In addition to Rapt0rCharles's post, be mindful of the saturation in your colours. The blue carpet especially is eye-burning. In the sprite you're using a heap of colours, and "straight" colour ramps (i.e. shifting in value rather than saturation and hue). Read this for a better description (hue shifting at the bottom).

Some mostly-mirrored portraits using Dawnbringer's 16 colour palette:

Thanks for that, I always feel like hair is were I'm weakest... well that and shading, so when I combine the two my brain melts.

In the meantime I cleaned up a lot of my lines and curves and now he looks rounder. I might redo the top of his hair too..

Did you try Aseprite? It's in the OP, so you might have already, but once you actually learn it, and its shortcuts, it's actually quite good. I use it, and I've really enjoyed it, just as an animator. There are a few snags- like I don't quite like how you have to tab out to do much with its layers- but other wise, it's a very solid little program. It doesn't like tablets that much, but neither does GraphigsGale.

Hrmm.. space to pan around, a grid, right click ERASES?! It makes so much sense!

You are making big improvements! Good usage of shifting your shading colours slightly into blue, too.

On the walking sprites, forgive me if I'm misinterpreting but it appears as if there is a highlight on both knees mid-stride. If one leg is angling away from the viewer that should not happen. Or it's the fact that the highlight flashes on for one frame on both knees then disappears in the others.

Actually yeah you're right. I was thinking of the back leg being bent kinda forward, but its not, the foot is supposed to be down on the floor.

Should look like this,

Shoehead your pieces seem to be solidly progressing but I feel like the oversize hands don't lend towards a balanced silhouette. That's a real improvement in my opinion. How do you feel about the change?

Here are a few more tweaks I would make:

I tried adjusting the hand ever so slightly to make it appear a little more canted towards the viewer, as well as introducing some shadow into the crook of the arm so that the pose appears more natural. I made a slight change to the foot to make it less puffy.

I know the black outline is a whole other element that you might not feel comfortable with messing with at this stage, but I wanted to illustrate how varying the darkness of that outline can give all sorts of methods for adding shadow and character to form without actually altering the outline.
Sorry I was amazingly ill yesterday.

I'm not 100% ready to ditch the black border yet. It's a crutch!

Was the original crabman supposed to be based on a horseshoe crab?

It sure was, before I removed his horseshoe crab tail. His claw and face are regular crabby stuff. Have you ever seen crabs mouths move? It looks so cool!

And yeag I'm thinkin of doing something like the pattern on his fore head on his torso or some fins or cilia. Not sure yet.

So Supajackie on Tumblr had a fun little idea. I'll just quote him 'cos it's easier.

quote:

I thought that the idea of giving a bunch of artists a bland, basic, “bad” piece and having them each take it and fix it up and give it their own spin and style is just SO COOL!

So gently caress it, why not get everyone here to give it a go? We've got a load of different artists in the thread who are all at different levels, so it'll be good practice for some and a chance to show off for others.

quote:

There aren’t too many rules! You can add more tiles, take away tiles, rearrange them! Whatever you want! Just as long as the final product resembles the base in some way and you stay within the current tile size, 16x16 for the tiles, and 16x24(or smaller) for the player!

Here's how my attempt worked out.
