Would this be long enough to mess with the flavor, do you think? You'll be ok. 75 minute is really one of the best session beers out there right now. I'd drink that frequently given the opportunity. That's a really good point you bring up. Slight sidetrack, but I noticed that tap prices here typically range for $7-12 for a "full" pour (12-16oz glasses). Given the prices, unless there's a limited/draft-only type offering, I'm also less inclined to go with the larger craft breweries like Stone, New Belgium, etc. if there's a more local brewery available on the lineup. Drinking at a bar's become a treat for me nowadays seeing these prices out here. I was used to $4-5 pints in most places, and I'd infrequently buy a $7-8 glass at Common Table/Meddlesome Moth in Dallas.

Recently tried Left Hand Ambidextrous and it was outstanding. Every aspect of it (Milk Stout, Oak Aged Widdershins, Wake Up Dead Coffee Stout) came through and I'm surprised it was still balanced without being super boozy. I'm really gonna have to stop myself from buying another sixer of Oarsman. I know nothing about berlinerweiss beers, so what else is worth picking up?

SUPER HASSLER posted:It seems like there're two breweries that are trying to go all Belgian-style in Austin now. One is Jester King, which has BA street cred out the rear end and has been going all Brett in the past half year-ish. The other is Adelbert's Brewery, which has a homepage right out of 1998 (and labels from about 1978) but do some seriously awesome poo poo -- I had the Naked Nun witbier of theirs and it was among the best American versions I've had. I'm past the honeymoon period with Jester King after experiencing infected bottles/gushers on a few of their more recent releases. Le Petit Prince was pretty disappointing. The "farmhouse" variants of Black Metal and Commercial Suicide are both a far cry from the original releases, and to me, using this new yeast is not a positive thing. I'm pretty hesitant on buying their beer nowadays since I just figure, if it ain't broke, don't fix it. Out of the two Texan tripels I've tried, I do prefer Adelbert's to Real Ale Devil's Backbone. Since you were at Hay Merchant, I figure these had to be on draft? I haven't seen any of their beers on tap in North Texas. In other TX news, Deep Ellum Brewing has started up their barrel aging program and the first release will be a barleywine aged in rye barrels. Doesn't sound like Peticolas has released anything lately, and their beers thus far have been underwhelming (especially after having Karbach in Houston- IMO they are doing the best German styles in TX now. Weisse Versa and their doppelbock are both killer). The Belgian-style brewer in the metroplex area is Lakewood Brewing, and they have put out the most impressive beers of the three within Dallas city limits.

That was the colossal shitstorm that completely underestimated the number of attendees to expect, and they ran out of water so people were getting dehydrated right? I mean, those idiots did plan a festival at a park in Houston during the middle of July last year. Just be on the lookout for the next Camp Beer events. I'm good friends with the organizers and they always could use volunteers (aka, you get in for free, you pour beer, and it's cool to partake).

I really like the roasted and hoppy twist he does on a saison in Existent, and it falls well outside of conventional beer styles. The use of Brett and saison yeast put the Premium on a whole new level compared to other session beers with corn and rice. I can't wait until he has a bar/storefront in Baltimore.

I agree with SH to just go alone and start mingling, I'm sure it'll still be fun. It's also a great opportunity to make friends with people in the industry. A lot of reps are really cool people, plus you never know if they have any special beer that they may end up pouring later on. Also SH, I'll take that Karbach Weiss Versa and raise you a Sixpoint Apollo. Holy gently caress, I can see why there's an Untappd badge dedicated to this beer and I'll drink can after can of it this summer. Despite being filtered, it's still really crisp without being watery. Excellent summer beer and I will find a way to get one down to you at some point in the near future.

So Baltimore people: I'll be heading to Camden Yards to watch a game tonight with some visiting friends who are Rangers fans. I've read that the craft situation there has improved. Where are the good taps located in the park? Does anyone know if that new Dempsey's brewpub there has good beer? I guess I may have to be the guinea pig since it sounds like it just opened not too long ago.

The whole place was going nuts and even O's fans were rooting for him when he blasted the 4th one out Rick Dempsey's brewpub is basically a step above decent homebrew, but not something that'd win awards at a competition and I wouldn't even call it a crappy brewpub. The place was dead and very glad I was able to try a couple samples. They had an IPA, red ale, wheat, and a stout, all were unremarkable. Also, most of the vendors that have craft taps are located along right field. All the craft pours range about $8-8.50, but I couldn't quite tell if they would do 16 or 20 oz pours. Basically looked like session beers from GI, Flying Dog, and Heavy Seas.

I can see that point about some of Stillwater's beers being overspiced/herbed. I've been on a fernet branca kick lately and that's likely why I don't have a problem with something very herbal like the flavors you'd get in Debutante. Even if a good number of his beers "taste the same", I think it's interesting to pick out the little nuances among those beers, especially if the spice lingers in the background. I guess it's more fair to say that I haven't disliked anything I've tried.

danbanana posted:I've heard good things about Olde Hickory and Duck Rabbit but unfortunately haven't gotten my hands on them yet. Will expand a little: Duck Rabbit's got a reputation for quality across a wide set of styles (both year-round/seasonal) and I want to try much more of their lineup. Their Milk Stout's what caught my attention, and their Rabid Duck is dangerously sippable for a RIS (reminds me of that one malted milk ball beer from Draughthouse in Austin but ramped up ABV). The Schwarzbier and Baltic Porter are supposed to be among the best in NC within their respective styles. Milk Stout I believe is year round (and the rest of the year round beers are also good), but the other three aren't in season right now. Olde Hickory: Death by Hops is good. It's got the palate destroying element ala Green Flash Palate Wrecker or Stone Ruination. The difference is the spicier/grittier/dry take on the IIPA style; that part of the sip is really assertive, yet the beer is still enjoyable. Event Horizon's a solid bourbon aged imperial stout; doubt you'll find that this time of year though. And I brought up Pisgah towards the end as I was a fan of their sessionable stuff and it'd be cool to try the Valdez series, but their distro kinda sucks.

Have you tried Bell's Oarsman and New Belgium Tart Lychee? Latter isn't within the definition of the style but it has a lot of the flavors, refreshing nature, and easy drinking that are traits of a good Berliner. For those with more experience about this style, here's something I remember from my trip to The Bruery last year. My clueless self didn't catch on at the time, but I do recall seeing people using some sort of syrup (being added through the squirt type bottles you'd see at a coffee shop) with their pours of Hottenroth. How does that impact the flavor?

Had a blast with my TX trip, and good seeing you again SUPER HASSLER! Tried a a couple new-to-me beers: Brasserie De Silly Scotch Silly: It's like a thinner and easier to drink Old Chub. Smells like butterscotch and it went down quick, but with a rich hazelnut finish after every sip. Karbach Bourbon Barrel Hellfighter: Well gently caress, this was impressive. I liked Weisse Versa and Pontificator, but this seals Karbach as my current favorite Texas brewery. Easily one of the best beers made in Texas and right up there with (512) and Rahr's bourbon barrel aged offerings. Excellent balance between the roasted coffee, woody, bourbon, and chocolate flavors. Creamy mouthfeel with a potent bourbon kick that lingers. This was on draft at Whole Foods on Waugh, and it had used a blend of barrels including Evan Williams, Elijah Craig, and Old Fitzgerald. The bartender mentioned they did a one-off with Buffalo Trace barrels for Hay Merchant. The other newer Houston breweries like Buffalo Bayou and No Label haven't put out beer that in my opinion matches Karbach, so I can't wait to see what else these guys have up their sleeve.

I'm gonna need a new liver by the end of this week. Sierra Nevada takeover at Churchkey wasn't as bad of a clusterfuck as I expected. Standing room only of course, but I managed to wedge myself into a spot that got me prompt service. There were plenty of interesting beers and I wish I could've tried more. Wood Aged Brown Saison (aged in French Oak Syrah): Saison characteristics hardly exist, if at all. Lots of sticky brown sugar and grapes with a strong barrel smell. I was worried about it being so one dimensional andit turned out to be pretty delicious. Exportation: ExPorter aged in pinot noir barrels. Someone next to me mentioned that the base and this beer were brewed for a past Philly Beer Week? Looks like a porter but then the smell doesn't match. Malt and tartness (think dark fruits, berries, grapes) woven together with a vinous body made for a really unique beer. RepoTerroir: Quite a polarizing beer because of the huge spice/vegetable flavors. Has some both traditional/nontraditional as it is a collab between SN, DFH, Avery, Lost Abbey, and Allagash. Some guy said it reminded him of a vegetable flavored jolly rancher. I found it oddly refreshing because of cucumber flavors but I wouldn't call it amazing nor a drainpour, mostly Wood Aged Life & Limb: This was the letdown of the night. The pour looked amazing and dark as balsamic vinegar. Didn't really get a lot of wood/barrel notes on this and it was just a ton of sweet flavors: licorice, vanilla, and toffee popcorn.
