Well here's a doozy for you. That wasn't the first trailer for an American Godzilla movie. There exists a trailer for a version scripted by Ted Elliot and Terry Rossio that never made it to production, and it was made in 1992, six years before Roland Emmerich's highly-polished turd. If I'm not mistaken, that trailer preceded one of the Godzilla movies in Japan.

Speaking of box office disappointments from Sony, you guys might be familiar with the protracted, often disastrous post-production of "Last Action Hero". The test screening that went so badly Columbia ordered the audience comment cards destroyed, the ad space bought for a satellite launch, and the mad rush to complete the film in time for it's release date, are just a few of the mind-boggling misadventures that made it one of the most notorious flops of the 90s.

Columbia spent a large sum of money producing this teaser for the summer of 1992. Notice it ends by saying that "Last Action Hero" is 'The Big Ticket of '93' before showing the June 18th release date.

Guess what came out June 11th?

^^^^ Yeah, the Hollywood press had a field day with the Jurassic vs. Arnold angle. LAH, though, had a ridiculously tortured production, with no one--including the many, many high-profile writers brought on board at mammoth expense--sure of what tone to take with it. In the end, no one really wanted to see a tongue-in-cheek take on the action genre. They just wanted a good action movie.

This thread reminds me of the time I got actively annoyed with a filmmaker: when "Castaway" was circulating its trailer and getting criticism for spoiling the movie's central mystery, Robert Zemeckis was quoted as saying he had no problem with it and that audiences want those beats laid out for them. It just sounded so cynical and so...wrong.

I loveeeeeeed the ad campaign for District 9. It didn't give any information about the movie besides "There are aliens here, they can't leave, they're separated from humans." It really drew me into the movie. I was there, opening day, with my rear end in a seat.

One movie that always comes to mind when thinking about trailers is Cellular, a pretty stupid and forgettable semi-comedic thriller that was re-cut to look super dramatic and suspenseful.

The Ryan Phillipe movie "Way of the Gun" went in the exact opposite direction - the trailer made it out to be a fairly light buddy action movie, when in fact it was quite dark.

Yeah, I was gonna mention Comedian. That's one of the all time greats. I haven't even seen the movie, but I remember that trailer perfectly.

Here's a few more I like:

L.I.E. (2001)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D_8kklAZo80

This is a style of trailer that I love when it's done well. No narrative, just the mood of the movie conveyed through music and imagery - sinister yet plaintive, with a promise of transgression. The trailer for L.I.E. (starring Paul Dano and Brian Cox) has always stuck with me.

Point Blank (1967)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N2sKgsKTeEM

The John Boorman/Lee Marvin crime classic (based on the Parker character) is as mean and nasty as they come, and the trailer gets that across with the letters of the title appearing on-screen to the rhythm of Marvin firing a gun into an empty bed. You also get a taste of the psychedelia and New Hollywood nihilism that make the movie so distinct. The whole trailer's keyed around the repeated shot of Lee Marvin walking purposefully down a hallway, and by the end of it you don't know where he's going, but you know he's gonna kick someone's rear end when he gets there.

Alien (1979)

Two things. One, I've never seen Point Blank but I now realize how much The Naked Gun/Police Squad was trying to get a Point Blank vibe and how much the MST3K-skewered Mitchell was trying to do the same thing, only seriously.

And here's the Aliens teaser, which follows a similar format to Alien

The shots of the egg (which looks like an egg, but has those weird pimples) are replaced with shots of a harsh, alien (har har) landscape, followed by shots from the movie with the same harsh, electronic screeching music from the previous film's teaser. In a way, it's establishing its pedigree as the sequel to a masterpiece, but also establishing its own identity within the franchise.

http://youtu.be/fheA6Ua_nNc

The Alien3 teaser deliberately apes the Alien poster with the egg and implies an interesting plotline involving the game over scenario of the xenomorphs making it to Earth, which obviously never happened. I guess it's just another example of the problems that movie had in production.

http://youtu.be/Bk_x9W1xKng

The Alien Resurrection trailer just feels really generic and there really isn't much else to say about it.

http://youtu.be/ci9nf8uW0uk

Here's the Alien vs Predator teaser. Shockingly enough, it actually does look like it could be amazing, but unlike the other teasers, it shows us nothing from the movie.

http://youtu.be/j1sTgQj0Nec

I can't find the AvP:R teaser, and I'm not sure if one was ever made.

And while I'm at it, here's the Prometheus teaser. There's a clear influence from the Alien teaser, but the change in the music and slight shift in structure tells us that while it may be related to the Alien franchise, it's also going to be somewhat separate.

Aliens has one of the most rad trailers in existence. I had the DVD of "The Abyss" when I was 12; this trailer was an easter egg on it, and I can still remember how pumped I was that my parents were going to let me see the "Alien" movies once I turned 13. :allears:

Nobody did trailers better than Alfred Hitchcock. How unusual is it for a director to appear in his own trailer to promote the film in question? In the trailer for Psycho, there's no footage from the film, and not much indication of the story. Hitchcock gives us a tour of the Bates Motel and points out locations and props that will feature in the story for over six minutes. This trailer for The Birds has a similar approach, and is hilarious to boot.

Other great Hitchcock trailers where the director makes himself present are North by Northwest, Marnie, Frenzy, and even his final film, Family Plot.

There is another director who put himself in his own trailers; B-movie maestro William Castle, who did this unforgettable trailer for Mr. Sardonicus.

That Argo trailer is fantastic. It made me check out some of the trailers for another '70 true story, the German movie The Baader Meinhof Complex about the RAF terror group. As the story is far more widely known in Europe then in America the trailers are also very different depending on the audience.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ue7StqHBMiI

The German trailer shows some shots from the scenes roughly in chronological order. Riots, the first generation getting into terror and being arrested while the second generation carries on. Everyone knows the story already. About half the trailer is used to showcase the actors likeness to the actual subjects whose faces will be known to just about everyone in Germany. It's sold as a sort of documentary where the effort in recreating 1970's Germany and the people involved in the RAF as realistically as possible is the main selling point.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vxadxpXSwEE

Another German trailer which is basically a recap of the whole movie.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=11iuHVO4OKA

In this English language version the movie is introduced as "from the director of Downfall" and the protests against the Vietnam war are prominently featured, much more then in the movie itself. Scenes are kind of randomly presented with "a true story" added for those unaware of the subject matter. At the end some typical trailer music is added over explosions to get some action movie feeling going. The lack of subtitles and clear use of the word 'loving' in German makes me think this is not an American trailer.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6IVKAAsqcrI

Now here things get really crazy for this American trailer. This massive trailer presents the movie with comic book subtitles and even some speech balloons. Except for an intro the whole political background is tossed out for showing young sexy people doing cool poo poo before The Man cracks down and throws them in jail. Review quotes and terms are thrown on the screen with '60 music on the background.

Stanley Kubrick had insane amounts of control over the marketing of his films. He picked all the poster designs, approved trailers (and by some accounts cut them himself), and had veto rights over which images and footage could be used to promote his films. With the trailer for Dr. Strangelove, he revolutionized film marketing with an eye-catching collage of rapid cuts and giant text. He took the technique even further with the trailer for A Clockwork Orange, which frequently shows up on best-of lists and has been parodied and copied dozens if not hundreds of times.

Somebody already posted the excellent trailer for "The Shining." I don't know if this is true or not, but I've heard that trailer was released right around the time the MPAA made a major change in regard to the violent content they'd allow in 'green-band' trailers. Everyone knows that blood is flowing from the elevator, but I heard Kubrick and Warner somehow convinced the MPAA that it was rusted water coming out of the elevators. :wtc:

If I was in charge of making trailers for the big blockbusters, I'd make sure they were always holding something back that people had to wait until opening night for. Then I went to the theatre and it basically had no impact because I had already seen it in the trailer 15 times. The moments people should be talking about when they leave the theatre shouldn't be in the trailers. I don't watch red band trailers for the same reason.
