I've managed to get a gnome cleric to a respectable tinkering level and, if you go cleric, the clockwork watchman armor they get is an absolute blast to use once the recipes open up in Velious. Full set has rechargeable invis, see invis, +30 dex/str buffs, SoW and 40% spell haste

Looking at the Live server progression FAQ, it sounds like Agnarr's ruleset is close to what I wish project1999 would expand to. Timelocked up to Planes of Power with Legacy of Ykesha and Lost Dungeons of Norrath included.
