Did my first track event a few weeks back at CMP. 95 Miata with HP+ in front, HPS in rear, a dot 4 fluid flush and crappy street rubber. I had so much more fun than autocross. If you are at all on the fence about track events go.
Heres a crappy video of my crappy runs.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F6fzZJX944g
Also to add to what the OP said about cars you need. I rode with a guy at the same event driving a ford escort zx2 base model with hawk pads and all season tires. He did have sway bars, but that was it. He was chasing down a Turbo RS and a GT3 in the corners, the porsches also had racing slicks.

That said im looking at a roll bar for the miata now. Any one have opinions about which to go for? I was thinking a Hard Dog M1 hard top with x brace.

Sadi did a track day with this level of factory protection.

I was running a borrowed hard top, which for some reason made it ok to them. I personally wasn't super comfortable with it. I dont think the hard top would provide any roll over protection what so ever.

Got my second day in at CMP the day before the lemons race there. Things got a little screwed up and I ended up only getting 40min on track but my feelings werent too hurt. I had a blast. I couldn't believe how good the RS3s were on the track. They were making my HP+s work for it. I still have problems with T3 and T14. Did get the kink flat though, that was fun.
Heres an example of a bad lap with my only real screw up of the day. (T3 almost spin).

And heres one of my better laps.

What are you using for telemetry there?

Harry's laptimer pro, Its probably the best $20 i've spent on any iPhone app. It gives you a lot of data you can export. It can do those overlays. I still havent explored all the options.

Does it let you record for a long time - like an entire 30 minute track session, for example? I have a similar app (optrix videopro) and it can't process long videos.

Nice save on that first video like your instructor said. Other than that you could probably use more of the track but that's a pretty easy thing to fix.

It auto starts recording video when you start lapping. It records the whole time but automatically divides the video up in to one lap segments. It also lets you compare telemetry from lap to lap. If you have a wifi OBD2 sender it shows ever more data. I have had the optrix video app before this. In my opinion the optix app is fine for autocross, but lap timer pro is miles ahead for track stuff. Timer pro can even do some cool stuff, like you can load gopro video into it and let it process and add the overlay to it. Or you could just export the telemetry data and do the overlay on an external program. Its a much more in depth app than oprix.

Just did one last weekend at CMP East track. Was fun, instructor offered to solo certify me, I told him Id like to get a few more DE events under my belt first (this was my 3rd event).

A friend has issues with his car. He was told the brakes he bought could hold up, but in 1 25min session they (last run of the day) they went from 50% tread life to metal on metal. Pulling off the track he also had a axle seal pop out and drain the transmission. We had a fun evening putting it back together and limping it back home.

So looking to do suspension on the miata next year.
Im looking at Koni Race with GC coil overs and 700/450 springs.
In the same price range are PSS9s and FM V-Maxx XXtreme coilovers. Also FCMs are about 30% more. Goals are set up aiming towards track driving.
What are opensions, is it worth waiting and saving for the FCMs? Or should I consider the VMaxes or PSS9s over the Koni Race set up? I tried looking on m.net but its m.net.

Save for Xida CS. Just save your money.

Buy something used from miataturbo if need be.

I assume you are talking about the "Club Sport" not the "Coilover system" right? Because I could see saving for the Club Sport, how ever holy balls the coilover system is expensive. More than I paid for my car.

My personal interest is to have fun and get into wheel to wheel cheap. One of my friends going in with us really wants to win. Im pretty un decided still. I want rear wheel drive, because its what I know. Seems like the real right choice for reliable cheap fast rwd is e30 or maita.

Zamp becuase it was cheap, SA2010 and fit. I like it so far, no issues for autocross or HPDE.

e30 318s seem super cheap to run as well. I was talking to a guy at a track day. It wasnt super fast but it was light and good on the track. His motor had over 250k miles on it with years of wheel to wheel events and had yet to be rebuilt. He had very very few issues with it. Other than it being a slightly slow option it seemed very attractive to me from the maintenance point of view.

I'm running hawk HP+. As for the track, I was at shannonville motorsports park in Ontario. We ran the long track configuration, it was awesome.

I'm also getting some strange noises from the right rear, something is making a grindingish noise when not braking with every wheel revolution, and it doesn't sound right under braking either. Will pull that apart tonight and see what's going on. It wasn't making noises like that before the trackday...

On HP+s I had bad vibrations in some conditions. Normally it was on the street that I had it though.

Have you run the DTCs before? How do you like them? Most people I know down here run carbotechs so I was looking at them for my next pads.

So another question, do you bias your pads? A few friends run XP-10s front and XP-8s rear but Im not sure I want to bias the front any more than it already is.

I know Phone spends a lot of time at VIR and I'm sure others here do. What's the opinion on Rezoom HPDE events? I think I want to get my miata up there for their march 7th event.

I haven't heard of them. You should run the next month with THSCC on North course.

The March event is only 1 day but it's full corse and only $250. Price is my primary motivator. Though $450 for two days isn't bad.

I found 2 cans of it still sealed at a good will the other day for $2.50. I was super stoked. But yes, I think they do still have it in yellow and Ive been old they sell blue in an "off road use only" can, but I haven't checked.

I'm a big proponent of learning on good tires like RS-3s/Rivals/etc. Not R-comps, mind you, but I didn't start getting faster until I took off my Super Sports and put on RS-3s. It may have just been those tires, but compared to the RS-3s, the breakaway and communication was abysmal. For someone learning, this meant when I exceeded the limit a bit, the car was sideways. On the RS3s, the car slid a bit, I learned a lesson, and could keep going.

I would agree. The first event I want to was on all seasons. It was terrifying. The car was so much more controllable and fun to drive on good tires. I had a lot more confidence with good tires.

If you're just looking to do parade laps, then do whatever.

If you want a fast street tire, buy Rivals or Z2s. If you want an entry level slick, NT01s or Maxxis RC-1s.

Or RS3s they won most of autocross nationals this year.

You know you can spray your door with some windex/simple green and it'll clean that stuff off, right? Or are your cars that fast.

Also don't clean the poo poo out of your car before. I had my car so clean that I couldn't get painters tape to stick at all. Trying to dewax with isopropyl helped a little but it still blew off at low speed.

I have a 2010 ZAMP. I like it pretty well for a discount helmet. The foam sealing around the visor is falling apart on mine now. I can t complain for the money. Through my next helmet will have a removable liner so I can wash it after rallycross.

Does anyone have a favorite street pad that stands up to mountain driving? I have stock pads on my Civic Si and faded them to hell. I’ve had the HPS and HP+ on my Miata in the past and liked neither. The HPS didn’t feel like it had the modulation of the OEM pads or much higher of a temp tolerance, and the HP+ was dusty, loud, and only lasted like two track days.

For sure. I’ve tried the street track combo pad game before. It was always a bad idea.
