I haven't thought about AMVs in years but here are a few from back in the day! Various - Let it Run https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F71HKsuIHpY This is probably my favorite AMV, it's by the guy who made the famous two-mix rhythm animation video. IIRC he made his videos with two VHS decks. Cowboy Bebop/Outlaw Star - Maxwell Murder https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7Q1tllxOu-A This guy made a ton of highly regarded videos and made this in 10 minutes while drunk one night or something. Evangelion - Engel https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iZKq1HqZuvw The best Evangelion video. Ghost in the Shell - Virus https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HXUcwdXEtm4 This video was really popular. To achieve the video quality of the following FLCL videos, the creators each imported the DVDs from Japan at something like $60 a piece! Each disc contained one episode. This was long before Synch-Point would release the show on DVD in the US, and the digisubs of the time were of terrible quality, and of course hardsubbed, so if you wanted to make a video of a show that was not released in the US, this is what you had to go through. They probably came out ahead though, because from what I understand those first edition DVDs and their associated postcards/posters/stickers etc are worth a goddamn fortune now. FLCL - Vib Ribbon https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0OTWqHxjo3s I think this was the first AMV ever made for this show. The quality was mindblowing for the time, and we watched this repeatedly. I believe this inspired a friend of mine to make... FLCL - Science Fiction Double Feature https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8snwJgo7HK0 Which does an absolutely fantastic job of matching lyrics to onscreen action, probably my favorite video for this show even if I'm biased because the guy is one of my best friends. This inspired me to try my hand at a decent AMV and the result is Mahoromatic - Danger Woman https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WTMHHkenJnI I submitted this to a bunch of contests at conventions I had no intention of going to and it won a bunch, some even first place. I don't like it and I think the opening titles ripped from the movie Bottle Rocket are tacky as hell. But here it is! EDIT: Some more nostalgia. Back in the late 90's/early 2000s AMVs were almost like advertising for some shows. Getting into a show was either a huge investment in time/bandwidth or money so we would troll Kazaa or whatever for AMVs of shows we'd heard about and sit around in groups watching them and figuring out what to watch next. It was a good quick way to determine animation quality without committing to something. The videos that featured like twenty different shows cut together became nerd dickwaving contests to see who could name the most shows/movies/etc featured. This video became a dickwaving contest involving not only anime titles but makes/models of cars: Various - Cars https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q4hSLRSggsQ EDIT2: AMVs also provided lots of "man what the hell is wrong with Japan" fodder: Golden Boy - Faith https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-t1sineUgSw Ping Pong Club - Young Boys https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HZEAPlDKGNU EDIT534765: Getting all sorts of nostalgic up in here. Here's some more crap from the good ol days Battle Athletes - Believe https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GgYMPIb0Ooo Akira - Enough Original: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Cbxt9Tikryg HQ Remake: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=auAlWRDANzc Tenchi - Wynonna's Big Brown Beaver https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-kbJDuwwHF8 Evangelion - Mentos and WAZZUP https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BNrqlRsOFT0 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q0-fPIfAFK0 Various - Jerry Springer https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wbcZ3r0cu5o d0s fucked around with this message at 16:08 on Aug 9, 2012 |

It's addicting, and the remix of Pop Culture I really prefer over the original. drat that's a good AMV, I want to post it in the GBS youtube thread because it's positively hypnotizing and really perfectly edited, but I'm thinking they'll whine about that super-simplified baby crotch, that seems to be very prevalent in anime, from that stupid Gurren Lagann Parallel Work that's right near the beginning.

I was here to list a large pile when I saw most of it was taken. So here are a few AMVs I love that I noticed people have not mentioned: One Day More (from Les Miserables, specifically the TAC), as Performed by the Code Geass Cast (Spoilers for basically the entire plot) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3f0oJCMACe0 I like this one because it actually takes advantage of both the theatrics and the sheer scope of Code Geass. Most AMVs I see of them take advantage of one or the other. And Now, a Word From Our Sponsors - Burger Dance - Code Geass (and others) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pzMctd8bb20 No comment on this one. Anything I say will detract from it. Spanish Wolf - Spice and Wolf - Spanish Lady https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GRm1FDIfYTQ This, plus hearty recommendations from three friends, was what caused me to finally pick up Spice and Wolf. Here's two AMVs that involve futuristic racing and electronic music. Redline / Duality (Belzebass remix) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vblnsgMZh2c I love this one because it's just so much condensed into one video. The animation is loving gorgeous, too. The Running Man / Kavinsky - Wayfarer https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=myhBYeCHDaw The 80's-esque synths are perfect match for the 80's dystopian sci-fi look. I personally like the weird doubling effect, but I could see why someone else wouldn't. VirtualStranger fucked around with this message at 03:04 on Aug 21, 2012 |

Are remixes and mashups kosher? If not, sorry but here goes! Renai Circulation (Bakemonogatari OP#748?) vs New Radicals. Nakinyko makes some really great stuff. Black and Yellow Sketch stands out. Two songs about colour! Hidamari's Sketch Switch vs Something else, I closed the window already. Manabi and Rhianna works surprisingly well. Could use more Manabi hand claps though. xxNONOWAxx has a stupid name but some sweet Nichijou remixes and more. Un-tan.

Grappler Baki, "Sakuranbo Kiss," by KOTOKO https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IUcUQygmH50 Terrible exploitation of tsuki (punch) and suki (love) sounding similar, together with the huge disconnect between the cute song and Baki's hypermasculine art make this great. Snatch, "Gun's and Roses," by Paradise Lunch https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W5iFD6LmKi4 The opening to Baccano set to the heist flick Snatch. You have to be at least passingly familiar with both to see why this is hilarious. The Idolm@ster, "Eien no Sonzaisha," by pigstar http://nicoviewer.net/sm16766181 A well done MAD that tells the story pretty well even if you don't understand the song and don't follow the series, I think. Bakemonogatari, "Tomodachi no Uta," by Kurahashi Yoeko http://nicoviewer.net/sm12774054 Amazing MAD just because the song fits the characters so well. The Girl Who Leapt Through Time, "Kawaranai Mono" by Oku Hanako https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sx1SV299I2M Combine movie with movie's soundtrack, surprise! It fits really well. And for an absolutely amazing mashup: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SrYD96JZKTE It's so good I actually don't remember what Lucky Star's opening or the Beastie Boys' Ch-Check It Out sound like alone anymore.
