lorn Wayne posted:I like how the Human Rights Act apparently only benefits terrorists and foreign criminals. Isn't that sort of the point? It's like whining about the Geneva Convention only applying to political prisoners.

Jeoh posted:SPEW (Socialist Party of England & Wales, formerly Militant) is pretty big and also a bunch of Trots. Is there something wrong with being a Trot? I thought it was just historically the UKs Trot parties were a bit poo poo.

This is the bit that seems most bonkers to me. Vanguardism as some kind of secret cabal ready to spring into action is an incredibly simplistic and small-scale way to act. Would it not make more sense to be open about your socialist leanings and attempt to steer political discourse in a general left-wards direction? Or does that contradict too much with the revolution-or-nothing attitude of most of the left?

Oh dear me posted:No, US Christianity is a weird thing. We're a much more secularized society, in line with Europe and Scandinavia - although that is probably because of the personal security a welfare state brings. Perhaps it will change now that's being demolished. Which is pretty odd, given the whole official religion thing.

Darth Walrus posted:In more news of people being stupid, a member of the Oxford debating society has asked Stephen Yaxley-Lennon/Tommeh to participate in a debate on nationalism. Sources are unclear on whether the motion he'd table would be 'kick all the brown people out' or 'kick all the brown people out'. I'm loving all the grammatical errors in there. Is the HuffPo just bad at reporting, or all the Oxford Union representatives just poo poo at using proper sentences? goddamnedtwisto posted:I think "No Colours" policies are either snobbish "Ugh no working-class people in here" or in Croydon, where Palace and Millwall fans trash the place at least twice a year, although obviously that's excluding pubs in the immediate vicinity of grounds with a history of trouble who have the no colours policy for pretty sound safety reasons. There's a No Colours pub in Edinburgh that I think shows football (can't check, it's also Over 25s Only) and looks to be a typical working-class football type pub. Only place I've seen do it.
