Isn't this what the Vietnamese have done? I remember reading somewhere they have basically gotten rid of their character based alphabet and now use a romanized system and only use the traditional characters for aesthetic purposes I don't know how comparable Vietnamese and Chinese are other than that they are both tonal languages with lots of homonyms
