Does somebody want to explain the relation between :colbert: and :crossarms:? I've heard an explanation, but it seems like that should be explained somewhere in this thread.

I went to college in Worcester, so I should know this one.

Some dude in Worcester was paid $45 to improve morale at an insurance company. Since it was 1963, rather than do trust falls or team building activities or whatever, he made a picture of a smiling face on a yellow circle. Somehow someone saw this and decided to sell crappy buttons based on that throughout the 70s.

But none of that has anything to do with the :) emoticon. That's there because Wal-Mart bought it as part of a viral ad campaign.
