AFewBricksShy posted:Goddamn, MTV. You used to be cool. What happened? I had forgotten all about those bumpers. My family avoided cable from about 1987 until June of 1994. We were not allowed to watch MTV, especially Beavis and Butthead. My parents recorded an episode (Late Shift), watched it, then sat down and watched it with us telling us about how bad of a show it was and how they would have lost their jobs. That didn't stop me from waiting until they went to bed and sneaking into the TV room to watch MTV all night long, every night for the next 3 or 4 years. 11:00, Beavis and Butthead, Alternative Nation, Liquid Television, then to bed at about 1:30. I think watching Kennedy is where I gained my attraction for sarcastic women who wear glasses, I never could figure out the hatred for her.

I saw a commercial on TV the other day for a bank or insurance company, I wish I could remember, but it was super 90s. It was a montage of people doing X-TREME SPORTZ while wearing day-glo winter clothes.

augias posted:Softcore porn on Showtime. Oh God, me too... I do remember one particular time, for whatever reason, Showgirls was on, and it was clear enough to see actual titties for a several minute stretch...being 15, I probably was able to grind out 10 or 15 times in those few minutes. The craziest thing happened one weekend, though. We had a crazy lightning storm, and I poo poo you not it caused us to receive free Showtime and Cinemax for about a day. It occurred late at night, and I noticed flipping through that it wasn't all scrambled. Being smart, I immediately put a tape in the VCR. The very next movie was some softcore porn (I think it was called Showgirl Murders? Something like that.) I recorded that, and after that, was some softcore about a guy who wrote music for porn movies. That was the better of the two, much more attractive women. Anyway, I'll just leave this here. (Despite previous talk, this is as far from softcore porn as you can get.) Edit: Oh, and who can forget Nick's attempt to cash in on the teen crowd? (Roundhouse rocked, though I wasn't a teen when I watched it...well, maybe I watched a bit when I was 13 or 14?) DrBouvenstein has a new favorite as of 22:58 on Mar 23, 2012 |

I don't understand why MTV wont release a DVD or something of their worst videos ever special with Jon Stewart (among other people). That special is loving hilarious. It encapsulates old MTV for me, just a bunch of random lovely comedians riffing on bad music videos for an hour.

Gamesmaster anyone? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WlfaeZZ0tjU&feature=related If you are unfamilar with the show just watch a bit of the clip or skip to the 1:30 mark for the awesome head of Patrick Moore and why it was the staple of any game lover in the 90's. Also the added bonus for UK goons, boy band East 17 is at the beginning of the same clip All the opening credits The Hell/Rollercoaster one at again 1:30 is really cool and memorable though I don't remember the McDonalds advertising.

I remember there were these juice drinks that were packaged in thin plastic and shaped like soda bottles. There were a few different brands, but if I recall correctly the cheap brands were just plainly packaged, whereas the "higher end" ones had goofy faces engraved in the bottle. The best variation came with these weird little tablets that you dropped into the bottle and the liquid would change color and I think flavor. I used to envy the kids who'd sit at my table with the color changing ones Anyone remember SMUD? It was a Nickelodeon product in the vein of Gak, but it was this blue clay stuff that was most notable for it's weird rear end smell. I also remember that they used to sell slime in gumball machines, which I haven't seen in a long time. Mostly though, my childhood was dominated by the shrieks of Gilbert Godfried being emitted by a smoke detector puppet.

Pocket Rockers! I got one of these like a year or two after the fad had already died down, at a Toy Liquidators store. The only two tapes I had were La Bamba (plus whatever the B-Side was) and a tape with Beach Boys songs. Didn't really use it much, but for whatever reason I thought the idea was cool, and the art design was 90's As gently caress. Looking back, the assortment of music was a little odd. There were some classic pop/rock standards, but then they had stuff like Phil Collins. What kid didn't want to play Sussudio on an endless loop for all their friends?
