Go with the geuze first, as it is sweeter of the two, imo. Then, after that sets in you can sip on some quads and trips and get krunk. I would eat an appropriate meal with either style as well.

Really sad that this Biere de Miel is about to be gone. My fourth foray into saisons, and this one has to be my favorite (Hennepin, Saison Dupont, and Victory S.d.B. preceding it). The aroma was amazing. Smelled like fresh apples and honey, on top of a bed of the dankest yeast. Taste is pretty much the same, lots of fruit with honey and mild yeast at the end. Carbonation? Perfect. Could drink this all day.

Just realized why there is no carbonation in my Ten Fidy. It was bottled at the end of 2010. What the gently caress. I have one can left to bring back to the store and ask them, politely, why they are selling 2 year old beer. Still tastes good though. So recently I discovered 12 packs of Racer 5, and that has been p much a gift from the IPA gods. Been buying it every other week. However, today I tried Bear Republic's Hop Rod Rye PA. Holy loving poo poo on a shingle. This is the most delicious thing I think I have ever drank. It has a sweet malty character that masks the 8%, along with hoppy bitterness, balanced with caramel/fruit taste to near perfection. It's like the bready goodness of a Brooklyn Lager mixed with a Racer 5. And at $5.99 for a 22 oz., this my friends, I can get behind. I need to try Ruthless Rye now, too! I have also been trying to get into barley wine. Scooped a sixer of Bigfoot yesterday and was blown away similarly. I've had a couple others prior, but the way SN balances all of their beers is remarkable. Just a great example of the style, and extremely drinkable at 9%. Got that along with a recommendation from an employee, Galaxy Hopped Barleywine Ale (Brothers' Reserve Series) by Widmer Brothers Brewery. Not sure if anyone has tried this, but he told me it's a fairly mellow Barleywine but complex still. Drinking that this weekend. Also BA released the American Craft Beer Festival brewer/beer list. I only made it through to letter C and I'm already giddy. Widmer Brother's Reserve Galaxy Hopped Barleywine Ale (9.5%) Thoroughly enjoying this barleywine. Appearance is a beautiful brown-red mahogany, smells like dark fruit and brown sugar. Deep fruit (plum) and bitter hop notes at the beginning, and then goes into a lingering malt/sugar that leaves you wanting more. Finishes nice and dry. This bottle was a year old today unbekonwst to me when I bought it, and boy is this a good beer. Very much reminds me of a strong dubbel, that must be the Belgian candy sugar used. Comparable to Bigfoot, would definitely drink again. Gets better as it warms. TenaciousTomato fucked around with this message at 20:53 on May 11, 2012 |

There is a whiskey thread. Use it. In other news, Founders Curmudgeon's Old Ale - smells like apples, caramel, and booze. On first taste you definitely notice the alcohol, but it calms down into a nice caramel, fruit, malt sweetness that is balanced very well. I actually like the alcohol presence a lot, starts off strong but after it settles the complexity of this beer really shines. Next Old Ale I want to try is North Coast's Stock Ale. See if I can find it this weekend. Not sure I'll be able to, if not I think I'm going to be trying Prima Pils and Brooklyn Pilsner to compare - haven't had too many of that style, if any. edit: Also had Oskar Blues Old Chub. Liked it a bit more than Innis & Gunn Scotch Ale but I can't say I'm a big fan of the style. TenaciousTomato fucked around with this message at 05:46 on May 22, 2012 |

After looking up Brooklyn Pils on BA I'll probably mix a six with one of them in it and buy a six of Prima by itself. About Old Chub, anything by Oskar Blues is pricey around here since I live on the east coast, although I got really lucky with that 2 year old aged pack of Ten Fidy I somehow found for $10.

Picked up a variety pack of Widmer Brothers' offerings yesterday which consisted of their: Hefeweizen, Drifter Pale Ale, Rotator IPA, and '12 Dark Saison. The hefe was alright, had a pretty decent smell going for it, got a whiff of banana on top of the yeast/citrus but the taste of it was lacking, and is just too light to be considered a hefeweizen. Next, was the Drifter PA which was a good light pale ale, had a nice balance of malt and hops but nothing to write home about. Rotator IPA, light bodied as most of their brews are, wasn't a favorite IPA by any means, but wasn't horrible either. Being a 'spiced' IPA I guess you notice it after a while but didn't do much for me. Finally the dark saison for spring is pretty much your average saison, dark fruity taste and smell, again too light of a beer for me, but at 9% I could drink at least a few of these if I wanted. Galaxy Hopped Barleywine was their best I have tried, not completely satisfied by any of the others except the pale ale, maybe. Also scooped a Lagunitas Lucky 13 Imperial Amber, will update on that. Lagunitas PILS - One of the first craft pilsners I've tried; a pretty basic, refreshing and even sessionable beer. Nice balance of a little hop and zest mixed with the bready malts at the end. Victory Prima Pils- Similar to Lagunitas' version, however this had a stronger hop profile. Wouldn't call this style my favorite by any means, but I would imagine beers like this are best when you're in the heat or on the beach. Nectar Humboltd Brown (brewed with hemp) - What more can I say than a decent, earthy brown ale. Peak Organic IPA - This was good. A nice earthy IPA, great carbonation and very smooth. I would seek this out again. Lagunitas Imperial Red - Delicious. Nuff said. Lagunitas Lucky 13 Mondo Large Red Ale - A big red ale made by Lagunitas, you already know. If you don't know, it's a great 9% brew that has flavor complexity yet balances the hops and malts very well. A hint of alcohol lingers at the end to make sure you know what you're drinking. I want another of these, ASAP.

Had a Palate Wrecker today for the first time. I think it was better than Hoptimum, just more balanced overall, hoptimum has more hops? Not sure. Also drank a Pretty Things Jack D'or saison, which was good, much brighter in color than most saisons I've had, yellow almost like a wit, but a very drinkable beer.
