing them wrong, but so far everyone who has tried to show me has been poo poo at explaining or demonstrating it.

The only thing I can say is to keep your abs taut, back straight and push through your heels. Your arms should stay straight, but the only thing they should really be doing is holding on to the kettlebell for dear life. I feel like it helps to imagine myself pushing the ground down while pulling my shoulders back. I feel like even if you were doing it wrong swinging around a piece of metal for an appreciable length of time should wear you out. Maybe you're going too light? I've never had anybody explain them to me - I just read (and re-read) articles on it, like the Pavel books or the book by the cross fit guy, Jeff Martone. You can always look up tutorials and examples on youtube, as well. When I say it's vastly superior to running, I ain't lying. gently caress running. I've achieved better results in a fraction of the time with kettlebell swings.

I would also point out that I do the 'russian' swing that ends at chest height, not the cross fit style 'american' swing where it goes completely vertical. I feel like I would probably break some poo poo if I tried that.

So I enlisted in the Army and am in DEP, and I'm shaving down my run time to at least the required 8 minutes for the 1 mile so I can actually ship to Basic. I've got a bit more than a month at this point and seem to have plateaued at 10 minutes. Anyone have any suggestions as far as running form or anything? I try to run a mile a day at the very least but I haven't seen any improvement for a couple of weeks where previously it has been steady improvement.

I don't know if it's just a mental thing or not, but instead of pushing myself I tend to just pace myself, slow down when I start to run out of breath instead of just keeping on even if I feel like poo poo, stuff like that.

I don't know what your diet is like, but increase the amount of fresh fruits and vegetables and clean water you take in, minimize junk food to whatever point you can stand. If you're heavy, even 10 pounds can make a huge difference in how much effort you have to put in to running. If you regularly drink milk, keep this in mind: Mark Rippetoe recommends hard gainers take in a gallon of milk a day to spur weight gain. If getting huge is not your goal, get rid of the dairy. Other than that, the only way to get fast is practice, practice, practice, as the others have said.
