Hey air-, 'cos I know you had it, how is Tweason'ale?

Not talking to me, but I've had a few bottles of Tweason'ale and found it unremarkable. Not bad, but light with not much taste.

On Friday I got a growler of DFH Aprihop, though, and I really liked it. Solidly hoppy pale ale with a really nice flowery bite of apricots. It balanced the sweetness nicely, though the apricot did finish on the cloying side. A little two-dimensional though.

Long as I'm listing beers I've had recently, I had Breckenridge's Agave Wheat and I like it the most of the stuff of theirs that I've had. A warm, almost...graham crackery taste? Maybe I'm nuts, but I liked it. I also got a Sly Fox Dunkel Lager, and I think I'm sold on dunkels. Really happy Sly Fox just moved to my hometown of Pottstown, I wouldn't mind using their dunkel as my go-to fridge stocker.

Neither, Dogfish Head is terrible.

That's not true. They take a shotgun approach to craft beer, and that can involve some incredible successes and incredible failures.

Speaking of, yesterday I got to share a bottle of both the Noble Rot and Red & White, the two recent "these are sort of wine" beers they put out. Noble Rot is mediocre. I tried treating it like a white wine and served it along with some cajun marinated catfish. To its credit, it stood up, but it didn't stand out.

I had the Red & White later that night, and actually thought it was something a little special. I might not buy a 12oz bottle of it, but if you get a chance to try it...it's tasty in sort of a weird way. I don't have a honed enough palette to give you horseblanket and catpiss estimates, but I thought it was interesting and tasty.

Neither Noble Rot or R&W actually made me think of wines, interestingly. What do other people think?

Drank an ommegang abbey ale tonight. You don't need me to tell you it's good stuff. But I can tell you it goes ridiculously well with girl scout cookie thin mints. That hint of mint really brings out a lot of flavor.

Skipped the KBS release at my local bottle store today. They were giving tickets at eleven, then raffling them off at three. Last night I finally tried making beer can chicken with a can of Ten Fidy. Unfortunately it totally flopped. Problem one was that the chicken I got sucked - really low quality, wasn't even plucked well. Problem two I was anticipating as a possibility - instead of boiling over and infusing the chicken with deliciousness, at the end of 90 minutes the chicken was done but the can was as full as when it started. I think it's just too thick and rich.

I was really disappointed, I'm going back and trying again soon. I'm going to get a lighter beer this time, I'm thinking Sly Fox's dunkel maybe. And definitely a much better chicken. I wish I had a grill, making beer can chicken in the oven is just vaguely emasculating.

Beer can linings are designed not to leach into the beer, so...Whatever. I'm not going to worry about it. I'm not taking a blowtorch to it, if it can't handle an internal temperature of like 200 some degrees then that's some crappy aluminum.

I'm also morally opposed to spending $25 (source: Amazon) on a stainless steel replacement for the simplicity of sitting a chicken on a can of beer.

I haven't seen Lost Coast in my neck of the eastern/central PA woods yet, but I'll keep my eyes peeled! I definitely need to use a lighter beer. We tried reducing the chicken fat and grease with the leftover ten fidy into a gravy, and it worked - kind of. It was really, really bitter, though not totally unpleasant or inedible. But I wouldn't try it again.

I finally went to the Taproom in Lancaster, PA. They serve beer from Spring House Brewing Company. I happened to go with a friend on "Oyster Fest," and of course they had an oyster stout on tap. We got a sample, and it was not at all what I was expecting - not "fishy," you know, and I guess it tasted more sort of...open? Than your average stout. Hard to describe. I wouldn't order it, necessarily, but I'm more open to the idea now then I was.

I ended up getting a pineapple pale ale that was, surprisingly, delicious. Very strong and unmistakeable taste of pineapple, so you do have to like it, but I was shocked at how well it complemented the bitterness of the hops.

The food is good too! My friend got the fried oyster sandwich and said it was great - high praise, coming from a foodie like her - and I got the mile high nachos. Nachos are an easy thing to do, and it's in the extras where a restaurant really proves itself. The jalapenos were relatively fresh, the chili was solid enough to actually be served on its own, and the guacamole was almost authentic. Okay, that doesn't sound like a glowing review, but it actually exceeded my expectations and I'd like to go back soon.

If you're in downtown Lancaster, it's a very decent place to get lunch. Service is a little slow, but you can see how busy they are, and they're still friendly and helpful.

I'm a big fan of Midas Touch, it's really the only DFH I buy with any regularity. (If Chateau Jiahu weren't harder to find and wasn't only sold in bombers, that would change, but in the meantime...) It's just a nice refreshing beer, sweet and dry like a nice white wine, but because of the hint of grape it's really reminiscent of a good mead.

Sah'Tea, Noble Rot, Red & White, Saison du Buff. In the fall, Punkin.

I had Sah'Tea about a month ago. I'm a DFH apologist and actually a big fan of their ancient ales (got to see the molecular archaeologist who spearheaded it when he spoke at the AIA conference in Philly, it was awesome). But I just could not get into Sah'Tea. It's not that I really dislike the taste of chamomile - it's fine, I have no real problems with it - but as my friend remarked when tasting it, it sort of tastes like food. Sort of soapy, chamomile, food water.

Wait, poo poo. I just went and looked at the beer shelf. I'm thinking of Ta Henket. I'm not sure I remember what Sah'Tea tastes like. I really wasn't impressed with either. I still want to try Theobroma, though.

My favorite DFH is Chateau Jiahu, that crap is out of sight. Really delicious. I also like this year's Aprihop a lot. Red & White was honestly like a better version of Noble Rot. Burton Baton is good.

Their Chicory Stout makes me sick, I think I'm sort of weird about it. It's actually the only beer I've ever drain poured, and I felt terrible about it, but I was actually getting nauseated.

Unfortunately, I haven't had the chance to try any Shmaltz, so I can't be of any help comparing them. I did take that drain pour slightly out of context, though - the first DFH chicory stout I drank, I thought it was okay, but not great. However, it was actually the second one I opened, I just couldn't make it through.

As a stout, I think it's okay; it is entirely the chicory aspect that I remember disliking. I think it's worth a try, and I don't think it's a bad beer. I was drinking it because my dad had actually bought a case of it, he liked it so much. If you know you like their 90-Minute IPA, it's probably worth trying the chicory stout, you can really tell it's a DFH brew, and I mean that in a good way. I just don't like it, and that's totally on me.
