The MSJ posted:Sicario 2: Day of The Soldado, where Alejandro pulls a Logan with the girl from Transformers 5. This looks absolutely terrible, like a calculated inversion of the principles of the original film. They're cribbing scenario shots and music cues left and right from Sicario in the most blatant, uncreative, manner and then recontextualizing them. It's gross, odious and obvious. Day of the Soldado might be the single worst title for anything since Rise of the Tomb Raider.

Or, "Dia del Soldado" doesn't work in that people, regardless of ethnicity and background, who don't speak Spanish would with no trouble get so far as "Day of," "Day of the" and be stuck understanding only part of a title they were essentially tasked with translating. Presenting it in English already tells the audience that Soldado is a name or title, whatever, and let's them move on to deciding to see the film. But no, loving white people huehuehuehuehue

The movie's about American contractors going south of the border to play cowboys and indians, of course they want white armchair gun nuts to go see it.

What are the principles of the original film? I'm glad Emily Blunt's character is gone. A rivalry between Brolin and Alejandro seems much more interesting.

viral spiral posted:What are the principles of the original film? I don't agree with Beanpole, largely because I think Day of the Soldado looks dope as gently caress, but... the point of Sicario was that the War on Drugs is an insane boondoggle that has done nothing but make the drug problem worse globally, and cause a poo poo-ton of pointless bloodshed to boot. the scenes where Alejandro does his thing aren't really played as "cool," they're loving scary. Day of the Soldado seems to be pivoting the character into a straight-up dark action hero, and there's a danger of it actively celebrating what the first movie pointed out as staggeringly awful.

Sicario is an all-timer, but I have no problem with a sequel that dumps the main character and reverses all of the themes and politics of the first movie, although I'm not sold on that being the case here. Basically, I'm fine if this ends up being a better written, acted and shot version of those DTV Jarhead sequels.

If I remember right the first movie was also marketed as an action-heavy shoot-em-up too. It’d be hard not to miss Villaneuve, Deakins and Jóhannsson but the writer from the first one is back and the new director’s resume is interesting. Plus Benicio has a cool gun

Even so, the film (as shown) has a pretty nice visual aesthetic that I fucks with. I'm also one of those guys who wasn't quite on board until I saw the last trailer.

It could just be that internally Fox is just doing whatever the gently caress they want, cause by next year they're either out or under Disney's thumb. Dave's cousin Scumbag Vinny has an idea for a kick-rear end trailer for Aliens? gently caress it, not like it's gonna matter next February.

Shame about the film itself. I gave it a rewatch recently, and while I may have been a bit hard on it at the time, the fundamental problems I had with it still remained - largely around the characters and the way in which the plot itself is structured.
