Isit the Quick

The morning crows parted for Isit, eyes looking away, or appraising her weapons as she passed. A few had friends or family she had taken in. That didn't matter as long as no one tried to stick a dagger in her back. Wasn't lokely today. The folks who did that type of work usually had the grace to wait until she was drunk to try it. Chewing on wad of qaht leaves, Isit turned and spat before stepping into the mayor's manor. She respected the man, and wouldn't disrespect his office. After all, he was what was holding this town together. The mad spent his money on walls for the town, and not ornamentation for his home. Isit respected that. She respected his money as well.

Entering the receiving room, the woman leans against the wall to wait, at least an arm's length from the others. Just in case. The northman, the dandy, a satyr and a dwarf had already arrived and started chatting. Well the dwarf hadn't. Nodding her greeting at the dwarf, the bounty hunter turns to the others, studying them intently for a moment before leaning back again, eyes half closed.

Isit nods at the girl, letting a brief smile play across her face. Was she truly that intimidating? Girl must have been remembering the dead mark she had towed back the other day. "Lette, I am Isit." The girl looked a little young for this task, but the mayor was no fool. Likely she was here for the meeting as well.

Tilting her head, she regards the northman. "Me? I hunt men, but only those who have broken the peace." It was odd that he referred to her as a 'tree folk', when she was city born and bred. Still, no reason to spill the beans. A little mystery kept her safe.

The elf nods, and starts the process of stringing her bow. She tried to avoid caravan jobs, but money was money, and she had a reputation to uphold. Besides, this meant fewer people she'd need to hunt down later in all likelihood. Donnel will have a field day after hearing about this. Quick check of her weapons, and she nods to the guard captain. "Let's get this done." Sparing a glance at the young woman, she looks her over, hoping to see that her weapons were sharp. "You got a bow lass? Range is best if you're new at this."

Grunting, Isit armors up and checks her weapons. The others get a serious look, and she stares each in the eyes for a second. That's what Donnel had done when he was her Sargent. Seemed to work. "Listen, me and Lette can provide ranged support once we get behind cover. We'll take any archers first. If they aren't there, we get big guys. Goes without saying magic users die fast as they can. People who can use spears, use them, they got reach. Otherwise swords." Frowning, she glances at the dwarf. "You, is that staff for decor, or can you do some loving magic? Never had a wizard in my unit, so I don't know tactics for that sort of thing." Tapping the side of her head, she smiles, briefly. "Just basic military tricks, nothing fancy."

The others were trying to negotiate and gods bless them for that, but the northman called ambush, and that was that. More talking and the centaurs would have the drop on them. She decided to take the ambiguity out of the situation. Pulling the arrow back, the elf ducks down, trying to get some cover. The archer would do for a first kill. Pulling back the bow Isit whispers to Lette. "Fire."

Looking from the archers to the horses, Isit makes the decision that the cart is not the safest place to be. Hopefully the panicked horses would trample someone unfriendly. If they were lucky. If not, dead horses were not the worst cover to hide behind. "Look out, lass, the horses are gonna bolt."

The girl seemed to have a touch of the heroics in her, or perhaps she was just a decent person. Either way, she quite possibly saved the horses, and perhaps even the driver. However, they still had the damned centaurs to deal with. Well, they talked like they wanted to take them alive, but she had no desire to be stomped to death by some tarted-up donkey queen's blood ritual. Or sold into slavery, which seemed quite more likely. Pushing these lurid thoughts away, Isit whispers a hint of a spell to her arrow before firing it. She had better use this one before the enemy came to close to friendlies.

Isit winces when the guard goes down. The wound he had was pretty similar to the one that felled her during the war. He'd probably survive if they ended it soon. Seeing the archers aim, the elf decided they were either trying to finish off the poor man for some inexplicable reason, or trying to hit their legs. Hopefully they were bad shots. They needed to end this, and quickly. Taking a deep breath, Isit bellows her best drill Sargent impersonation. "Guards! Defend your brother! Send that creature to hell!" Drawing back her bow, she aims at the wounded archer once more. If they got shots off, this would not end well for them.

She just blinks once as the centaur charges towards her. Forced into melee with a bigger, armored opponent was never good, and she never like fighting fair. Isit sighed as she drew her short sword. At least the northman seemed to be having fun.

The centaurs fought like the northman fought, lots of running about. Still, it was to be expected from horses. Readying herself for the blow, Isit braces herself. Then the blasted creature breezes past her and attacks Lette. Bastard made her drop the bow now this. The elf growls, and grips her sword. Bastard wouldn't charge another if she had anything to say about it.

The pleased feeling Iist gets upon injuring the centaur is quickly surpassed by the extreme pain of being kicked by a gods-drat centaur. She had considered it briefly when charging, but the reality was much more painful. Steeling herself for another kick, or perhaps the spear, Isit stands her ground as best she can. Nodding at Lette's query, she sways and spits at the creature. "Well gently caress." Gripping her sword, she waits for the blow.

The elf blinks at the centaur, and unconsciously nods. If she was on the other end, likely she'd be trying to get a rise out of him. But she wasn't she was wounded, hearing horrible scrams, and half unconscious from that loving smug centaur kicking her face. This was why she liked to be the one doing ambushing. Arrow in an enemy's back was worth all the honor some knights and northers raved about. "Alright. Lette, guardsman, form up and move to the drat dwarf. Don't separate. We guard each others backs."

Gamely holding on, Isit refrains from attacking. Might be cowardly, but she was an old hand, and knew another good hit would leave her at the centaur's mercies. As much as she wanted to save the guards, the elf valued her health over theirs. But the girl was still fighting. Swearing under her breath, she stretches the whisper of power in her blood to Lette's weapon. "I got your back Lette, they come for us and we go down fighting."


Will try to imbue Lette's weapon with Annihilating Weapon 12 Offensive. Still will use defensively for me if parried.

The elf stares at the stalemate that seemed to be going on. The centaurs were hurt, but they were worse off. If she ended up hunting them down, she'd have to put a few nice traps that broke spindly horse legs. Next time she would ambush them. If they got out of this without capture or kill. Eyes flickers down at the guard, she lets out a grating whisper. "Get behind me if you can."


Moving up one hex to stand over the guard, holding action. Will attack if centaur goes for him otherwise full defense. Will use Annihilating weapon 12 if I get a parry.

Isit steps forward, putting herself between the centaurs and the collapsed guard. "ENOUGH. I am the hand of the law, and will see too it that the bounties placed on your heads will be enough to tempt the gods! Leave or be hunted for all your days!" A bit melodramatic. And being beat to poo poo didn't help, but sometimes people got funny about having a bounty out on them. She smiled slightly at the thought of their heads on pikes. That's do nicely.

Isit lets out a harsh laugh as the centaurs retreat. They hadn't taken the guards, but had half of what they came for, be it their blood, or the caravan. But she had their's, oh yes, she did. Wiping the blood from her sword, the elf carefully folds the bloodied scrap of cloth into her pocket. Nodding to the girl and guard, she kneels down. "Well done." Gritting her teeth, she tears a strip of her short and tries to stauch the wounds of the guard currently at her feet. "loving centaurs on flat ground. loving hell. Wach the carts. Might be trapped." Lowering her voice, she groans. "Ignore the law, they'll see. Fuckers."

IQ 12, don't have First aid cause I'm a pro.

Isit nods at Lette. "Usually goes much worse. Alec shoul be dead by all rights. Berserkers never have good ends. With a grunt, she stands up and hobbles towards the carts, taking care not to startle the child. Lo'el seemed to have it in hand. Wasn't much of a fighter, but he sounded like he could charm cats from trees. Or a Kat from a cart as it were. Tilting her head, she peers around the carts, trying to find any missed tells. Arrowheads, armor, hoof prints could all tell a tale of who they were. Along with blood.

Spitting in the dirt, Isit ambles up to the guard captian. "They used to fighting as a team, disciplined. Wanted live captures. Took the civvies without a struggle, either by magic, intimidation, or persuasion. Though I can't imagine they would leave a child if they thought it was safe." Isit frowned, but didn't speculate what they'd want live captures for. Likely slaves, sacrifices, or hostages. "Walked into an ambush here. But we wounded them so you may be able to track."

The elf nods at the other's statements. "Yeah a trap set by ex-military is a bit- er, bear to deal with Sir. They seem very organized and mentioned a Queen. i don't suppose you know any things claiming that title around these parts? My only concern for a rescue mission would be the hostages. If I were them, I'd make use of them as a human shield. They might start slitting neck as soon as we attack." Pausing, she looks around. "might be better to lue a few of them into a trap of our own and take some captives. If possible. Or get leverage on them of some kind."

"Well deception or not, investigation is the only way to figure this mess out. Seems like we are all looking to do our part for this city. is my home after all. At least the storm gives us time to rest. if i was a superstitious woman, i'd call it an omen, but let's hope it is for good rather than ill." She raises an eyebrow at Alec before continuing. "I'm sure what we shall find will be more mundane than a northern spirit army, but have preparations to make in any case. Pardon my question my Lord, but would you know someone who could recommend a for hire witch? I wish to take precautions before going into the wilds." Frowning at the others, the elf rubs her bandages. "I'd say we all need sleep and a good rest. no celebrations, just preparation."

The elf nods and smiles. "Of course my lord, only so many hours in the day. Do take care. You may well be the only person holding this place together, and the world is running short on refuges." Either he was one of the truly honest politicians who didn't have a with in their employ, or a fine liar. Of course any politician worth their salt was the latter. Sniffing herself, she winces. "I think I shall seek out a spell caster, then retire back to the inn, since the city is footing the bill. Lo'el, Lette, if either of you wish to be advised in matters of weapons or armor, perhaps we can shop for that after your...er...paper shopping." It seemed a waste to her, but who knew what satyrs did for sport. Apparently writing books was a great thing with this one. And Lette seemed the lettered type as well. She'd have to try and convince them to make her seem quite dangerous. It would be good press.

The elf states at the pair blankly as she follow them around in thierry food shopping. They seemed so unrepentantly chipper. Buying some mutton Isit leans against a wall and listens to their chatter. "How are you two so unrepentantly cheerful? I've never seen the like. Well, Mercy in the army was, but she was a drunk. Anyways, why do you need journals? Gonna write a book?"

"Huh, and you grew up on a farm? Rather unique for you to be so lettered. Most farm people I brought in used an X for thier mark. Your mother must have been quite a woman to tend farm and be a scholar of sorts." With a shrug, she purchases an apple dumpling. The others must be making her nostalgic for home, if she was turning to pastries. "Guess it isn't as exciting for me. To open out here, good place to be knifed or pick pocketed. Especially with more desperate people pouring in."

The elf shrugs. "Well you probably don't have to worry about a knifing unless you did something to merit it, but that happens some time. Noah is pretty safe, but paranoia never hurts. And there are always places dangerous enough in the city that you'll be a target." Pausing, she winks. "Unless you have the gear to look scary." The talk about names merits another raised brow. "Guess I'm lucky I don't go by my name. I guess that explains the lack of effective curses."

Alec's contribution prompts a look of caution. "You people celebrate deaths? If you kill a man and celebrate, his shade will haunt you. It's a fact." Coughing she tries to change the subject. I'd she talked of ghosts, they might pay attention. "Anyways you need a bow, and I need caltrops. You know how to handle one? I assume all northerners do, then again I thought wizards were useful in battles until I met poor Dolan."

Isit shakes her head gravely. "Some dead envy the living, and are drawn to sounds of life like moths to the flame. It is not good to speak of this, but it is truth. Take care with your customs Alec." Waving her hand she dismisses the thought. "You need a bow, and the others require gear....and books. I think Lo'el has the right idea with his spear, but needs armor. Perhaps throwing weapons as well."

The elf watches the other buy a bow that was decent enough. Nothing like the heart breaker she had, but it would do. She wondered if Alec would try stabbing someone with it if push came to shove. Probably. Stepping over to a stall hung with arrows, Isit nods at a rather portly older woman. "Madam, I am looking to purchase any specialty arrows that you may have, bodkin might do. Perhaps magical ones as well if they are in stock."

Diplomacy 10
Magic spell was dumb idea (until I am rich), magic arrows better. Also looking for caltrops.

Spreading her hands, Isit grins. "We cannot have everything. Worth asking though. Bodkin will do just fine." Selecting ten likely points, she doles out the woman's gold. "Fare you well, madam." Nodding her farewell, she looks around the marketplace. The others seemed to have wandered off on some errand or another. Hopefully they wouldn't get lost, or robbed blind. And she had other things to prepare for if they were going into the woods. Getting one more decent meal, for one. Maybe a light ale to help her sleep before bed.

Heading back to the "castle", she whistles upon seeing Martin. "Hey, Martin, how's your wounds. Got some bodkin points on account of the drat centaurs being armored. Think the others hared off after some weird north-man thing. Was talking about stories and such. Told him to look in the tavern for that, hah. They picked up decent gear though." Raising her eyebrow, the elf's arms cross. "Where you been?"

Spending 24 gold on 10 bodkin arrows, 479 gold left

"Armor might be good. I hope they have some groin armor, cause those centaurs seems to want to go after the boys. Heh, glad I'm a lady sometimes." She nods at the news about arrows. "Makes sense. Crossbows are easier to use for the untrained, like new guards. Also better in cramped quarters, and ambushes since your arm isn't holding the string." Shrugging, she pats her neck. "Mostly back to business. Least I didn't nearly get disemboweled this time. Damned if I don't hate knife fights."

The query about the other merits a chuckle. "They'll be fine. Alec is a little...well, conspicuous, but no one will mess with a big barbarian, even if he's asking nonsense questions. Lo'el, too, though his manner should keep him out of trouble. Lette's the best of the bunch in cities, but she seems more worldly. They'll all be fine unless they go into the wrong art of town. And I gave them a warning about knifings for good measure." Shrugging, she looks to the sky for signs of rain. "Listen, If I'm to go out into the wilds with you, I'd like to learn more. Like where the hell did you learn that fighting style, haven't seen the like in ages."

Isit nods slowly, a noble, but not particularly lazy, as most of them were. "Well at least you did something useful with your skills." She stares at him for a moment before deciding not to press the issue further. His lands were likely lost like many others in the war. Probably was landless now, worse than death for many of his kind. "Me? I was in a skirmish unit in the war. My Sargent, Donnel, must have seen something in me, cause he trained me to use the bow. If I had stayed sword, I would have died quick-like. Got injured, was hired on to see to the law, and now I'm standing here."

Errands having been run, Isit heads back to the inn to meet up with the others, intent on getting a halfway decent meal and sleep before she heads out against unknown enemies. Checking her knives, she enters the inn, and finds Alec sitting at a table, clearly waiting for them. Out in the open where everyone could scope them out. But he likely didn't have anyone after him. "So Alec, did you find an old man with stories?" Looking around the room for a moment, she takes a seat facing the door. "Why do you want that sort of thing? Most problems can be cured with an arrow, and if they can't, you're dead anyways." Sighing, she orders a dark ale. "You ready for going out into the woods tomorrow? I'm kind of afraid you'll pull that berserker thing again, and start screaming about your god. Sometimes you gotta fight and run. Or just run. We may have to do lots of running, you okay with that?"
