I could have just gone down to the river near me and taken a picture of a rowboat, but this was more fun!

Is it expensive really? The one on Monmouth street is 1.80 for a double espresso/macchiato which is the same as starbucks and the other unmentionables.

2.35 for a filter coffee, so not massively expensive, but still about a pound more than a sb filter and you get less, but yeah Monmouth is still awesome. An island of good coffee in a nation of instant drinkers. Their whole beans are excellent. If you're in borough market and after a coffee though, I highly recommend getting a mocha from rabot estate. It is loving delicious. Usually less busy than Monmouth too.

So far, most of these challenges have been pretty easy to accomplish, whether you live around the corner or it's somewhere near work. So the next challenge is:
:siren:Send Me A Postcard!:siren:
and by that I mean, go somewhere that isn't the town or city you live in, or near your work, and take a picture of your bike outside a Landmark Of Significance. And none of this "technically I live in Jersey City so here's a pic of the Empire State Building. Yes, technically you'll be correct, but I'll call you a bureaucrat. ;)

:siren:a Sheetz Gas Station!:siren:

Now, I realize Sheetz is not a nation wide chain, so I'll accept other competitors in that market space: reasonably up-scale gas station / convenience stores with branded food concepts. Eg. QuikTrip, Casey's General Store, Wawa, and the nicer Racetrack stations and AM/PM stores.

I have no idea what any of those are except AM/PM which from what I know is a convenience store in Japan, so in the interest of moving things along, here's our equivalent of the type of thing I think you're talking about :

BP petrol station + M&S Simply Food

Marks & Spencer has a reputation as a posh place to get your groceries, but they also do a lot of heat+serve and ready to eat meals and snacks as well as stuff you can grab on the way home from work and throw together for a quick dinner. You can also get your staples here like milk and bread and wine and beer. Their actual food stores are much better than their service station ones.

My challenge, since I've been itching to do one of these all summer but couldn't since my bike was stolen:
:siren:Your Bike In Another Country!:siren:

I appreciate this may be a bit tough if you live Omaha or Key West or something, but it shouldn't be too hard for us European lot or if you live in Detroit or something. How you prove it is up to you. A border crossing is fine, but national/regional stereotypes would be preferable.

Our national parks aren't like North American ones, they don't have signs really, or entrances, there just a designated area in which there are farms, villages, light industry etc.. They do have some lovely countryside though, and walking paths, bridle paths etc criss - crossing them. The South Downs Way cuts across 100 miles across the whole park from Winchester to Eastbourne.

And since these pictures were taken at Cocking Hill

click for big
(not far from Titty Hill)

:siren:your bike by a sign for an amusing sounding place.:siren:

Doesn't have to actually be a "welcome to Butte" sign, could just be a sign saying "Butte 69". Should be a place though, not just a street sign.

This was my route, roughly, if anyone is interested: http://goo.gl/maps/UTcwO
There are some great riding roads all throughout the South Downs. Some of the bigger roads can get busy on weekends and at rush hour, and some of the smaller ones can be quite rough with random gravel in corners and horse poop in your track. Weekday afternoon though, you have the place mostly to yourself (bar the odd tractor). It's a lovely place to spend a few hours exploring.

If after 1 week the challenge is not completed, the challenge maker should be able to (but not obligated) to complete the challenge themselves. Reason being I suspect that most people who post challenges have something in mind themselves when they post it.

Thoughts? Might also help with the game to flow.

drat, I was gonna do distillery, brewery, and winery in the same trip! I was gonna refinish my kitchen counter top tomorrow, but I'm sure I'll find one reason or another to procrastinate and riding around industrial estates off the north circular looking for bombay mix factories sounds as good a reason as any.

I like your idea, and I think you're right. I know I have things in mind when I've posted a challenge, and I want to see what others interpretation is. If it turns out to be too obscure, you might as well reveal your cunning plan and come up with something simpler.

I just found a good website to help people out if they want to go find an obscure challenge, but don't know where to look:
https://www.waymarking.com

Searchable by location, category of thing, all sorts.

For example, for the animal crossing sign in the UK, let's say you want a badger crossing sign, but don't know where to look,
http://www.waymarking.com/cat/details.aspx?f=1&guid=aec22d15-45aa-43bd-848d-3e3801fc325d&wo=True&ct=11&st=2

Also cool for this thread, because instead of riding to places you've been before or know about, you can use it to find things where you haven't been before.

I'll post a challenge here if you all decide this can count.

I assume that sign means there's a blind crossing, meaning either you or the pedestrian or both have limited visibility.
If it really is for the visually challenged,
A) the man should have a cane, and
B) while they may make good house pets, I don't think you can count them as "animals crossing", no matter how rare they are.

Well the Christians around here may disagree but blind people are actually animals, along with all other humans.

So are we saying that blinds count as obscure animals, or just a subset of common human animals? Like, would you count a pony crossing sign in dartmoor a boring horse crossing sign, or something interesting?
Either way, I'd rather wait and see a sign for some flightless bird from New Zealand.

What I'm questioning is if they're an obscure enough type of human to qualify for an obscure animal crossing sign. Especially since the pictogram is clearly just an ordinary pedestrian crossing, and only the writing underneath gives any indication that the pedestrian might be unsighted. You might as well take a picture of a deer crossing sign that has an extra point on its antler and call it different.

West London is sort of an Art Deco museum, not too far away on the A4 you've got Gillette Corner which has a nice little cluster of surviving Art Deco factories, and further up the A40 there's a bunch more which are slowly being demolished because they're not as well-known. Most of the Underground stations out that way, particularly on the Piccadilly and District lines, are lovely Art Deco pieces too. There's some crackers in the West End too (those that escaped the Luftwaffe and the 60s anyway).

I know this challenge is gone now but I sort of wanted to go the other way with it; I live in an area that has changed completely beyond recognition in the last 20 years, so a picture like this:

was taken somewhere that now looks like this:

(Slight liberty taken with location and the Street View wide-angle lenses kinda sell the Canary Wharf towers, among the tallest in Europe, pretty short, but you get the idea).

Maybe I'll go for it anyway as a general project, seems like as good a thing to photograph as any.

I was going to do Gillette corner, but I couldn't find any good old photos of it from street level (plus, it wasn't on my way!). Those are some of the more well known, but hell even Vanguard Storage on the a40 is maximum Deco. The Barratt Homes development in Brentford just beside the M4 is a good one, and like you said there's tons more. My absolute favourite though is the Barkers building in Kensington:
