Did the problems occur after installing the cams and removing the compression release? We rode the dunes this weekend: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VKM86kDrT3w We decided to take it easy and mess around at the dunes rather than ride in the Desert 100, but we mistakenly took the hard way up a ~2k foot mountain. The final hillclimb was pretty intense, you have to cut sideways and zig-zag your way up until the hill flattened out. Despite being braced, I crunched a radiator on the last hill climb. Awesome, more WA riders! I'm in Bothell with Spiffness/Zool and a few others in the general area. Zool and I have been trying to ride motocross lately, and more of us are up for trail riding as well. Gold Star MX is the regional motocross series, with a race in Monroe this Sunday and a two day practice/race at Washougal on April 26/27. If Monroe gets rained out this week I'm down to ride trails, and you're more than welcomed to come battle for 3rd-to-last place on the track with us! We went to the Mattawa area two weekends back, which was a blast. It's not much further than Tahuya with a refreshing change of terrain. My coworker clarified the location; we went to the Beverly Dunes and some goat trail up to the edge of Saddle Mountain. Apparently this is the ideal trail head: https://www.google.com/maps/@46.7735239,-119.884416,323m/data=!3m1!1e3 My coworker claims there is plenty of fun, but not overly technical, desert riding in this area. I'm eager to check it out sometime before Summer.

They have alternate lines for different skill levels; no do-or-die jumps. They've made changes this year to make it more noob-friendly, but I can't find any video showing the new stuff. I've seen people ride dual sports there and have fun, so I think you would enjoy it.

Thumpertalk has a decent list of riding locations, but they're not all the same quality. Tahuya is one of the larger ORV parks on the west side with year-round access. http://www.thumpertalk.com/where-to-ride/ The NMA has a summary of the larger ORV parks in the state, too: http://www.nmaoffroad.org/page/show/288202-washington You can also access a lot of private land through poker runs and harescrambles. NMA is one of the bigger organizers, but others pop up on the regional thumpertalk forum. We can post in here next time we ride Tahuya, too.

I raced arenacross this weekend in Monroe, WA. I raced 450 beginner, won my qualifier but took 3rd in the main, 7 riders total. The gates were at an angle to the main turn, such that the right most gate was nearly a bike length back from the inside. I had last gate pick for the qualifier, but the best gate was open. I got the holeshot, took defensive lines, and it was over before I knew it. Same thing happened in the main, but I stalled in on the second lap. I was getting bad arm pump from slamming the rhythm section and was relying on the rear brake too much. Qualifier: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OCmerkObifU Main: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kzc_1jWS2tc The riding is insanely fun, but you spend so much time waiting around. I was there for 6 hours and rode two practices and two races, it couldn't have been more than 20 minutes total. There were 260 entries, 43 motos. I'm doing the KTM demo day out at Washougal on the 24th! Two laps on each SX bike, it should be fun! Best part is I don't have to wash any bikes afterwards. I took motocross lessons yesterday from an ex pro. We did turning drills, focusing on body position and timing. No matter how many times you read "elbows up, leg out" it's a lot more meaningful to get input on what you're actually doing.

So the KTM Demo day was a blast, but grueling too. 150 riders, 18 bikes, two laps on each of the 6 models. In the morning it took nearly an hour to get through each line. Slow riders (7+ minute laps) and 5 crashed bikes didn't help the lines. KTM did provide free water and cliff bars, that helped a ton. The two strokes were fun but ultimately they reward a very aggressive riding style; anything less than wide open manhandling wasn't very enjoyable. Especially with the 125 and 150, the trade off in weight didn't justify the harsh and narrow power and necessary attention to clutch and gearing. Then again I'm 6'4 220lbs, go figure I don't like the kid's bikes. The 250SX's bottom end was much stronger obviously, but I was missing the 4Ts. The 250F was incredible. The engine was strong everywhere and kept on pulling. It felt a lot like my '14 350. It was easy to be smooth and fast and it didn't wear you out. I could ride that bike all day. The 450 was really fun; immediate, smooth power that sounds awesome. There is a big single that leads into some sand. Every other bike struggled here besides the 450. It was a highlight to lean back and power out. I was the fastest on it but it wore me out. Horesepower hill is deceptively steep; a good run requires a fast run through the whoops. I started on the 350 first and didn't get a good read, my primary observation was that the bottom end was much stronger than my '14 350. The suspension was great across the board. Besides the 125/250 (which I bottomed) I had no complaints. I clipped the landing of a medium sized table with the front on the 250F with no complaints. My '14 was pretty harsh until I sprung it for my weight. TL:DR - 2T is too peaky, 450 is fast, 250 is smooth. Videos https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Qrip5Zbm7Es https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bjr0MKJ1fKc At the end of the day I missed my bike and was wishing for more track time on a bike setup for me. Washougal is incredible. Non of the jumps are do-or-die, and the flowy berms+long straights were a nice change over the fair grounds track I normally ride. I'll try to make a practice day soon... I'd argue against street legal dirt bikes, depending on your plans for riding. Off road riding is not kind to street legal equipment. Mirror, lights, plates will break when you crash. If you plan to explore fire roads but avoid obstacles and aggressive riding, street legal is fine. But any sort of trail ride quickly will thrash that gear.

Before I'd be bottoming on the bigger jumps, even when landing them smoothly. Now I can case poo poo all day and not feel it. The long table at the end of the rhythm has been a big mental block for a while but I finally cleared it: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tMLUVIxPmOQ&t=18s This track is inside a NASCAR oval.
