I'm totally down for this... blowing poo poo up, bonfires, wrenching parties, whatever. My yard is also available for blowing poo poo up, I'm right on the CT/mass line on 84/90 in Southbridge.

Summer Nationals sounds like a great idea.

(side note - if I can get enough wood together I'm probably having a bonfire tonight, will be welding bits of metal onto my jeep all day, free beer, anyone who feels like dropping by is welcome to)

(and I have lots of rusty MJs, where lots = two)

As for a big get together, Kasteins got the place, now all we need is beer and science to blow poo poo up.

I'll supply the beer, or at least some of it.

Science someone else will have to bring :haw:

Warning: people have described my place as anything from "Ken's house is an adult/gearhead playground" to "oh my god, I can hear the banjos, paddle faster". It's a good thing code enforcement is lax out here.

To give an idea of what I can get away with out here, I've had several dozen 30' bonfires, many days of using an angle grinder and a lot of air tools, a few drunken nights that involved firing the air raid siren up, and more fireworks than I can count fired off here... and the police have never shown up. Usually my neighbors either show up for the party already drunk, or don't care. They don't really like REALLY loud noises after about midnight.

There was also the time I put a quart of gasoline in an aluminum fire extinguisher cylinder and threw it in the bonfire... the explosion was so loud the neighbors thought I fired a potato cannon at their house (200' away) and the fireball/mushroom cloud was approximately 25 feet in diameter. That *almost* got the police called on me.

Thermite and exploding engines won't even get anyone curious. We can't fire weapons in the yard, but only because this is Massachusetts :byodame: and Guns are Evil :byodame: and I'm inside town limits.

Worst case if someone gets stuck, it's an excuse to fire up the MJ or the 5-ton and take a short cross-town excursion to solve the problem.

Feel free to bring all the parts for the lift whenever we have this shindig (when is it, anyways? I'm down for installing it on the spot if anyone else is, or hell, even if not, as long as there aren't any weldnuts to break loose... and that's what I have a welder for anyways.

I am not sure if I should tear the 5-ton apart and try to have it 100% fixed for this, or leave it together and hope it holds up.

Side note - a friend of mine from college who lurks AI just dropped me a line and asked if he was welcome, even as a primarily on-road AIer. Just to clear things up, I am not really in charge of this (at least I hope not, I suck at planning), it just seems to be probably happening at my house since we can get away with poo poo there... and pavement pounders are welcome too, if I've given the impression that only offroad/rally types are welcome I am quite sorry, that is incorrect AND it's not my place to say what kind of event this is anyways. Show up!

The only real rules if it happens at my place are -
don't piss off the neighbors (no explosions or loud exhaust past about 11-midnight)
don't get the cops called (see also: no explosions resulting in a mushroom cloud > 30ft diameter)
no glass in the bonfire (I hate picking up broken glass. metal is fine)
don't burn the house down
don't break things in the house that are not supposed to be broken. There are however plenty of things that can be broken.

oh, closed-toe shoes are probably a wise choice.

alright. I have run the "fun route" several times in the last few days, it's starting to dry up, the last of the ice melted about a week ago. I made it through with my MJ with half a cord of firewood in the bed in 2wd today. The 67 should make it fine unless you have street tires on it... and even then, only one mudhole will be a problem, and that's what I have a 20 foot snatch strap for.

ACEofsnett, this guy?

Spotted in the Ocean State / Big Y parking lot on 131 a few days ago.

Spotted in front of the Advance Auto Parts in the same strip mall, emptying my wallet even further...

The weather's getting nice now, and I'm spending as much time as I can cleaning the yard up and fixing various issues with my insane automobiles, so hopefully this can actually happen sometime... also cutting and splitting a ton of wood so as soon as it dries out a bit, a bonfire is required.

No worries. I use the dirt road into the back side of my property but first, a lowered Audi can make it through there (been done), and second, there is about a mile of mostly empty parking along both sides of the paved street in front of the house, I just don't use it.

I had to drive my tractor to a customers house today 6 miles each way and it was the best thing ever.

I miss wheeling my friend's tractor in the woods behind my house :(

It was a little (like, two people could pick it up, lawn tractor size) 5 horse from the mid 50s with baby ag tires on it and a 3 speed manual transmission. It'd climb a 45 degree incline with ease if you could keep your foot on the clutch, if you couldn't, it would happily flip over backwards onto you when you got your foot back on the clutch in terror while sliding down the hill backwards. No brakes, no seatbelt, no muffler, no clutch-belt shield, no sanity. If you were going downhill you needed to be in first gear for engine braking purposes, and had to remember to periodically kick the sprocket back onto the output shaft of the transmission so it wouldn't come off, leaving you with no engine braking and no normal braking either. Every single time that happened, an emergency "rollover/pray/jump" was executed a few seconds later.

So when are we having this shindig? I'm gonna tentatively put it down for some weekend in April or May... I am busy 4/15, 5/20, 5/26-28 but any other weekend works. (all of those are wheeling runs with my club - if anyone wants to join, we can discuss it during the blow-poo poo-up event)

Basically my weekends are entirely devoted to working on the house, jeeps, and wheeling, so if I'm not wheeling, I'll be at the house and can drop projects for this, pick a weekend and I'll clear my calendar.

So, I think I managed to find this trail you're talking about today. Is the entrance down that dead end road by the abandoned Bolles dealership? I went down one of the roads there and ended up in some kind of logging base camp. (Got this truck covered in mud for the first time ever, heh) The other option was a little too rocky for my tiny truck to handle, so I decided to continue from whence I came.

As for my other truck, I have no idea what the problem is, really. I've been working on it for years off and on. What started as a random hard miss has evolved into the truck randomly not having any spark, which leads to being stranded, which has lead to it sitting at my dad's house instead of at my house. That's actually how I ended up buying the '86 that I have. I cashed in some securities so that I could have a daily driver again, as the E30 almost never leaves home.

So far I've replaced the igniter, distributor, plugs and wires, (twice) cap and rotor (twice) ECU solenoid, MAF, installed a full MSD setup and more, all to no avail. I recently bought a used ECU off ebay, along with a replacement ignition switch wiring harness.

Hopefully that's the end of it, but this truck has been a living hell, so I doubt it will ever end. Even if I do solve the issue, I've probably burned a few valves from the random lean running. gently caress I just want to go off road again :(

Here she is in happier times, somewhere up an atv trail in Wallingford.

Close. I think I know what you're talking about, careful back there (i.e. look the hell out), the owners of the place to the left (where you were) are known to be there occasionally with guns. My club has explicit permission to be on that side, apparently one of the owners knows one of the guys in my club - but they really don't like strangers.

The owners of the place to the right (signed, gated, etc) have actually been known to take shots at people instead of just acting menacing. One of my friends took a wrong turn on the middle path and got lost back there and had to do some real fast talking.

The one to the middle, when you follow the right path, is an old public road and brings you into Southbridge. That's the one I'm talking about.

There has been a lot of illegal dumping off the sides of the middle path over the last few years. I've been slowly dragging out what I can and bringing it to the dump because I hate looking at all that crap. My bet is that the owners to the left and right are unfriendly because of the illegal dumping.

EDIT: it sounds like a wiring harness issue to me. If it's not that, maybe your CPS is marginal?

I will have a destroyed 4.0 to either destroy further (I'm betting we can find a way to make it run outside a vehicle...) or disassemble and figure out what's wrong with it.

Hopefully will have a quad to ride around in the woods and be stupid on.

Almost certainly will still have a cherokee to hit with the pickaxe and wood cutting axe until everyone's arms fall off.

Definitely will have a big pile of firewood to burn in a massive normal sized campfire.

Definitely will have significant quantities of beer to be consumed, and an air raid siren to set off (possibly.)

Definitely will have several jeeps and/or the 5-ton to drive around in the woods...

Probably a small motor or two to blow up, but not too sure on that.

I have all the tools anyone could ever want for a wrench day and two welders + related equipment if people feel like fabricating stuff.

I have a mid sized charcoal grill and am not opposed to getting another smaller one or something. My plan was to get a BBQ going and everyone can put whatever they want on it (I'll grab a whole bunch of burgers and dogs for those who aren't picky) - the Big Bunny supermarket is literally 3 blocks away, so getting food is easy till around 6pm when they close. We tried out the thermite recipe last weekend. Sadly, apparently measuring it with a cut in half beer can and mixing it by shaking it around for 30 seconds in an old mcdonalds cup isn't accurate enough. I'll be picking up a good scale today or tomorrow hopefully... and a good ball mill, and some magnesium strip.

Also I just finished clearing off my whole porch so we can grill and chill in style instead of milling around my junkyard, err, yard. The porch also doubles as an automotive workshop.

Since Commissargribb ended up with a time conflict and a few people are probably going to be camping and wandering around in the morning as well, and I have so much thermite, this is most likely going to be a two day event for anyone who feels like sticking around.

Stuff to do -
- run every paved twisty we can find (route 190 on the way back from Stafford was kinda cool in a lifted truck but probably lame in a real car, and the road from 169 by the airport to my house is the same)
- run all the rough dirt roads I know of in the various jeeps / bad rear end subarus / bad rear end toyotas
- blow poo poo up with thermite
- blow poo poo up with copper thermite
- I have a turbo for Big Turbo, Small Engine but not sure if it'll actually build boost. Someone else said they had one that will build boost, not sure who it was.
- might lift CommissarGribb's YJ Sunday?
- oh yeah, drink, bbq stuff, eat, etc.

There's also a you pull yard down in Worcester, it's called Sam's, on granite street. I go there often but they don't have much in the way of massive turbos.

Also in the Boston area is Everett's, it's in Brockton. There is a small place called Royals nearby and another one a few buildings down (same side of the road) that I forget the name of, but they are tiny and don't have much stock.

Up in Haverhill (where I grew up) there is Tony's but I don't think it is a you-pull.

Out near me (Southbridge) there is R M Constantineau's yard, but it's almost all REALLY old stuff. Aside from around 20 90s cars on one side, I don't think I saw anything newer than the mid 80s and he's got trucks all the way back into the 40s and 50s sitting around. He doesn't sell much and is suspicious of newcomers who aren't gearheads, but warms up once you get to know him. I spent something like 2 hours wandering around the yard just looking at all the trucks a few months ago. Nothing like walking around in a field of old 40s/50s Ford/International/GMC/Dodge iron, walking around a corner and suddenly seeing a pair of Jeep DJ5s sitting there. I haven't seen one of those in years, nevermind one in a junkyard.

There are some yards further west as well but I don't know them very well.

Anyways - tomorrow I intend to actually get some :krad: big rear end turbos at Holland's.

Now how will we maintain the elite nature of our rust chat?

Easy, just ban anyone who shows up because of this thread :frogout:

Glad I'm not the only one... PS: soaking them in acetone or hosing them down with low-VOC brakleen before washing them tends to take most of the stains out! I can't vouch for what critical parts and seals within your washing machine it will dissolve, nor whether it will cause your gas dryer to explode, but it works nicely.

I'm down for some BDUs :woop: assuming you happen to have some that actually fit me.

Non goons are welcome as long as they aren't weird (oh wait... goonmeet... no worries!)

Since there's likely to be alcohol fairly available I'd really like to keep this to 21+ or at least reasonably of-age appearances, seriously, remember that the police showed up for my last bonfire. If you look like you'd get carded and are underage, please don't drink in case they show up. I doubt anything will happen, but still, that's the last thing I need right now.

Time of arrival - anytime after about 10AM is fine with me. I have no idea when most people are going to show up, that's just the time you can expect me to be awake and mostly conscious. If you show up and no one else is there yet, well, I'll probably be wrenching and down for bullshitting about cars, or we can smash some poo poo in my house, I don't really care. Anything goes.

the title of the pilots thread in ask/tell is pretty accurate - weather reports are horoscopes with numbers

e: I think my favorite was a Thursday sometime last April when I took the day off work to finish rebuilding my roof. Forecast:
sunny, 60s, 10mph winds

Arrived at 7AM, weather matched forecast. Worked until around 9AM... when suddenly the winds picked up to 30-40mph, temperature dropped into the low 40s, and the sky was completely filled with dark clouds. I packed up my tools and went inside.

5 minutes later it was snowing. :psyboom:

... and 5 minutes after that, it was sunny, 60s, and 10mph winds again... so I went back to working on the roof.
