I dunno, a lot of the jokes seem to come from things set up in the first film. Which I'm cool with. I laughed pretty hard though. Zoolander is one of my favorite comedies. It's so relentlessly stupid in the best way.

I avoided the trailers to Shutter Island like a plague. I ended up loving the movie. No one else did, and from what I heard it was the trailers fault or something. I dunno, I thought it was fun.

I know the joke at the beginning with the kids saying "Does anything about that look normal to you?" and it's supposed to be how fat and weird he is....but gently caress he looks hidious. Why couldn't they just shove him in a comical fat suit? That whole bit gives me the willies.

I really don't like this "Movies aren't supposed to do anything!" thing that comes up. I mean, yeah, a film does have a thing it's trying to do. You can kill the author all you want, but they did set out to make you feel something. They're not putting a rorschach test up on the screen. That being said, of course you feel the way you do. And you can abosolutely disagree with what the author was trying to do there. You might not find the sad scene sad, or the fun scene fun. But there is intent.

I think you're also right on the money. Like, I'll say this about Star Wars, I do feel bad for Anakin in The Phantom Menace, because he's a kid trapped on a poo poo hole planet and is a slave. He is allowed to be free, but at the expense of parting with his mother. You can argue about Jake Lloyd all day, but in writing terms, the sympathy is there.
