Where do fists come from?
Here is the new thread for posting good creative resources for any and all creative fields. The old thread is here.

Rules:

1. Please start the reply with what field/practice it is for in bold... example: PHOTOSHOP, DESIGN, 3D, WRITING, PAINTING, ETC.

2. Give a good description of what the resource is and don't forget to provide the link. Sample pics are ok but keep them to a minimum.

3. If a resource sucks or is spam, just flag it and I'll make sure a mod takes care of it.

*Note, there is some overlap between sections.

------------------------

WRITING

Goonreads - SA members can post their books, promote their books, and have an author blog hosted at the site. http://forums.somethingawful.com/sh...hreadid=3509534 is our thread, which has a lot more info. Books and authors are very well organized in a listing that auto-updates every time a book is posted. Also available are goon services, such as editorial and illustration.

Professional
Duotrope - Searchable database for literary magazines with Writers' Market-like info (what genres they take, how much they pay, when they're reading submissions, etc).
NewPages.com - A reader's resource for finding literary journals.
Mediabistro - Jobs, classes, community and news for media professionals.

AgentQuery - A database of literary agents.
Preditors and Editors - A guide to publishers and publishing services.
Proper Manuscript Format - Includes templates for novels, short stories, and poems.

Business Rusch Publishing Articles - Good blog on the business of writing, including contract negotiation.
Science Fiction & Fantasy Writers of America - Includes guides to Standard Manuscript Format and also home to Writer Beware, the publishing scam watch.

Critique Groups

Critique Circle - Online writing workshop. Works on a credit basis, meaning you must give critiques to get them.
Zoetrope - The Virtual Studio is an online workshop program for fiction writers, screenwriters, storyboard artists etc.

Writing Basics
Daily Grammar - A comprehensive archive of grammar lessons.
Daily Writing Tips - Your one stop shop for tricky grammar rules.
Grammar Girl - Quick and Dirty Tips for Better Writing.
Ken Rand: The 10% Solution - Best book I've found on line-editing, hands down. The ebook can be found at Fictionwise. Since the forum reformats the direct link and screws it up, it's found here http://www.fictionwise.com/ebooks/b19307/The-10-Solution/Ken-Rand/ but you have to type in the question mark at the end manually to make it work. It strips it for some reason.

The ebook link to the 10% Solution seems to not work? If I go to Fictionwise manually it works, but for some reason your link doesn't. Also thanks for the book recommendation, it's nice.

EDIT: good god, I can't spell recomenddation correctly.

Thanks for the heads up. It seems the forum is screwing with url formatting. It's stripping the question mark off the end of the url for some reason. Since I can't seem to make it work, I've put the full url there and you have to add the ? to the end manually to make it work. :eng99:

Not a "how-to" but a general overview of process and methods. The information and concepts can easily be applied to other illustration work.

Design Inspiration

http://designspiration.net/ Pretty much the only design inspiration site you'll ever need again. Has the best search function known to man (just start typing).

Speaking of creative resources... what do we think about sharing vendors for creative professionals? Real world example: my studio is currently looking for a good, reliable printer in the UK but we're US based so the search is kinda tricky. I'd love to have a place to pose this type of question w/o starting a new thread. (Also, if you're a UK goon with a recommendation, please let me know! Kinda time sensitive.)

e: Oh man I can't believe someone hasn't suggested The Noun Project. Incredibly valuable resource for when you need a free, open source, CC-licensed icon of pretty much anything in the entire world. This would fall under Design Resources I believe.

e2: PS. I was the person in the last thread who suggested MooTools (Design Resources again)... that should probably be replaced with jQuery as it's pretty much the standard javascript library these days. I hardly ever see anyone using MooTools anymore.

Amazing web site if you're doing a lot of video work. For a flat $70/month - the cost of one clip at Shutterstock - you get access to a HUGE library of stock footage and After Effects templates. Most of it is quite good, it's well organized, and they keep adding more.

GENERIC/UBIQUITOUS RESOURCE:

Dover Publications to the rescue!

Pictura Vector Designs
Dover Electronic Clip Art Series (CD-ROM)

And a shitload more from Dover - fonts, caligraphy, more clipart

ART & ILLUSTRATION:

Inspiration/Communities:

The Computer Graphics Hub - https://www.cghub.com: Social Networking site for professionals in the Entertainment Design Industry - Concept Art, Animation, 3D Animation/Modelling, Production Painting, etc.
The Computer Graphics Society - https://www.cgsociety.com: Another portal/Social Network site for creative professionals in the Entertainment Design Industry, like the aforementioned CGHub.
The Dominance War - http://www.dominancewar.com/: Prepare to get your ego raped and utterly annihilated like your anal virginity. A competition where top tier game and movie artisans in the entertainment industry compete for the grand prize of being the best of the best. And no, you'll NEVER top them.

Apps & Tools:

Hardware:
You need this, *AT LEAST* a Wacom Graphics Tablet/Interactive Pen Display. Without it, it's essentially trying to paint with a brick; trying to draw with a mouse. Practically impossible.

Intuos 5 - Cost determines size of tablet and active area, size depends on working preference. Larger resolution work/monitor usually is better handled with larger tablets, but not necessarily required.
Cintiq: - The Ultimate Tool/Toy. Only if you have a shitload of money and the only thing to do with it is to burn it. Costs in excess of usually $2,000 USD - IF YOU'RE LUCKY.

Software:
Adobe Photoshop CS6 - http://www.adobe.com/ Pretty much *THE* tool for professionals in the concept art/production painting/entertainment design field.
Corel Painter 12 - http://www.corel.com/: If you want to emulate traditional media in the digital form.
Art Rage - http://www.artrage.com/: Another alternative to Photoshop and Painter, sort of strikes a balance between the two. Never used it myself.

I concur that Write or Die for writers is worth the investment. Setting a time limit and wordcount goal, then disabling delete and saving (until the goal is met) has helped me get past the urge to be all Kubrick-detailed about my scenes and sentences. 2000 words per hour seems like a healthy, doable speed.

edit: sorry sorry sorry, I should have brought a resource instead of endorsed a product.

Also I'm not sure if this would be accepted or not, but I found a blog with tons of (admittedly beefcake) male models posing, most show in B/W. It's very handy for illustrators, I gotta say. And there's quite a few good poses in there that are pretty artsy.

http://malemodelsvintagebeefcake.blogspot.com/

EDIT: Oh god. How could I forget this.

http://todaysinspiration.blogspot.com/

Today's Inspiration is one of, if not THE, best blogs for illustration from the 40's to the 60's. Almost every week there's a new artist being spotlighted, with high-res photos of his work posted. It's basically Mecca for illustrators. I highly recommend this.

EDIT:

Got another:

Gurafiku is a collection by Ryan Hageman of the history of Japanese graphic design. Pretty cool stuff here, a great source of inspiration.

Is there a good website or book with a study regimen for learning to draw/sketch?

I want to eventually get into some painting but obviously need other chops first. I know you can just basically say " DRAW DRAW DRAW" but I need something structured along the lines of "ok today we work on this type of shading draw the following" with examples and tips on technique.

I made this post for another thread, but it works for you, too

quote:

I would strongly recommend taking at least an introductory drawing course at your local community college, but if you can't afford it, or don't have the time I can recommend this book

Which is a great introduction to drawing. It doesn't really have any information that other drawing books don't, but it does have a series of assignments and lessons (a couple hundred of them, actually) which will provide you with the structure you need to advance your skills, especially in the beginning.

Just released. An alternative to Anastasiy's 'Magic Picker' going to try Coolorus out, and review them. But unfortunately, their servers are getting zerg rushed.

This thing is great! There is also a third alternative which is free, and is a bit more stable than Anastasiy's Magic Picker:

Len White's Painter's Wheel

I don't know if this one works in CS6, though.

May I request a reference, please?
I like to draw people and characters, but I don't know of any collection or archive of various faces. Posemaniacs.com is great for getting poses but they all have the same face, and this has been a bit of a crutch to me. Googling "face references" or anything of the sort feels wrong and like I'd just get awkward results and stuff that isn't free to use as reference anyway. Would anyone kindly point me in the direction of a resource that fits this description please?

Check out The Drawing Script, it sounds like exactly what you're looking for.

This should probably be in the OP too.

Here's a site which accomplishes something I'd been looking for: aggregating an endless scrolling page of Flickr photos according to search terms.

Writing and publishing

Goonreads.com (new site, now up and running). SA members can post their books, promote their books, and have an author blog hosted at the site. http://forums.somethingawful.com/showthread.php?threadid=3509534 is our thread, which has a lot more info. Books and authors are very well organized in a listing that auto-updates every time a book is posted.

We'd like to do writing contests in the future, once the site gets more traffic. Also available are goon services, such as editorial and illustration. The services section hopefully will grow; the books listed are about 50 so far.

Great for creature design, or the need for a good reference of a snarling animal, this site has loads of photographs of animal mouths from bears to sharks. I don't think it's been updated for a few years, but the site seems to have remained intact in the meantime.

I found a treasure trove of reference/tutorials by a japanese artist who goes by the handle 0033.

You have to sign up for a free account with Pixiv to view the images, but once you do, just go to the page I linked to and select 'Works' and then 'Submitted Illustrations'. Here are just a few to whet the appetite:

John K. of Ren & Stimpy fame has a blog in which he teaches basics of classic cartooning and comic layout. He uses his own drawings and those of the comic artists cartoonists he admires. It is a lot of fun.

The blog is a little overwhelming to search, so he has a curriculum page with links to specific lessons:

Spider Robinson's posterior.
Science fiction writing resources.
Project Rho. Despite its archaic appearance it is an amazing resource, especially for those interested in space-opera. The Atomic Rockets section in particular is an absolute gold-mine.

RTalsorian Games has interesting articles regarding cyberpunk.

C-ship: Relativistic ray traced images. Knowing a little about special relativism goes a long way for stories that include STL star-ships travelling at relativistic speeds.

The Encyclopedia of Science Fiction contains information regarding most sf works predating 1995.

Tabletop RP Game books should not be excluded from research and some have tools for building worlds.

Mega Traveller World Builder gets elbows deep in randomly generated civilizations and planetary systems.

The Uplift module for GURPS has a section dedicated to randomly generating alien species.

Science fiction themed game books are often ripe with ideas for the picking. The more ideas you can put in your head, the more story seeds and themes for your writing. Maybe one day we can all move beyond the post-apocalyptic earth setting.

Weapons: A Pictorial History. Great for time travel, low-tech meets high-tech encounters, technological regression scenarios. If you get this book keep an eye out for a 'spring-gun for discouraging poachers'.
In fact, all non-fiction written by Edwin Tunis are great resources for the scenarios described above.

This one was deleted, and I'm not too surprised since I think they still sell these things (right?). My brother has it though, and it really is great for making a celestial host of weird and wonderful worlds relatively painlessly.

Oh snap! Thanks for pointing that out. I've redirected the link to an article about it at the Fantasy Author's Handbook website. There are no copies of the World Builder’s Handbook available for purchase anywhere on the internet, except for rare ebay appearances maybe.

Could I get a recommendation for an online gallery like Deviant Art, but a little more professional? I know that there several people here that use Tumblr and such, and I was hoping to get some feedback about whatever services they use.
