I really don't get what the issue is running XBMC on ATV2. I've been doing it for 2 years now without major issues. I have the latest XBMC on the latest iOS, and the only thing it chokes on is wmv files. Wired network off my Mac Mini fileserver (with drives hooked up via USB) and it plays fine. Perhaps you need a different skin? I know that a lot of the high-shiny-graphic ones make the ATV dog out - but the basic Confluence one works fine.

I've got two ATV2's now (after a nice trade for some computer hardware) and have the same experience with both.

I guess I really never noticed much slowness - or if I did, i ignored it. I am just happy xbmc will play anything I throw at it without requiring a server like Plex.

HUGE SPACEKABLOOIE posted:Greetings apple drones! If you are wanting to JB an ATV you need an ATV2 - ATV3's are not jailbreakable. The ATV has HDMI and Optical audio out, and ATV2 is 720p so you would be all set. Just warning you though, unless you get really lucky, expect to pay $150+ for an ATV2, as everyone who has them to sell knows that they are not available and they are a hot commodity.

I currently have one of the WDTV Live boxes, but if the ATV will handle everything I use the WDTV for that'd be awesome. I've got some noob questions so I can make sure I understand correctly how the ATV would fit in with the rest of my entertainment center/home network. #1 and #2: I would highly recommend Plex and PlexConnect. Then you don't have iTunes bloat and Plex can handle mkv's like a boss. #3: You can airplay from your iPad 2. I believe everything else you said would be correct. #4: Yes, they have to be on the same network - they don't have to be wireless as long as they are on the same network / on a subnet that can talk to each other, etc.

I really like PlexConnect but everything I know about jailbreaking my phone tells me not to update this thing ever. I updated mine to current and did not lose the PlexConnect capability. It's a DNS hack outside of the ATV so it would be very difficult to fix.

That is strange, Feenix. I'm running this on a 2011 Mac Mini and I never *have* to reboot it. Usually it happens only when an update requires it for OSX It's been solid for me. What issues are you having that requires the reboot?

# ¿ Jul 23, 2013 13:17 |

That is strange. The only time I've had that happen is if it's trying to access something Plex has no metadata for (i.e. home-created movies, porn, etc.) In that case I just hit Play instead of select and it goes past the metadata-displaying phase and works. Might not be the same issue since you said it happened just launching trailers, but.. Also make sure you run the python script with sudo or it won't bind to the port right. (Yes, I've had all these happen to me. )

Gotcha. Do you run anything like LitleSnitch or anything firewall related on your Mac? That could be interfering with ports opening closing. Is the terminal window show any output that might be helpful here? I know when mine gets a DNS request it outputs all of that to the terminal window.

Mr. Nice! posted:If you're ripping your movies why not just rip them in an itunes compatible format? iTunes can point to files on a server and pull them right up on an appletv without issue. Then it can't break. The reason I don't do that is because I don't want GIGS of movies slowing down iTunes, which already has a very large music collection to choke on. Though I do also admit to the problem eventually resolving itself as I've stopped buying new releases on BluRay and just buy them from the iTunes store - but those stream instead of downloading to my local PC.

Minidust, just to answer your question, using Plex won't break any of your subscription stuff. It's basically just using a signed developer certificate on the device and pointing it to a local DNS server that intercepts the Trailers app calls and redirects them to Plex - everything else routes the same. If you ever do run into anything odd that might block (like I've seen that Apple Software updates sometimes won't call home) just revert your DNS back to normal - do what you need to do - then swap it back. Takes 30 seconds.

Okay some questions for you Feenix 1) is your iMac connected/wired to same router that serves your 5ghz network? Please provide the following info: iMac: (Under Network System Prefs) AppleTV: And finally the results from a ping and trace route to the AppleTV's IP - open your Terminal.app and do the following: If you can't ping/traceroute it means they are on different networks. (For example, when I was writing up this post I realized my Office AppleTV I use on the treadmill was on my Guest network, which does NOT have access to my iMac's network. Once I moved it to the correct internal network they could see each other. I think that is what is happening with you.) Hope this helps! I'll check back later / tonight and see how you do. You need to set the DNS on your AppleTV to point to your computer. It's currently pointing to your router, which is what is normal. Plex connect requires you to have it as your computer.

Some folks have noted that in the Developer portal, they now allow you to specify up to 100 Apple TV devices as developer devices. Before they didn't break it out. So hopefully that is a sign that something is happening in the background.

I have three AppleTVs and are all used for slightly different purposes. The main one (and main purpose) is in the home theater, and that serves up all my media I have bought on the iTunes store (I don't use cable TV, so when shows I like air, I buy them and watch them from iTunes via ATV) , allows me to use Plex for those videos I don't get from iTunes / old stuff I've converted from old DVDs and such, and allows me to Airplay music and video from my laptop. The bedroom ATV is much the same, but is mainly used as an Airplay device for music through the soundbar, but I occasionally watch an episode of Top Gear before bed. The gaming room ATV is used almost exclusively for Airplaying maps and images for use during gaming sessions.
