Except it's a lovely hook because it has nothing to do with Taiwan being lucky. His whole intro is about how fantastically lucky Taiwan is to be so well off without resources. But it had nothing to do with lucky. It was just smart planning. Besides, it's not like he brings any kind of commentary to the information. He's more or less reporting on someone else's study and acting all smug about it.

How hard is it to get a teaching gig in Taipei? Going on tealit seems all the positions are for outside the city proper. I loved the country when I visited just only want to get a job there if it's in Taipei (I'm a city person). Have 1.5 years of TEFL experience in Seoul. No certs though.

I've been wondering about how exactly to go about that route. Do you recommend just buying a hotel room for a couple of weeks? How hard is it to find an English-speaking hotel? And should you get your ARC set up before you start applying to jobs? Also, I don't expect an answer to this question, but if I applied to Hess for an August hire date, would they interview me now or closer to August? The last thing I heard from them was "We'll be in contact very soon" like a week and a half ago and the anticipation is killing me.

Hello Taiwan goons. I'm going to move to Taiwan on a working holiday visa in a month or so. I have enough savings to support myself without working for some time (although finding a job would be good, I don't want to spend it all) and would like to stay in a few different cities before I decide on one to settle in. Hotels are too expensive but I've found some nice apartments in Taipei on this website. Here's how I did it 6 years ago now. Toss my resume, a little letter explaining who I am and why I want to come to Taiwan, and a picture of myself to every school that seemed decent on Tealit. I think I sent out 25ish. About 8 replied, only 5 were interested if I was currently in the country. 3 were interested and told me to fly over. I flew over with enough money (and a friend's apartment to crash in), and hit up those places. They liked me, I chose the best seeming one, and they hired me. That's my story.

You won't get a work visa until you have a job willing to sponsor one. What you do (assuming you're American) is applying for a 60 day visitor visa prior to your arrival. In order to get one, you have to purchase a round trip ticket with a 60 day time window. So, book the trip, apply for the visa, and come to Taiwan in that order. You'll then have 60 days to do whatever the gently caress you want in the country. Travel, party, apply for jobs, whatever. After you get a job, your new employer will begin the paperwork to convert your visitor visa into a work visa. Once you have the work visa, you can apply for the ARC. Technically, it is illegal to work during this process, but no one seems to care much. If you just land in Taiwan with no visa, you're granted a 30 day landing visa. This cannot be converted (last I checked anyway) into a work visa. The way I did it was come here on the landing visa, go to hong kong for the visitor visa and then come back to taipei. Hong Kong or Bangkok trips will run you about 9000NT round trip (300 dollars or so). I usually sleep on a park bench in Hong Kong, because I'm a giant beast man and no one's going to gently caress with me anyway. Just find a park with a couple homeless dudes around and you're set. (Homeless dudes mean that there'll be no cops and the prospect of getting shiv'd is pretty low).

poo poo, as a 5'9" 17-year-old I did that several times. Also I'd say unless you really do have the money, don't get accommodation from that website. gently caress me is that some expensive living. NT$40,000 for a two-bedroom apartment? That better be loving nice, since it's a piece of piss to get a reasonably good two-bedroom apartment for half that.

JV's hostel in Taipei is friendly to people moving to Taiwan to teach. When I stayed there there were two other cats doing the same thing, and the employees were actually helping them find a place. Love that hostel.

I'm not sure if this is what open24hours is talking about but just to clarify some things some countries do indeed have 'Working Holiday Schemes' with Taiwan which seem to allow acquisition of an ARC without already having a job. http://www.immigration.govt.nz/migrant/stream/work/workingholiday/taiwanworkingholidayscheme.htm is an example for New Zealand, after a little browsing it seemed England had something similar, maybe Germany and some others. It also looks like an employer's dream as it would be super easy to pay under the table when they're not even supposed to be working at one place for too long anyway. If price is an issue, hostels are fine for short term and often include AC and wifi. Just check the reviews to see how their English is. edit-  I did find some stuff on the boca.gov.tw website that actually was related to coming to Taiwan for what it's worth.

That NZ one is for Taiwanese going to NZ, not the other way around. I don't think there's a NZ to Taiwan counterpart. Which'd make sense, 'cause I know most working holiday stuff in NZ is tourism-related or fruit-picking, but I can't imagine what some random Kiwi kid who speaks no Chinese is going to do short-term here.

My roommates before included: - 1st one was a guy who almost never cleaned his floor (it was a 2 story apartment) so the downstairs was a complete sty. Super nice guy though. - Then 2 other guys. One was cool, the other was an alcoholic. It wasn't so bad, but my own drinking was getting pretty out of control being there so I was actually pretty happy when they said I had to move out (another guy moved in, and there wasn't room for me). So basically just your typical roommate situation should you choose to get one.

I can't recall exactly maybe someone who applied more recently can tell but I think checks are only required by the individual school and are not for the visa. I can tell you that for Hess a year and a half ago I for sure only needed a check by the police of my suburb.

As far as I'm aware, you only need a full FBI background check for getting permanent residency. I don't know about Americans, but I know as a New Zealander I've never had to produce a criminal background check for a normal ARC.

I'm not really sure about the pay. My guess is 500NT if you are an actual native speaker and less if they can get away with it. It's 5-6:30 MWF and 5-8 TR. I'm not 100% on that though. They will not sponsor an ARC. This is strictly a part time evening position. There will likely be morning and afternoon hours available in the summer, but you'll still probably work the same number of hours. However, the work environment is great. Everyone here is awesome. There's very, very little bullshit associated with the position. We have a homegrown curriculum that's phenomenal. You don't have to grade homework or come in early or stay late. The only unpaid time is breaks between periods and they even give you dinner on Tuesdays and Thursdays. The biggest pain in the rear end is coming up with a graduation and Christmas show and Halloween game. But on the plus side I can introduce you to the wonders of the bar (that's singular) scene.
