It's more that I feel jaded for being told in mid the 90s that I can become anything I want when I get out of school, and now I'm getting paid $11.50 an hour in a field I didn't study for. I think at my age I should be getting at least $19hr, but in Portland that seems to be a 4yr degree/2-3 year experience position.
$11.50, hold on there Mr. Money Bags. With a four year degree, 5 years in journalism, 4 in university IT and 2-3 in various skilled trades I was pulling in $2.00 to $8.50 per hour. Before the recession even running the line at a high end French place I was making $11 and getting minimum wage in IT. $250 per 100 hour week as a trained carpenter. All this in a place with rent more expensive than Chicago and almost more than parts of NYC. $11.50 isn't so bad it seems. Even as an artistic director for the Cleveland Symphony you aren't making much more than that.

That's bogus. I don't care what everyone else makes, I care if I make enough for what I want, and for me that wouldn't be enough. If you're not satisfied with your wage, pick the wage you want and work backwards how to get there. Can't do all that is required? Adjust your goals. Rinse and repeat. No shame in that.

Where were you making that 2-8USD/hr with that much 'experience', Hati? Realistically I think your experience, education have nothing to do with being a carpenter or line manager so they don't actually add up to or count for anything; you're basically coming to negotiations as a high school graduate with zero experience. If you're not satisfied with your wage, then focus your time and energies on one thing. As sad as it is, the days of the Reneissance Man are over (trust me this saddens me). If however you are happy with what you do, then say fsck the wage and do what makes you happy, also a great place to be, but then you can't be critical of others's desires for a higher wage as you are gauging success on a different while equally acceptable scale.
In South Carolina. Factor in a city that is built on Old South networking and an economy where almost all entry level jobs are unpaid internships and you get that situation. Most entry level jobs requiring a bachelors after the recession in that city became an unpaid internship, except for tech fields. IT at the college was minimum wage as were almost all of the college jobs. Getting down to $2 was done by not getting paid the overtime that you worked, it's a choice of work the job for no overtime or lose the job.

Took me three years of saving up to escape, now I am in Korea with a roof and food. WOOOOO!!!!

So, my company's looking for technical writers again, requirements being that your English is loving flawless and you know how to write. If you're a goon, chances are you have some tech competency already. Not sure how many people we're hiring exactly, but to my knowledge, it is "plural".

Job postin' is here(hope it's okay to post this here seeing as it's pretty relevant):
http://www.forumosa.com/taiwan/viewtopic.php?f=147&t=114673

I should note that it's a jobby job, with all its pros and cons vs teaching.

Pros:
  • Regular hours that don't vary every week
  • Tech poo poo is pretty cool
  • Job is stable if you don't suck
  • This isn't a skeevy under the table job where they don't support an ARC or pay you varying amounts in envelopes
  • Job experience that looks like job experience
  • Actual perks/employee welfare/holiday bonuses/stuff here 'n there
  • Vacation days you can actually use without requiring favors to get a sub
Cons:
  • It is in fact a jobby job
  • May not be as interesting/rewarding as teaching for some people
  • Full-time job means it's much harder to find time to study Chinese if you're serious on learning fast
  • Corporate environments aren't for everybody, like dirty hippies
  • If your tech knowledge sucks, you suck. This isn't really a con, it's just a statement. Also, work will be difficult I guess.
This all applies to tech writing in Taiwan in general.

I love this time of year. Too bad it's not at the time when my contract is up. ASAP like in weeks or months? Are you allowed to release a salary range? It may be worth it to ditch out of Korea.

Oh man Chinese names :ohdear:

I could see that. Korean names though, like the impossible to say Hyo/효 :airquote:, well actually people could never say my last name in the states, and it's a standard German name, so I suppose it would be useful, especially if it's not said slowly and clearly.

What's the chat service of choice down there. I've been seeing people use whatsapp or line but never both.

That's what I was afraid of. I wish the FTAs would affect air fare too. Welp, anyway, Taiwan in a typhoon on vacation is still better than Korea in a typhoon on vacation.

I keep walking by our soysauce braised pig feet places in Korea and it reminds me of this distinct Taiwanese food smell. I smell it in the little bento like boxes on the train and in a lot of meat dishes. Sort of spiced soy and it's the most wonderful glee inducing thing.

Check this out. It's an online implementation of DnD, it lets you make virtual maps and tokens for all of your characters and monsters and run the tabletop portion of the session over a net connection if you have to. Super useful if someone's going to be absent for a game but still wants to play remotely. Takes a bit of time to set up, but is totally awesome once you get going.

We used it and it worked well, but even with that it was near impossible to get people to actually 'show up'. Even when we all lived in Seoul, but this is the same place where a 20 minute subway ride is a long way.

Hopefully you guys have more fortitude than us. It's a nice system.
