Great thread! Do you feel you are still improving your game or have you reached a ceiling where it would take a more serious approach to get noticeably better? You explained why you don't want to go full-time hustling, but you didn't explain why you don't want to become an "ordinary" pro player (if such a thing even exists, maybe I got it all wrong). So, why not? How does it even work, I guess you join a team, get sponsors, play tournaments..? Can you make a living playing pool if you don't hustle? And why not make a video for us? You could play a buddy and comment on your shots. That would be neat.  Just point the camera at the table, no need to show faces.

So putting spin on a ball is called 'english'. Is that local slang or is it a proper term used throughout the US? I wonder how the English call it.

I am going to Vegas next week so I am going to see if there is any tables around there I might try to shoot a few times at a snooker table if one is available. I was never a good pool player but I did play some. Then one night we went to a pool hall that had a snooker table. The test was to put the cue ball on one end on the table and a red ball on the middle and simply shoot the long diagonal. I think the success rate was 10%.

When you come to a pool hall and shoot around waiting for action, do you try to create impression of not being a good player? How do you do that? Let your hand go so that the shots are imprecise?

Seeing half of my life savings disappear out my account made me almost poo poo my pants and I got really sick once I finally hit the transfer button but the amount of work that I had to do immediately after that took my mind off it. I never told my parents about any of this because no matter what I do they never support it anyway and my girlfriend convinced me to go to dinner at their house for Christmas and told my dad all this. His first words out of his mouth was where would I get this kind of money and even though he knows I have money from gambling I don't think he knew that I had saved so much. After we discussed everything he basically spent the last 30 minutes of our dinner telling me how the buisness will fail and it wasn't a wise decision. So I told him to gently caress off handed him his gift (a really stupid expensive pen he wanted) and haven't spoken to him since. They really don't like me because I refuse to follow their religion and no matter how hard I try to show them that I am successful with out their religion it doesn't matter. It's really funny too because when I told my Uncle Frank about all this his wife started crying and he gave me this huge bear hug at how proud he was of me so in the end it all evens out. I also decided to propose to my girlfriend on New Years Eve. I had so many comps from the casino that I worked it out with the hotel across the street to use them for a huge penthouse suite. I had a nice decent size party with all of my close friends and at midnight I proposed to her and she said yes. We are getting married in 2014 because of all the stuff we both have planned for this year we just weren't able to fit it in our schedule. Anyways enough about my lovely parents and love life lets get back to the gambling. Good luck, man! You have goon support.

If you get a handicap at a lower skill level than you actually have, you will either gain an advantage over an equally skilled (and honestly rated) opponent, get an additional advantage over a higher skilled (and honestly rated) opponent or get a lower disadvantage against a lesser skilled (do I need to say it again) opponent. All right, say you lost 4 games on purpose to get a low skill handicap, and it pays back by giving you advantage over other teams so you won the next 4 games... Was it worth it? Lost 4, won 4 - might have as well played for real from the start.

Thanks everyone for the explanations. I looked up the origin of the word and it used to mean hitting someone on the head with a sack of sand. I guess the meaning carried over is to hit your enemy with a less dangerous weapon.
