I don't think I'm cut out for big drivey breeds. I don't know though. I've only had one dog, a big durfy family lab, and my parents (who were socialists and hippies in the early seventies) had never had a suburban lab and apparently let their previous dogs (black labs) run wild unneutered all over Vancouver Island.

So, uh, if you're on Vancouver Island and keep running into stray durfy black labs, I am sorry.

So he was always anxious and hardly trained. He was from field trials stock, too, but we never did anything.

So I think the only dogs I can think of wanting right now are happy older mutts who can teach me how to be a proper and not terrible dog owner, but the idea of the time commitment is terrifying to me (despite the fact that I currently have four kittens taking up every spare hour I have).

When I'm finally ready I want something medium sized and vaguely active. I think. I like spaniels but I heard they are neurotic with interesting death-related genetic defects.

Gar having just spent ten minutes scrubbing poop off the carpet because the kittens (who had been doing SO WELL until today) decided en masse that under my boyfriend's desk was their new favorite poop spot (THEY HAD BEEN DOING SO WELL GAH), I have no idea what you're on about with the "cats don't have gross poops you have to clean" thing. Cats are truly, truly disgusting.

That red thing is their surrogate mom stuffed doll. They love him and rip all his hair out. I've had a lot of success with yarn-hair comfort toys for kittens.

Kittens are gross as gently caress, and I have NO IDEA how to curb this behaviour. I checked her out, and she was slimy and wet but totally unhurt. She doesn't seem to care or push him off, so, uh...I don't know.

Here's some more photos. Sarabi's really taken to these guys :3:

PS: the Tuxedo one is named Bruce Wayne, the orange and white one is Oliver Queen, the tiny dilute tortie is Dinah Lance and the fluffy tortie is, uh, Tuesday. The only other good female Justice League names are Diana and Shyera. Diana is boyfriend's mom's name, and Shyera is too much name for one kitten.

Ughhhhhh Dinah has had horrible diarrhea for 24 hours now. I'm getting into vet-taking territory here. I'm especially nervous because the rescuer who trapped these kittens from their feral colony told me that there had been distemper in the colony - a major symptom of which is profuse diarrhea. But these cats have lived with me for 2 weeks now, and I can't figure out if we're out of the woods there - wiki and the other sites I found via google don't tell me if there's an incubation period for distemper, or how long that might be.

I think she's got the runs because I've been slowly but surely changing their diet off royal canin and on to better stuff. The others are ok but she's smaller than they are.

Does anyone have any wisdom they can share, or is this e-vet time? All my regular vets are closed. I'll call the e-vet if she doesn't seem to be getting any better but I've never had a lot of success with them giving me information, their receptionists are clueless and the doctors are pretty much never available.

She's drinking water, doesn't seem dehydrated and is still eating. She's not as active as her siblings but I wouldn't really classify her as "lethargic", she just wants to be around people and do people stuff instead of cat things (I'm working on this).

Is there something I can give her to help firm up her stool or make her feel less gross? Should I switch back to royal canin?

My day was kind of lovely, how was yours? Would you like a kitten photodump?

Here's one anyway:

"Fluffy" (look we couldn't find a name for her ok?)

This girl is getting pre-adopted (hopefully) by a nice lady, which is good because Sarabi is so attached to her I think I'd become a foster failure if she wasn't snatched up. They eat together, they have bathtime and they cuddle at night. Breaking them up is going to be so hard!

Sarabi's really a great foster mom to all four kitties, constantly supervising and playing with them. Here are Dinah and Oliver getting baths:

Dinah went through an rear end in a top hat phase where she tried desperately to get at anything you were eating. Here she tries for my latte. Bad kitty! No lattes!

This photo is blurry but it's Bruce Wayne's best impression of Batman:

Boyfriend and Dinah have a special relationship. He keeps dropping hints that he wants to adopt her, I am ambivalent:

Took my fosters in for their alteration at my local low-cost. Four rescue ladies, two teenage girls who didn't spay their female kitties fast enough (but who I guess were at least doing the babies) and a crazy-rear end dog lady.

She had a really gorgeous big poofy dog that she was claiming was a ~*malamute/ wolf hybrid*~. Google tells me this is a real thing. I am sad. It just looked like a big durfy malamute mix!

Apparently he "hates car trips" and she had to "choke him out" several times to get all 100+ lbs of him into her tiny Nissan cube.

Also she's the Kind of Person who

So how much can I really expect Boyfriend to take?

We had four foster kittens for about 8 weeks, which I consider to be normal. We had one for an extra week or two. He and Sarabi both loved on this little thing. I did okay because I knew we had a great home set up for her as soon as she was big enough to fix.

She left today and Boyfriend was pretty despondent. He's never done kittens before. It's pretty easy for me because I've seen the homes we've been sending them to and they're foster DREAM homes - older cat ladies who freaking adore their cats and are looking to replace the 17 year old who just passed away. That kind of thing.

There's so many abandoned kittens right now that they're BEGGING me to take more. I just don't know whether I can ask Boyfriend to deal with more heartache. He's SO good with Sarabi and he was so good with the kittens - but we live in a one bedroom and it's a lot to ask of someone who's never done this before - or even really considered the idea of "temporary" (ie foster) animals. Losing Dinah was so tough for him. I think it's doubly hard because I do all the administrative/transportation stuff - one day the kittens show up, he loves them for 8-10 weeks, and then another day they're just gone.

I've told the shelter that I'll take some short-term adults right now. Our city shelter was privatized last week and the private rescue I've been working with recently took in 20 adults to help deal with the transition, a few of whom just need a few days of care before they're ready for the cat room. Hopefully he can deal with the adults because they're less heart-melting and they'll only be around for a short time. Plus, there's a few deaf cats and they're DESPERATE for someone with deaf pet experience, which I have in spades. He's very passive/willing to let me take in as many/much as I want, but I know it's so much to ask of him. Since he's really unwilling to draw a line, where should I draw it?

This got a little E/N-ey but I figured PI regulars would have to have some experience helping their loved ones adjust to foster situations.

Edit: I know Criscodisco just gave a few barn kittens up for adoption, maybe he can tell me how he helped his boyfriend deal with it? (Also: Crisco!!!!!! I'm dying here without updates! I need youuuuuu)

Oh god these new adult fosters are a nightmare. I picked them up from a family in section 8 housing. She had seven cats (left after another private shelter took a few they were willing to take) in a two bedroom with three people and no income. The place reeked of cigarette smoke, nag champa and cat piss. One of these cats has never defecated in a litter box - he pees in it but they just let him poo poo in the tub. To get the cats into the carriers the husband put on gloves and wrestled them into them, and both cats were traumatized tantrum machines when they were done.

They've had a few hours to chill out but they're both still stressed as gently caress. They're way too freaked out to eat so I can't get them to accept treats. They've both grudgingly accepted being pet, and after some chill time, being carried to isolation (#1 busted out of isolation in a way I thought totally impossible - fixed now, and went rampaging through the house, sobbing and hissing and lashing out).

The rescue was looking for a quick turnaround on these guys but it'll be a long rehab period. They both have tartar and mites, only saw a vet to get fixed six years ago (and it was a low-cost with probably no real exam). They're also both fat as gently caress and one of them has scabs from some kind of flea or food allergy, or from stress grooming, I don't know which.

Neither of them seems to enjoy human contact. Petting is tolerated but doesn't interest them. I have no idea how to fix that. Some people, Christ.

gently caress it, I'm making Cat Food.

Also, I haven't seen my fosters eat or drink anything at all yet, and they've been here 48 hours. They're passing both the skin and gums dehydration tests though, and the vet didn't see any signs of dehydration when he looked at the sad one this morning, so I guess Cats Will Be Cats? I gave them four different flavours of wellness, and then when I decided maybe they didn't know what to do with wellness I went to what they were eating before (Purina One :barf:) and some Friskies in case they needed crap in order to eat. No visible luck yet but I guess they must be drinking water while I'm not looking? I guess I'll try some tuna...

The attention thing is definitely where I most strongly considered using the collar, but she is very good about 'checking in' frequently. I still do toss around the idea of using the collar to refine the attention thing, just haven't had the need enough that I've done it I guess.

It's interesting to hear how different animals adjust to deafness. My last foster cat was deaf and his response was to stay away from people. If you upset him he'd shove his face into a corner and then you didn't exist. On the other hand, I had a deaf horse who seemed very sensitive to vibration and touch and never had any problems getting around or sensing you. I wonder if it's a predator/prey thing.

I am confused. Are you saying there should be a glottal stop in there? I thought it was a palatal sound, and maybe even a fricative in the German. I can't make it sound normal with a glottal stop in English. I think most people pronounce it with the voiceless velar /k/, it becomes /ts/ because the /k/ assimilates to the place of the next sound (the alveolar fricative /s/) making it sound more like /ts/ than /ks/ (what actually happens is sort of somewhere in between but it gets complicated fast). Listeners misperceive and pass the wrong pronunciation to others. It's pretty standard place assimilation though.

Regarding the "orange cat = male cat" thing, I had this conversation a few months ago with a batshit hippie catlady woman who came to adopt one of my foster kittens.

:byodame: : what a handsome Tom cat you have there!
:) : actually she's a girl! Her name is Sarabi.
:byodame: : but he's orange!
:) : yeah, she's sort of unusual I guess!
:byodame: : are you sure he's a girl? He can't be! He's so aggressive!
 : (Sab is at this point meowing incessantly in between purrs and rubbing up against this woman's legs the way she does when literally anyone walks through any door). Aggressive? She's just vocal and friendly.
:byodame: : I have a girl cat at home and she would never be this forward! I assure you this cat is a male and you should have a vet confirm that.
:) : Ma'am I watched this cat give birth with my own eyes, I think I'm sure on this one.

She kept on insisting that Sab "couldn't be" a girl because she was "so aggressive" (still just purring and asking for pets) until I dug up my catbirth pictures, which shut her up.

She wanted to adopt the foster kitten because she had an 18 year old cat in CRF whose companions had passed away in the last year. I told her that adding a kitten might be extraordinarily stressful to her older cat and she said, "no, it's okay, I talked to Jasmine and she told me it would be okay."

She returned the kitten, heartbroken, three weeks later because the geriatric one freaked out and started peeing everywhere.

Super I want you to promise that even once you are free and moved out you will take a few pictures of Gumbo as he ages. As not a dog person, I have no idea what he's going to look like. I don't see any bulldog in there at all except maybe in the feet? He has a really hound face, I guess, I don't know. He confuses me. How tall is he going to be? How heavy? Mutts, man.

Unrelatedly, I managed to convince my rescue not to euth one of my old fosters but it's going to continue to be a battle and honestly they might not be wrong. Nobody will ever want him. :(

I liked him a lot. He's a 6 yo deaf DSH who kicks his litter literally everywhere and needs 8 weeks of hiding before he wants to come talk to you ever. Eventually he gets lovey though, if you are consistent about patiently and affectionately invading his space. He also hisses every time he sees you, but it's sort of just in a loving way, I think he's just bad at making sounds.

I really don't feel that bad, because actually my childhood cats were declawed when I was old enough to remember and I felt the same way..."Yay, no more clawing or pricking us with the claws when they're kneading!" I really think most people don't know what it means to declaw a cat. I know for a fact my family didn't, and my parents both regret doing so even though we had a "good" result with no behavior problems.

And honestly, I'm not 100% against declawing. In my area, where nice cats are a dime a dozen, I would rather see someone declaw their cat than drop it off at the shelter to probably be euthanized. However, I think that's a last resort. I have a problem clawer and we've tried 4 different tactics to keep him from tearing up the furniture...a particular type of scratching post rubbed with catnip every few days is the key, but he has all 4 sets of claws and uses them happily...and appropriately! But in situations where the problems just can't be fixed, I'd rather a cat be declawed than put down...but personally I'd also rather suffer a physical disability than die, so that's not saying much. It should be a last resort, IMO.

The answer to those problems is softpaws, not invasive surgery. They ship anywhere! And Petsmart carries them, so even in rural areas they are an easy fix to serious scratching issues. I wish more vets carried them and offered to put them on with nail trims or something to help with scratching problems.

Ok guys, had a seriously traumatic moment last night. I don't know if it's truly the right place to post this but I ultimately felt violated as a pet owner by the whole ordeal. I was going to Target to pick up a few odds and ends for my cat, incidentally, and as I'm pulling in I find myself behind a car with bumper stickers at the traffic light. Several are pet themed - he's got the classic round "WOOF" sticker, and an "I :h: MY DOG". There's also a prominent "YES ON 1" sticker - for the non-Mainers, this refers to voting "Yes" on Question 1 of last months referendum vote, which was whether to legalize gay marriage or not. "Yes" meaning that you support gay marriage. A Yes on 1 bumper sticker is sort of a subtle and somewhat noncommital way of putting a rainbow sticker on your car while also stating that you give a poo poo to some degree, and since we won it's nice to keep it there for a bit. If I were the sort of person who put bumper stickers on my car that's one I'd have.

I can see the driver is a guy, and surprisingly he's sort of cute. And I'm thinking, "Huh, he loves his dog, is both gay and politically aware... wonder if he's single..." And that is when I notice his custom license plate, which for some ungodly reason I neglected to read first. In big capital letters, sandwiched directly between the "I :h: MY DOG" sticker and the "WOOF" sticker, the license plate reads... "YIFF ME". :gonk:

So the answer to your question is that "yes", technically by puny human standards he's "single", but that the dog part of his soul is in a committed relationship. Sorry bro.

I caught a mouse today because my cat is actually, seriously broken. How could she be that stupid?

Okay quick backstory: I have been housesitting for my parents who retired right around the same time I graduated college in early September. They went on a series of trips and I watched their animals and house while they've been gone. They just got back recently and have been watching Sarabi while I've been lining up a job/apartment for after Christmas. They live in a giant sprawling house on 60 worthless rural acres. It is lovely out here. ANYWAY the rains have started and I found my first mouse inside the house. Well, actually Sarabi found it, last night. She had it cornered in my bathroom where it was undoubtedly going after the cat food. I told her she was a good cat, ducked out for a minute, and when I came back she (unsurprisingly) had lost the mouse but was staring intently at one corner of the cabinet where I assumed There Was A Mouse. She stayed there for HOURS. I left and came back hours later and she was still there, and didn't come to bed until late because she was watching the (apparently mouseless) corner. "Good cat," I thought.

This morning, I grabbed my pair of chop-wood-and-work-outside jeans that were lying on the floor because I'm a horrible slob and shook them out and stuck my foot in there and what comes falling out of the leg but Our Mouse Friend. Note: bedroom and bathroom are connected but not that close to each other; Sarabi totally missed the mouse taking off somewhere. "Dumb cat," I thought, "She must have gotten distracted." I call her down from her bed and she gets pretty psyched and starts poking the mouse, which runs for a few feet and then stops moving. Sarabi gets distracted and loses track of the mouse. I'm staring from mouse to cat trying to get her to realize it's still there, literally just sitting terrified inches from me. She finally sees it, pokes it again, and the process repeats. Eventually the mouse sort of acts like it's going to try to bite her, she freaks out and runs off up her cat tree. I wrap the mouse in a sweatshirt so I don't get Mouse Herpes or whatever stupid diseases they carry and dump it outside while Sabrab eats kibble.

Jesus loving Christ. I felt sort of bad for the mouse, to be hunted by something so inept. I probably should have killed it, I know it'll just come right back in but it was pretty cute and I was worried about not being able to do it in one blow.

HOW IS SHE SO BAD THOUGH I MEAN she just kept losing track of it! It was right there the whole time! Maybe I should get her eyes checked, because drat.

My Aunt Larou sewed this horrible clown wall hanging to go in my room when I was a baby, it was like this weird partially stuffed kinda flat doll clown thing, I dunno. It hung opposite my crib and stared at the floor and it terrified me. It terrified me when I was too little to verbalize what I was afraid of and then once I got to the point where I could express "that loving clown is terrifying" through pointing and yelling "NO BAD THAT!!" they refused to take it down because it would hurt my Aunt's feelings so I had to live with that loving clown until we moved house when I was like four and I still do not like clowns. :(

I totally read this as Aunt Beru, and I'm really sorry about what happened to her and Uncle Owen on the moisture farm. :( That must have been awful.

Leroy, the dog I've been on-and-off dogsitting for 5 months, is embarrassingly untrained. Especially since I haven't been very busy and should have clicker trained him while his owners were gone.

He stole a hot dog today. I caught him and he felt too guilty to eat it in front of me, but it was too valuable to relinquish.

:catstare: LEROY DROP THAT HOT DOG

I DIDN'T SAY "DOWN", I SAID DROP THE HOT DOG.

SERIOUSLY DON'T RUN AWAY JUST GIVE ME THE HOT DOG DAMNIT

It ended about how you would expect it to.

I know you're short on time but is this maybe the type of thing where you could rehome privately, among friends, family or (worst come to worst) something like Craigslist?

If not, don't worry so much. There's worse things than a no-kill shelter, and if he has the right temperament it can even be Cat Paradise. That's way better than being the short-lived focus of Moses Angst. (I know he is a pretty good ratcatcher but in my head every victim of Moses gets treated to a long angsty monologue and a bunch of :qq: before they die, like he's some sort of terrible tragic villain)
