While this trailer is really just an excerpt from the film, it's still pretty loving incredible. The fun starts about a minute into it.

I read that at its premiere screening there were constant walk-outs due to people feeling nauseous.

I've seen this documentary. It is insane. It's one of the few documentaries I've seen where it really feels like something truly groundbreaking. I'm sure it'll get word around once more people see it.

This looks amazing, can you say a little more about it?

The executive producers are Errol Morris and Werner Herzog. I know they aren't really creatively involved but...what a dream team.

Well shortly after I just decided to make a thread about it. http://forums.somethingawful.com/showthread.php?threadid=3551333

You can get more information in there.

I wasn't impressed by the trailer for Ain't Them Bodies Saints but I'll still see it regardless. David Lowery has proven himself to be someone to watch (he edited Upstream Color among other films).

It's like this trailer was custom made for me

Edit: Now that I've seen a clearer quality trailer (which I've included above) there's some NWS material in here. So fair warning.

The thing that kind of bugs me about that trailer is they're all yelling at the ticket seller when he doesn't control anything. Yeah, they're good points but why bring them up to that guy?

You're making a lot of assumptions here. It's probably best to wait and see the film (and that scene in its proper context) before saying anything.

It looks funny, it got raves at Sundance and I honestly can't wait to see it.

What assumptions? It's a ticket seller getting yelled at by a mob because they didn't like the movie. There's nothing to assume.

His assumption that the ticket seller getting berated over the treatment of black people in movies is meant to be taken seriously, as if there's something progressive/positive being said here. Part of the absurdity (and what's funny about the scene) is how their complaints are targeted at the wrong person.

I haven't seen it, but going by the reception at Sundance it sounds like the film skewers every side of the issues it brings up. But maybe that's not the case. I'll have to see the movie to find out.

High Rise is getting made by Ben Wheatley, whose last film literally turned into a massive magic mushroom hallucination. I have a feeling he'll keep that deterioration aspect in and handle it with ease.

Ben Wheatley is a lovely Director. He even managed to be the worst director in this last season of Doctor Who, which is really saying something.

I'm not a particularly big fan of his, but I disagree with that assessment. I definitely find he's been on a downward trajectory though. Down Terrace is brilliant, Kill List didn't do much for me (although it TRIED to do something new, so I give it credit), Sightseers just wasn't that funny, and A Field in England is a slog of a journey just to get to one short, kinda cool hallucination sequence. But is he a lovely director? Nah. He's establishing a pretty diverse, interesting career for himself, and that alone is worth plenty. I'm looking forward to High Rise, but I'm trying to keep my expectations in check.

I get the feeling that this movie will be a boring romance drama for the first two acts, with the "horror" of the third act that will be too late to really make up for the first two. Nothing really stands out as being particularly intriguing. All it really does is make me want to rewatch Let The Right One In.

I've seen Spring and this is not what happens at all.

(mild spoilers) It definitely withholds the horror aspect for a bit, but not all the way to the end.

I dislike most modern ghost story/horror films because they always fall apart at the end when they have to try to find a way to explain what's happening (and it usually ends up being dumb).

So, I'm hoping this isn't a supernatural tale that will fall prey to that because goddamn it looks unnerving as gently caress.

Oh boy, you're gonna be disappointed as hell with this one. I saw it last year at a festival, and was utterly baffled by people praising it. The first half or so, sure, it's creepy, but it falls apart in the worst way.

For those curious to know the horrible truth

Eventually the twins just tie the mom up and proceed to torture her in a variety of horrible ways, whether it's super gluing her mouth shut (and then using scissors to slice them open) or flossing her teeth down until it slices through her gums. And then it turns out one of the twins is dead and the surviving twin has been imagining him the whole time! It's like torture porn poo poo from 2004/2005, blagh.

So based on the synopsis it sounds like there might not actually be anything supernatural going on at all. I don't know if that's actually true but it is an interesting premise.

Not giving away a spoiler here but I'll put it in tags in case anyone prefers to go in absolutely blind, but there's zero ambiguity. In the first 10 minutes it's established that there is a full-blown supernatural entity in the woods.

Maybe it's because I'm not from the US but The Witch was...not good. All it has going for it are its performances and technical skills. It's just not scary in the slightest because it's too concerned with showing off its extremely precise form. I look forward to it coming out so the hype train can finally come to an end.

And Hardcore Henry (or just Hardcore) is way, way worse. Like, already worst of the year material. So juvenile and stupid, nothing more than a cool showcase for stunt work.

On top of it, there's almost nothing people can agree on as being scary, so it's a nonstarter.

Everyone watches movies differently, and it's not so much about a film not being scary than why someone didn't consider it scary. For me, The Witch was just too concerned with its own rigorous form and precision to focus on mood, atmosphere, mystery, or anything else that could make the film feel like anything but a collection of future "One Perfect Shot" tweets. The fact that it has zero ambiguity doesn't help either, meaning it's a lot of emptiness in between actual poo poo happening. And it didn't have to be scary either! I didn't find It Follows or The Babadook scary but I still enjoyed them. Anyway, this is best reserved for the horror thread (which I thought my last post was in, whoops) or a thread on The Witch if someone makes it.

Back to trailers, I caught some interesting stuff at Slamdance that should definitely be on people's radar. First up is If There's a Hell Below, which only has a trailer here for some reason.

The other one that I'm kind of surprised hasn't gotten recognition is Embers, which premiered at a small film fest last fall and has fallen through the cracks. This one takes place 10 years after a disease wipes out people's ability to have memories. It cuts back and forth between 5 different storylines, each of which looks at how a certain aspect of our existence would change if we no longer had the ability to remember. The highlights for me were a story involving a couple who would wake up every day forgetting how they knew each other, and a father/daughter not afflicted by the disease who live in an underground bunker isolated from the rest of the world. The trailer is only on Vimeo https://vimeo.com/152598775

Hopefully these will come out at some point later this year, I'm kind of happy to see 2016 kick off with some really tiny, clever genre movies.

Boring inside baseball stuff about The Bronze:

That was one of the last movies Relativity Media snatched up for distribution (after it opened Sundance where critics didn't like it, and that's a fest where people are typically positive on almost everything) before they went bankrupt. For some reason Sony Classics decided to buy it from Relativity, and part of that deal was that it had to get a wide release since Relativity promised one. Sony Classics had no idea what to do with it (remember, this is the company known for releasing Son of Saul and Still Alice aka Oscar friendly prestige), so it bombed terribly. I only remember this because they realized how bad it was bombing and tried to make a viral video with Tonya Harding that...well...see for yourself

First Reformed is a very good movie and I hope people try to see it knowing as little as possible. The trailer has to give stuff away of course but part of the thrill of seeing it for the first time was really having no idea where this thing was going to end up (and where it does end up is bonkers).

Schrader started out doing criticism and wrote a book on what he called transcendental cinema (filmmakers like Bresson, Dreyer, and Ozu). This is his first time trying to make his own version of that, and it works quite well.
