c355n4 posted:Can someone explain what a BBJ is? Trying to figure it out from the story; but, it isn't making sense. You essentially lost the hand but still won? Bad Beat Jackpot. Typically, $1 is taken from pots greater than a certain amount, with at least 5 or so players dealt cards, and the jackpot is hit whenever anyone loses with a big hand to another big hand. The specific requirements vary casino to casino. Foxwoods, for example, requires quad 8's to lose, and both players must use both hole cards and it must be a pocket pair for quads. So, pocket 8's making quads losing to pocket Q's making quads would qualify. Loser of the hand wins half of the jackpot, winner a quarter, the rest split among the rest of the table, usually. Sometimes the casino keeps some of it for the next jackpot just so it doesn't go down to 0.

Doctor Malaver posted:So how does "pretty shook up by the passing of their mother" turn into "hit the casino for the night and party it up"? Honestly, that seems like a good way to celebrate someone's life, by living.

Won't argue with the running it twice part; honestly, it really doesn't matter. On the other hand, I enjoy poker because I enjoy playing games and having an edge and all that. Basically, I'm not actually gambling, I'm playing a card game just as I play bridge and hearts and whatever, it just so happens it's poker and it's for money. Fun game either way to be honest.

jase1 posted:Not to get all technical on you but you are gambling, you are putting money into a pot without knowing the outcome so it's gambling. There may be some skill involved to reduce your variance or whatever but at the end of the day it's still gambling. Oh no, I'm aware I'm gambling. What I'm saying is that my mindset is that I enjoy the game aspect more than the gambling aspect as such. Basically, just trying to disagree with your assertion that focusing on the odds makes the game unfun; it's simply a difference of how one enjoys the game. As I said, though, your way is definitely fun too.
