http://www.stonebrew.com/calendar/default.asp?intEventsID=2095#2095 That's pretty cool. And if that's not enough for you, we'll also pour you a beer straight from our fermenter tank into your glass. Buy a token at the bar for the freshest beer we've ever served to the public. It's so fresh that we won't know what we're pouring til that day! Tokens may be purchased from the bar at any time before 7pm, but fermenter access is from 6pm to 7pm ONLY.

Any of you ever heard of Brewhop in San Diego? Basically a brewery your that will take you around for 5 hours to any SD brewery. Was thinking of doing Alpine/Lost Abbey/Alesmith, but alpine is so far out of the way and the tour lady said they dont really do anything special for the tour clients whereas everyone else does (why does this not surprise me). I think I may actually do Stone -> Lost Abbey/Port -> Alesmith -> have them drop us off at Pizza Port Ocean Beach. poo poo imma be drunk.

Angry Grimace posted:Alesmith isn't really worth going to on that kind of tour, in my opinion. In general, they have nothing on tap there that they don't bottle beyond one selection that's readily on tap everywhere, i.e. My Bloody Valentine (which is a rather plain Red Ale). Carlsbad is a bit out of the way to end, I'd prefer to be closer to our hotel in the Gaslamp district. But point taken on Alesmith, I'll bring it up with the tour lady.

Angry Grimace posted:Ballast Point will always have at least 3 special beers that aren't bottled/distributed much or are seasonals if that's something you find interesting. Don't ever get roped into going to the Home Brew Mart location though, they have a lease on there that won't let them sell pints. They have more weird/limited brews, but you can't buy anything but a taster and can only buy one of each variety per day (really). Interesting, the tour guide said we should go there since they (the tour company) do unlimited tastings. So it looks like we might be doing: Stone Lost Abbey/Port Alesmith / Ballast Point (might split time here) Dropoff at Pizza Port Ocean Beach. I wanted to do Alpine but we may just find a local friend to take us there. Any suggestions?

Their malt bills aren't very similar, Troeg's uses no specialty malts and Firestone Walker's is a more traditional American IPA recipe. Troeg's uses 5 different hops while Firestone Walker's uses six different ones, but only 2 of the hops are used in both recipes. One of those 2 hops they share is only used as a bittering addition in the Firestone Walker beer, so you basically get no discernible flavor from it in a beer like this. I'd like to say that's one of the ways you can separate a beer snob from a beer nerd. A snob wouldn't give places like SN or Anchor the time of day, while nerds know that those kinds of places not only put craft brew on the map, they still pump out solid, if not amazing, beers in all aspects. My family acts surprised when they see me drinking SA Noble Pils. Sierra Nevada I usually only buy if its semi-fresh... looking fowward to the new HQ in NC, hopefully that means fresher beer for VA.

Goddamn, made it to Toronado in SF tonight. Biggest bunch of dickbag bartenders I've ever met in the beerscene. If they didnt have any Russian River or Deschutes that I wanted to try on tap I would have left instantly. Never before have I seen such a tremendous rear end in a top hat at a bar.
