I DMed a very material-precious campaign once and forced the magic user to keep very close track of her tiny bells, small scraps of paper, bits of herb, feathers and basilisk scales and poo poo. It was kind of fun making her kneel on the forest floor and describe what she was doing with her alchemical crap, it lent a lot of flavor to the scenario The most fun was forcing them to hunt a very spry deer after none of them had packed provisions. I warned those fuckers I wasn't handwaving and I didn't

IIRC beer and wine were among the first cuneiform symbols, and keeping track of workers' beer rations was the content of some of the earliest tablets. "Alright, Ur, you get your beer?" "Yep!" "Check. How about you, Uru?" "Yeah, got it." "And check. Got your beer, Ur-ur?" "You know it, boss." "Love to hear it. Check. How about the Uruk brothers, Urham and Urhamsi?" "We got, and we drank it!" I took a museums and collections course which visited the archives of a local science museum. The archivist was talking about how the local tribes were constantly petitioning them to give poo poo back and they kept coming up with reasons to keep it. She was clearly trying to be respectful of their claim but, uh, came across as being pretty loving bitter about giving up anything in their collection. Struck me as a tense scenario.
