It seemed from the Self Publishing thread that goons have not made a lot of money from non-erotica stuff. I love writing fiction and that seems really neat but I am highly skeptical. Also writing good fiction takes a lot of time. The don't ask for your bank's address on the direct deposit form, do they? I have never been asked that for any job when filling one out. Its just bank name, routing and account numbers. There is no way for them to know unless you use a regional bank with the specific city or state in the name.

Asking the questions, too, wouldn't have hurt either.

It's all about how much you got wrong or right and how far off you are. The thing is that there's a maximum amount wrong for each category, so if you get like 85% of them right but you missed a bunch from one category you might fail. Or you could only get 75% right and pass because your mistakes were more evenly distributed. The quals are nuts. Out of the 50+ that took it with me only 1 passed. The poo poo is so arbitrary in some things.

I finished a file this morning that was a pain in the rear end. The only saving grace was the subject matter. Its the only reason I didn't totally felt ripped off since the pay wasn't that great with the speaker I had to deal with. Constantly mumbling and laughing while talking. You're lucky you've done more in one day than I'll probably do in my whole life, sir.

Doesn't state how much experience, but I'm assuming a couple of weeks with one other transcription house isn't going to cut the mustard. I may wait a while before sending a resume to them. I've only received one assignment from DT so far so I'm pretty bummed about that, but I didn't expect a deluge of work. I'm looking at their Transcriber Application page, where do you see they require experience? I don't see it anywhere. They only pay .40/minute, I don't see how they can require previous experience since anyone with experience can get more than that everywhere else. I'm going to put in an application just for the fact they used the Big Kahuna Burger dialogue from Pulp Fiction in their Sample Template.

Only reason I am asking is because it is closing in on a month since I emailed my test file in and haven't heard anything back yet. I know people were saying DT was very busy towards mid-February when I submitted, not sure if that is still the case or what. Email them asking about it. I heard back from my test the next day but didn't get my paperwork for signing up. After waiting about a week and a half I emailed them asking about it and they apologized for the wait but were swamped the past couple of weeks. They sent the paperwork right then and I started. Never hurts to ask and it might show them you are excited to start the job.

Quick question for Kaz or anyone who uses Inscribe. Midway through a file the sound guy had a problem with sound and now half my TCs are [00:00:32:04] off. Is there an easy way to fix the screwed up ones without doing it individually? The program won't let me select all the affected TCs. It seems to be either all or just one at a time unless I'm missing something. Edit: Nevermind, I figured it out. I'm dumb. jabro fucked around with this message at 23:09 on Mar 19, 2013 |

Yeah, for some reason I kept trying to select only the affected time codes but not anything else. Then it dawned on, "Hey dummy, the time code is a macro. Maybe highlight everything including the text and then tell it to adjust."

But yes, in the first few weeks working with them I really didn't get a lot and just chalked it up to them evaluating my skills. It was me who turned it down. That was one of the files I turned down from being overextended. I knew that it was too good to be true. The files I reviewed were perfectly spoken with no background noise so I wondered why the pay was higher than usual. I figured it was because I would be googling medical terms for proper spelling 90% of the time. Not to mention I would be forced to look at boobies the whole time transcribing.

Budget Bears posted:If I want to turn down a particular DT job because I won't be able to complete it by the deadline, do I need to email them saying so? I always email them a confirmation that I have received the files that they send me to transcribe, which usually says something like, "I have received file #1234 and I will be able to complete it by the deadline." To turn something down, should I email them just saying "I am unable to complete file #1234 by the deadline"? Yes, and tell them why. They'll usually email you back with a new deadline ask if you can get it done by then.

I started an ongoing porn transcription gig a couple of weeks ago and it's pretty hilarious but Jesus it's somehow so incredibly dull. Right now I'm working on a BDSM orgy starring five guys, and all of them feel the need to say variations on "oh gently caress yes" constantly and at the same time as one another. All of these are 90 minutes long and thankfully they go relatively quick because of the minimal dialogue, but I hadn't anticipated how mind-numbing it would be to sit here and make note of every time someone says "oh yes." What's the company? I have to check this out.
