So I just found out that my local liquor store a) keeps the good beer in the back to be asked after, and b) had two six-packs of Nugget Nectar left.

Hell yes.

Now I can trade one bottle of this for all the whales my heart could desire! No I will not actually do this.

No worries! It's been pretty hard to find in my part of Central Jersey, and I've been hearing a lot of good things about it, so it was mostly excitement over finding it AND finding out how to get some cool stuff at my local store that I didn't know existed. :)

(I can confirm what lazerwolf said too, the beer dude at my store mentioned that he was trying to get in on Troegs' second batch of NN. I'm assuming it's just the first batch that people are going berserk over, and things will calm down when the second wave hits.)

Two crazy different beers to talk about tonight!

First, Older Viscosity from Port Brewery. Holy crap, this is a hell of a beer. Both times I've seen it, it's been $20 for a 12oz bottle. A friend and I split a bottle, and it is an amazing sipping beer - thick and rich and full of flavors and warming-ness.

Second, Sorachi Ace from Brooklyn Brewery. It's a pretty good saison (sharper than I was expecting), but for some reason it absolutely hits me with that 'holy poo poo this smells exactly like pot' like nothing else I've encountered before. I've seen it talked about in this thread, but it's wacky to encounter for myself!

I need to pick up a six-pack of Troegs Hopback Amber Ale tomorrow, I've heard it talked about a lot and I need something to cleanse my palate before the insanity that will be St. Patrick's Day.

It's just completely fascinating to me how everyone reacts differently to the various hop smells in beer - I have a pretty strong sense of smell (compensation for being deaf, wahey) so I figure that's part of it besides the whole palate thing.

There is an insanely good bottle shop next to the Trader Joe's in Orange that has a MASSIVE selection of singles and various craft brews. I picked up a 2006 barleywine there that absolutely blew my mind. I can't remember the name of the place, but it's right on Old/Boston Post Road. And obviously keep in mind they don't sell alcohol on Sundays in the state still, though I hear that there's yet another attempt to get that changed. Time will tell!

vvvv I can confirm that this year's OG is really quite good and doesn't need aging to be drinkable at all.

I have a Palate Wrecker as well, but I'm going to save that for another night.

Loving Deviant Dale's, quite honestly! I'm on my second tallboy in 2 days, and it just continues to impress. I also got a bottle of Southern Tier Unearthly, and I'm not too fond of it in retrospect - felt overly syrupy/sweet.

My dad keeping a well-stocked fridge (mostly Newcastle and Stone stuff, but still) and being very encouraging. Also :hfive: to La Fin Du Monde, I have a bomber of that in my new beer fridge right this second. Mindblowingly good.

Another question - how do you all mark your cellared beers with years and stuff of when you got them? I know some beers have dates printed on them, but not every brewery does that.

This particular liquor store (Super Saver Liquor on Route 22, for any central Jersey beergoons) is kind of notorious for having that happen - their beer aisle is crammed FULL and very deep, often with cases of beer hiding parts of the shelves. If you're sitting on a bottle of Stone 16th Anniversary IPA, I'd recommend moving it into the 'age for kicks and see what happens' pile. I opened a bottle last night that had been in the fridge for a couple of weeks, and was really disappointed - the hops had fallen out of it, and the lemon was turning astringent. There are two different styles of barleywines - American barleywines, which are hoppier, and English barleywines, which are smoother/less bitter. Brown Shugga is the former, but there are many great examples of the latter that you should definitely try out.

Check this list out to get an idea of what you might be able to find in your area: http://beeradvocate.com/beer/style/152 I know that Weyerbacher is readily available here, and Blithering Idiot is not terrible. Sucaba is just GREAT though, if you see that I highly recommend snagging it.

Glad you enjoyed it! I find that when you're drinking hoppy beers, that first initial sip of bitter can really put you off if you're not expecting it and it's what turns a lot of people away from IPAs after being given a taste by a friend/family member. (Also it was probably the ABV for Brown Shugga, that stuff is insidious)

Not that many people know of River Horse, nor would most people here consider drinking their beers if they came to their area, but I have to say avoid any Belgian beer they make. I'm guessing they have no idea how fermentation temps work, or have no temperature control and always ferment too high, but all of their Belgian beers are loving banana liquor tasting bombs. Absolutely gross, I drain poured their Tripel last night and did the same with their Belgian Freeze a week ago.

Their Oatmeal Milk Stout is excellent though.

Arnold of Soissons posted:

that's odd, as I recall the Freeze was the only thing they made that I thought was decent enough to have a second time.

The oatmeal stout is fine, but it's a buck more than Left Hand Milk Stout, and it's not any tastier, so I only bought it the once.

e: and the brewery, I don't even know. I didn't do the tour so maybe that's really good (it's not) but the tasting room is basically all the ambiance of standing around drinking in someone's shed that they slapped some drywall up into. It's loud if 3 people are talking, there are honestly I think 4 stools, 2 counters, and when I was there there were 60 people. And the beers sell at regular retail price for bottles (if for some stupid reason you want to take some home,) there are no free tastes unless maybe they offer one after you do the tour, and the pours at the sad little bar are like regular bar price, which is pretty cozy since they have like 0 overhead. And they do the lovely tiny glass pour, too.

Triumph is a bit of a chain, and I know some people don't like it, but there is one like 2 miles from River Horse and it is 100% better to visit.

e 2: wow I did not know I had that much to say about that.

My best friends live in Lambertville/New Hope, so this discussion is somewhat relevant to my interests, given that I'm out drinking there at least 1 weekend of every month. :shobon:

River Horse - Agreed that their tasting room is small and cramped as hell but I give them credit for the fact that it is consistently still to overflowing. Also their tasting pours are like 2 oz for $1, not sure where you got the whole 'regular bar price pours' thing from. I have the same banana issue as Midorka does with their Tripel, and everyone thinks I'm crazy for it. Go figure. I'm actually going to be at their stout release party this coming Saturday, because what the hell, it's cheap and they throw good parties. But of course it's not that awesome to visit normally, it's a working (and highly overtaxed) brewery with a tiny tasting room so people don't walk away disappointed. (also they probably can't sell bottles for cheaper than market price because of distributor laws or something, I remember they couldn't start selling bottles of their new release till after their distributors had it in NJ)

Triumph - I wish I liked their beers a bit more than I did. When I started drinking beer I thought this place was the poo poo and was getting a growler of whatever at every opportunity. Lately I've cooled off a bit towards them, but the main advantage of that place is that they have enough variety in their beer that I can generally find something I like. Overall this place is a great choice for food and trying lots of good beer, if you're in the New Hope area check it out.
