How important is encumbrance?

I want to sprint all over and spam attacks, so making a small character sounds ideal. But that does mean the littlest knight will be limited to light armor instead of plate? Or is that purely for loot and/or tossing dudes around?

Does the metamorphosis item let you change your pawn's name or gender? I'm really tired of almost every pawn being female and using the same voice as mine. It doesn't help that I picked one of the most generic names ever that I see about 5 of every time I search.

A friend of mine has his fighter pawn in the top 30 or so, and I think half of the reason is because hes a badass looking guy.

I was just attacked by a griffon while doing an escort quest and thought I was screwed. Then a random lizardman hopped on the griffon's back and caused him to ride off into the sunset.

Thank you random lizard, I didn't know that they could even do that.

Kinda thinking of taking him Warrior, just for the ridiculousness of a tiny fat dude wielding a giant 2-handed sword.

I did this and wouldn't recommend it. Weapons scale to the size of the character so having a tiny character gives them a tiny sword, though its still huge in comparison to them. That means they have a smaller attack range which kind of sucks when the point of the warrior class is having giant weapons.

Though I also think warrior pawns are bad in general and are better off switching to fighter or strider so YMMV. That class is a lot more effective when controlled by the player.

Laaaame. 1500 discipline points wasted, I guess. Still, at least I hadn't yet blown all the gold on the ridiculously expensive 2H sword.

Related question - I'm assuming you really couldn't just skip to Gran Soren to take on a hybrid/advanced vocation from the get-go, right? Simply because the entry-level equipment for them tends to cost way, way more than you've got until later anyways? (unless it's an advanced vocation that uses regular base-class gear, like the Assassin, I guess)

You would have to do a few quests to get enough for a weapon, but money in Dragon's Dogma is easy come, easy go. I rushed to Gran Soren and spent almost all of my money on a 2hander for my pawn, but earned it all back within an hour.

Also warrior gets some pretty good passive traits that can be used by other classes(like strength+20%) so its not a total waste to try it out.

The warrior vocation on my main pawn has given me some hokey results. It's like the AI doesn't know how to handle a character wearing badass armor and a huge friggan sword. In battles I've seen her just jump up and down constantly when fighting a bandit, other times they run behind my main character and never seem to engage the enemy (which can be frustrating when bandit archers loving melt mages and you need the warrior in front to draw their fire). Sometimes, warcry works for half a second before the archers resume fire on everyone else except the warrior. Other times they can be pretty decent.

I found warrior pawns to be complete trash unless you're using the "Go!" command. Otherwise they just hang out around you and won't do much. Even then, I think you're better off with different vocations. Warrior players are pretty good and really fun, but pawns just don't handle it as well as they do other vocations. A fighter or ranger with the challenger AI handles stuff like archers far better than warrior does. Its also kind of disheartening to see the AI continually miss with the warrior's signature charge up attacks.

I really wish pawns could be hybrid classes. It'd bring a lot more variety to the party, and I'd get better use out of some of the awesome equipment thats collecting dust in my storage.

Don't try to figure out why people are/aren't renting your pawn, there's literally no logic to it. My level 27 warrior has been rented out like 2-3 times by people for a grand total of ~1,000 RC, never gotten any items or comments, and is rated 3 stars in everything. My level 4 fighter pawn on my other account that is literally the default player model with the default gear (because I just made it to try sending items back and forth) has been rented out about a dozen times, has 4 stars in everything, and has earned that account about 50,000 RC.

People are weird.

People seem to mostly only want fighters or mages. I'd mostly get 3 star ratings with a near perfect warrior pawn that I dumped a ton of points into. When I switch to a half assed fighter that isn't even using mastered skills, I start getting 5 star ratings.

My friend has his pawn in the top 20 or so, and he always changes his pawn to fighter before resting at an inn, because its one of the most desired classes. He has over 8 million RC and gets constant friend requests, so apparently its working. Though he also puts a ton of effort into him and pretty much perfected the AI & best skills for that AI.

Strider/ranger pawns can be awesome but most of them just don't seem to perform that well and its really difficult to find a good one. I haven't changed mine to one of those classes yet so I've yet to find a good combo for them. But looking at the details of the pawns I've hired, most people are playing various strider classes themselves. So its mostly tanks, mages & sorcerors that they want.

Do the personality traits affect if a strider/ranger prefers to use bows, or is that something they just learn? I was thinking about switching my pawn to a sorceror just so I could have the spells I wanted instead of scouring the nexus, but 60 levels of fighter/warrior have skewed his stats quite a bit. I tried switching to ranger instead since a friend was complaining about how hard it is to find a good one. My pawn uses his bow when enemies aren't close, but then switches to daggers when they are, which seems to be a common complaint in this thread. I know you can just remove the daggers to force bow usage, but I've rented pawns that mostly focus on their bow without doing that. Hes a monster climbing champ now, but it'd be nice if he just shot the things instead sometimes.

Swapping to Mystic Knight after 59 levels of Sorcerer/Mage is the most painful thing I have done. Even basic wolves are annoying again.

If its any consolation, mages gone mystic knight seem far stronger than fighters doing the same. All of knight's new abilities are magic based and mages/sorcs have far higher base magic attack. Drop 3 magic cannons on top of each other then spam circle slash. Make sure you have an enchant up and just watch the bullets fly.

Though post game equipment is so strong that base stats only seem to matter before you get it.

I've been considering going from ranger to assassin. I have gone Strider to 15, then ranger to 32. Am I going to be a bit retarded in stats?

The only real "bad" combination is going something heavy on physical attack like assassin or warrior to mage after 50+ levels. Physical attackers still get use out of a magic stat, but mages don't use strength as far as I know. But even then, you'll have much higher HP & defense than someone going pure mage.

Don't worry about stats too much. Try out the different classes!

How do you know who is currently leashed as your "love interest." If I'm going to get anyone, I'd like it to be Mercedes because the other girls in the story are, well...

Supposedly its the first person whose affinity you've maxed out, but if you do Aelinore's quest line you're stuck with her. I had the pink cloud thing on 5 different NPCs, so I don't think thats the best indicator. Its really just 1 short scene and a tiny bit of dialogue so its not a big deal.

That list also contains alternate locations of where you can find that equipment in chests if you're concerned about minor spoilers.

The pride you feel when your pawn comes back with a good rating/review is matched only by the anger and confusion when it comes back with 0 RC and 1/2 stars in everything. gently caress you too, random person on the internet :argh:

This is me all day.

Despite being lv70+ and having about the same amount of hours in the game, my pawn was only hired about 10 times. Overnight I had two people hire mine and give 5 star ratings and I felt like all my work was paying off. Today more people are hiring but I've gotten nothing but no effort 3 star, no gift, no comment ratings. It'd be nice if the comments section had better choices for critiques, but I never get comments anyways.

It doesn't help that my friend has his pawn in the top 10 with well over 20 million RC, which he loves to bring up. :argh:

Your 0 RC sounds more like a troll than anything though.

Also, anyone care to post your "and then Dragon's Dogma really clicked with me moment"?

Early on it was seeing my pawn scale up a cyclops and trick him into ripping his helm off, I shot an arrow at the exposed eye which made him enraged. The cyclops then spun around in anger and promptly fell off a cliff, while my pawn jumped to safety. That was the first time I felt like pawns were pretty awesome and actually pulling their weight. Though sometimes I see him jumping around like an idiot and wonder if hes learning bad habits from me.

My favorite moment was when I was roaming around as an assassin and saw a drake flying about. I took a careful sniper shot to knock him to the ground & expose the weak point in one blow. I then ran up and gouged his heart out, killing him in under 10 seconds. The only thing he managed to say before dying was "WHO ARE YOU?". Its really quite a change going from getting my rear end beat by bandits to being such a badass.

Having my pawn go "What a waste of time" after wrecking the Ur Dragon was kind of funny too.

You're stuck with direwolf unless you give Caxton a better idol. You can try your luck with bluemoon or soulflayer chests for a slight upgrade though. The best way is to just progress the plot, you're close to a point where you'll see better items soon.

I'm trying to make my pawn more versatile as a sorc.

What abilities do you guys want to see more of online? I'll spec my pawn around that, and hope that some of you guys get some use out of him. Nipples needs to get out more.

For sorcs give him holy & fire weapon enchants and make sure he is utilitarian. The 2nd trait is up to you. This helps them keep weapon enchants up, and a lot of personality types won't bother to buff in combat unless something weak to that element shows up, some will do a poor job buffing even then. Even worse is later on when you get fire enchants against mobs that ignore fire and your pawns won't bother to replace it. You can get potions at the encampment near Cassardis to force that type.

For nukes you want high levin, normal maelstrom & normal comestion. The last one is up to you. High fulmination is funny if you're running a heavy melee team, but most people won't be. The reason for not upgrading maelstrom or comestion is that the AI will try to fully charge them up which is a complete waste of time. Normal maelstrom is plenty strong and comestion is best when it can be cast quickly.

Is dark arisen best experienced through a new game? I was going to pick this up soon but I had a level 100 character with all of the ur dragon & everfall equipment so I was worried that it'd be overkill for the new dungeon. I wouldn't mind starting a new game but I have a friend in the same boat, except that I think he ended up capping out his RC in the billions due to having a top 10 pawn and wouldn't want to restart.

Sorry if this is a common question, I've been reading through the thread & google to see whats new.
