I saw that you could combine similar types and assumed that was all you can do, barring respecs or unslotters. Don't feel bad, I thought it was the same way when I first started playing. I actually deleted a 12ish character because I thought I was locked into TOs forever. The prompt that pops up is kinda misleading. If I wasn't coming back after a stint after Beta I would have been confused about overriding enhancement slots too. It was either this or Champions and this has a far better train wreck quotient now. First character out of the chute is the Zoo Master: Here to cage or destroy this furred menace! (Beast mastermind for whatever insult I can wring from it) I think the last I played from Beta to expansion #10 or something, I almost wish I had my old account w/characters but I'm finding going in from level 1 is helping me catch up on all this extra junk. I'll get my handle up when I have time to join up later in the week. (And when I find my handle I'm feeling kinda dumb)

Yeah, if I used those unslotters I'd look even more stupid. Thankfully I am half poor so it's alright, and I'm glad I'm not the only one that screwed that up first time through. By the way, I hit accept for the chat invitation and I can't join yet, I'm a free player. I'll be subbed in a few days, can I ask for a invite again this weekend? edit: Yo Smuggins, go to menu and select 'chat handle' near the bottom of the list if that's what you're asking. I think it's the name of the first character on your account by default, but you can change it once.

^^^ Figured. I loaded this up late and only got 30 mins in so I figured I'd get it some time, only took 30 mins to decide to become VIP though. drat cheap fun. Thanks for the assist! Well if it's my first character then it's @Zoo Master And I see no valid reason I should ever change it for a long time.

Well count me in for giving the free to play a shot. Needed something different to play, plus not having to pay is good enough for me. Edit: Is there a power set I should look at starting out, or ones to avoid? WhiteBoyShuffle fucked around with this message at 01:36 on Jun 12, 2012 |

There aren't any bad archetypes, although you shouldn't be a defender if you don't like teaming. As for powersets, everyone has their own opinions, but IMHO. Mastermind/Beast Mastery is the only set in the game that flat-out sucks donkey balls. As a free player, you won't need to worry about that. The only thing to watch out for is to avoid pairing two powersets that both use a lot of end. For example, making a Broadsword/Invulnerability scrap is probably a bad idea.

Also note that when people say "suck" here is that they do not have the biggest numbers. The "good" power sets are pretty much overpowered when we're using other MMOG's standards. The rest are mediocre with very few notable ones being below par, as in you won't feel like a mini-god wrecking poo poo all over. Most folks who are not Tommy would pick a power they find to be "cool" or just pick powers for a character concept. Really, the main draw of this game is making characters and having fun with the concept, like running around with a Titan Weapon Brute looking like Tyrael, or an Electric Melee Scrapper based on a super obscure terriblr 1980s Indonesian superhero. Even Beast Mastermind works if you just want to run around with a pack of dogs. As long as you don't mind everyone else being more useful than you. You won't get treated like a leper, like a bad class in other games.

catsuit judo posted:I know I'll want to respec either build slot again by the early-mid 20s to use single origin enhancements, so is it more efficient to just do the team missions for the free tokens or buy some in the store? I'd recommend, given it's your first time, download Mid's Character designer and just play around for a bit to see what's available in the long-run, or just play it as it goes. Anyway long story short, you don't really need to respec your character often, we all make mistakes and this is your first time - but you only get 3 trial respecs (I think) and you don't want to have to pay for another, or use a respec recipe for money. Don't use em all up now! May as well use it when you're sure you'll be happy with the build for a while. You should be able to get much higher on whatever build you're currently using. FYI, I usually use the second build when I reach 50, so I don't have to worry about respeccing the first one, as you'll almost always want different enhancement placement as you're leveling up, and sometimes even use different skills, maybe you've realized they're not that great in the end. Edit: And, by the way, if you haven't figured it out.. DOs are 2x as powerful as TOs, and SOs are 2x as powerful as DOs. They increase in effectiveness depending on your relative level compared to them, up to +3 and down to -3, independent of the level of the enhancements. Running task forces isn't a bad idea if you've just slotted a shiny new round of enhancements at levels 17, 22, etc. Accolade powers are nice to build as you're leveling, as they grant you permanent bonuses to your character! If you know where you're going to put slots, also consider walking out of the store with a couple extra enhancements in your tray. CoH is particularly bad about attracting people like that, assuming that there's some elusive powerset combination that nobody has thought of yet that's an invincible wrecking ball. All in all, most sets have their pros and cons, but some are certainly underperformers, even sets that used to be great. You can just do so much with IOs now, a lot of what people used to love is just not as useful anymore. Tom Powers fucked around with this message at 06:01 on Jun 12, 2012 |

The game is not balanced around IOs, itrials are made with the assumption that most people will be using IOs but ATs and skill combos arent balanced around them nor is 98% of the content in the game, so saying with enough IOs x is equal to y maybe true but its kind of silly. The game is super easy no matter how you choose to play so just have fun and dont hate on how someone else chooses to play, unless they choose to play peacebringers or masterminds. Dont hate on goons that sperge out over multi billion influence IO builds, for the most part the people that are doing that are people that have been playing for years and have little else left to do but to try and make super efficient killing machines. GoGoGadgetChris posted:I see a lot of kheldian hate, but what's the word on Widows and Fortunatas? I don't really see many of them. Fortunatas are weird. Main thing that sucks is they are seriously starved for slots, completely unlike Night Widows. The psi blasts have horrible animation times but the melee attacks all redraw. I think you're better off meleeing for damage anyway. Mind Link has a longer cooldown than the Night Widow version. They get a lot of long-cooldown AOE controls and a mag 4 ranged stun which insta-stuns pretty much any boss that isn't a robot, tank, or mez resistant. Overall, they're OK, and dual-spec lets you have both on the same character so why not. Also Mask Presence is only a 40ft stealth and mobs have 60ft of perception unless you smokebomb them so you might want to slot a stealth IO somewhere (I put one in Combat Jumping because a slot was worth never having to remember to toggle Sprint). e: Okay no resists isn't entirely accurate, they have a fuckload of psi resist (20% from Foresight, 10% from Indominatable Will, 30% from Mind Link), and that's it. Ive never had in the last whats it been like 4 or 5 years since we had to schedule STFs around lumberjerks schedule because they required a stone tank? anyway.. I havent had anyone say "drat this content is so hard, we better kick these less than optimal builds so we can get more powergamers in here". It was more a shot at the guy above my previous post that suggested scrutinizing over the best builds for stuff was somehow childish. Some people like to play and argue that peacebringers bring more to a team then frustration, some people like to spend more time in mids than they do leveling their characters, what. ever.

In my opinion, the only time rating powers matter is if it's on a set you plan to spend money/points on. If they release something like Candy Blast or whatever (or maybe DOUBLE DUAL PISTOLS) it's helpful to know that despite sounding cool this powerset is really mediocre and kind of painful to play. I have a Spines/Regen Stalker from when CoV first launched so if it's more painful than that it's worth noting.

I didn't take the Mag 4 stun because it had a 3 second animation time, but the animation times for most other powers aren't bad. No resists except Psi, but it's easy to have softcapped defense. Widows are like Stalkers with less ST damage, but more AoE damage and some buffs.
