New unit DLC. It has a bunch of units which only came with certain retailers, and also two new ones. It doesn't have any of the Imperial Edition units, which is a shame. Anyway this might get me to finally finish my Russian campaign. Anyone who thinks Britain is too easy in that game should try Russia.

VVV Huh, "Heroes of the Napoleonic Wars" is on Steam but it's not listed as DLC for Napoleon. I always thought it was weird they released some unit DLC but apparently held those back. Anyway, thanks!

A couple of months ago I got into Europa Barborum and it's AMAZING.
Incidentally, does anyone know what the school chain of buildings in Rome (and EB) actually do? The flavour text sort of suggests it makes your family members smarter, but it's unclear.

They've said that the map will be populated by lots of little single-territory factions (like Shogun, in the beginning), as opposed to the old "Rebel" faction. I'd say it's almost certain the 8 factions thing refers to playable factions.

At the moment I'd say the givens are Rome, Carthage, the Seleucid Empire, some sort of Greek faction, Gauls (Arverni?), and Ptolemaic Egypt. I guess the other two will be one Western barbarian faction, and one Eastern nomad faction. Eight seems a bit small, but Napoleon had only 5 factions and it turned out great.

Okay so I bought RotS as soon as it came out but have only just gotten around to playing it. Is it normal, for your "sister family" to declare war on you? I know it's meant to happen after Realm divide, but in this game (playing as one of the Fujiwaras) it happened on like turn ten. I think the reason may have been that I took two towns and boxed them in (even though we had military access). The diplomacy screen claimed that relations had collapsed due to "past grievances"; over the course of about three turns they cancelled the alliance, ended trade, and declared war.

Are there any mods that change the unit cards in Shogun 2? As in, colour-code them, so it's easier to tell what kind of unit each one is? There were a couple of mods like that when the game first came out, but I can't find any that have been updated recently.

I'm genuinely surprised. Britain always felt like a backwater when I played Rome, it seems odd to "spend" a whole faction on it.

Anyway, the last four:
-Seleucids
-Egyptian faction
-Gauls (Arverni?)
-Some nomadic Eastern faction, I guess. Parthia.

A general S2 question:

Is it meant to be possible for vassals to declare war on you? I know it happens inevitably after realm divide, but these were vassals I created after it started. What happened was, one of my vassals (the only one I had created before RD) declared war on me, as I expected. In that same turn, every other faction declared war on me, including the four or five new clans I had just created. Is this a scripted event, or did the one vassal just set off a chain reaction? (due to the diplomacy hit)

The best city destruction was in Medieval 2. The Mongol Rocket Launchers would crap out dozens of little missiles, and every single one would smash a little piece of building. They were totally useless for destroying gates and walls and stuff, but otherwise it was very appropriate for the Mongols.

Get money. Trade with absolutely everyone, upgrade your roads, upgrade economy buildings.
Also, use lots of cannons. Every army (once your economy can sustain full stacks) should have 4-5 units of artillery in it.

FotS is a lot of fun, if you know what you're doing. As a TW game it's pretty broken: all the units are glass cannons, and the AI just can't use them effectively. You should play the vanilla Shogun 2 first, get FotS if you feel like a victory lap.

Crosspost from video games deal megathread.

I've never played the series before, and am a total dummy. I'm fairly certain that I'll love it, as I enjoy similar games including ones inferior in every way (like Commander: Conquest of the Americas :saddowns:)
Great coupon codes and deal on Greenman Gaming today.
There's an $18 Master pack here or a $33 Grandmaster pack here

Is the extra content in the Grandmaster pack worth the extra $15? Where should I start playing, being new to the series?

I (and most people in this thread, probably) started playing with the original Rome. The game has a few issues, and it's pretty boring to play as anyone who isn't the Romans, but it still holds up well. You won't be annoyed by the clunky interface unless you've played one of the later games. There are a bunch of total conversion mods which are all worth playing, too. I haven't played either expansion, but I've heard they're decent.
-Medieval II doesn't really add a whole bunch; the factions are less varied and there's a lot of not very good additions, like a pope who hates you, and lots of dull busywork with agents. Play it if you like the setting, I guess. The expansion, Kingdoms, adds four new campaigns of varying quality, and it's required to get any of the good mods.
-Empire was a huge letdown when it came out. It was buggy, and the AI was hopeless. All the factions were the same, and there was no need to train anything except for infantry. Since then it's been patched substantially, and has become alright. It's very difficult to mod. Some people say they enjoy the scale of it; honestly, I think you can skip it and go straight to...
-Napoleon started off as an expansion to Empire and ended up becoming its own thing. It's a substantial improvement over Empire; the campaigns are more tightly focused, there's a little more variation in the factions, and it's actually worth using non-infantry. Again, modders can only make minor changes. The Peninsular Campaign (DLC) is good fun, although very different from normal campaigns. The unit DLC is good, I guess, if you already really like the game.
-Shogun II was actually really great on release. There are two major pieces of DLC, Rise of the Samurai and Fall of the Samurai, which add new campaigns, factions, tech trees, units, etc. and are both worth getting. There are a bunch of unit and faction DLC, which are not at all necessary unless you like the sound of playing as those factions.
-Total War Battles is a phone game ported to PC. It's not very good.
-No idea about Viking: Battle for Asgard.

I've been going over the faction descriptions for Rome II and it's occurred to me that many of the factions get a bonus when fighting their own culture type. I think the idea is to push those factions (when they're being played by the AI) towards dominance of their own regions. So, it encourages Macedonia to end up as the dominant power in Greece, without making it completely impossible that some minor faction will end up in charge. The game is biased towards historical accuracy, unlike in Shogun 2 where "major clans" would drop like flies.

Samurai units are armoured, and so will take fewer losses from arrow fire. If you shoot at unarmoured targets, you'll kill more enemy soldiers. You should prioritise valuable vulnerable units, i.e. warrior monks, generals, matchlock ashigaru. If you concentrate all your fire (3-4 unit's worth) onto 1 unit, you should be able to rout it before it can reach your lines. Also, a concentrated volley can (with a bit of luck) completely blunt a cavalry charge.

Guns completely ignore armour, so you should focus on armoured high-value targets with them.

The Pontus writeup says that "eastern cultural influence" leads to reduced public order. I guess this means they're using some sort of culture-group type thing, like religion in earlier games.

I think the playable factions will all be nicely varied, and the others will be pretty similar to the playable factions. Except for major factions like Thrace, the Seleucids, Epirus etc. which will probably end up playable anyway.
If nothing else, the fact that they've made a big deal out of revealing each faction shows they want the game to be diverse. I didn't really pay attention to the first game before it came out but I got the impression the marketing was all ROME ROME ROME LEGIONS.

VVVVV I don't see why not. For Rome II they give you a CD Key to enter into Steam, it's not locked to any one person until you do that.

Just a heads-up, WoodrowSkillson: it's really, really difficult to get through the whole tech tree in one game. You need to decide fairly early which paths you'll focus on. I generally try to get all the farm upgrades, and fire arrows as soon as possible.

The army stuff seems pretty new to me! And also a great idea; building distinctive specialised armies is basically what I do already, so having the game take that into account is nice.

I wish he'd been a little more clear on province management. What happens when you only control part of a province? What if the enemy takes the capital but nothing else?

Trade with everyone you can, 100% of the time.
Before you start a campaign, you should mess around with custom battles for a while, to get an idea of how valuable units are and what you can do with them.
High taxes get you more money, but low taxes will cause your populations to expand quickly and unlock new building slots, which you can them turn towards revenue.

I recall them mentioning Stonehenge as a wonder, which suggests that there will be quite a few more than the seven canonical wonders.

Also I tried out the PlanetWar mod for Medieval 2. It's okay, not fantastic. The map is absolutely huge, and large parts of it are covered in forest, which means that a large proportion of your battles will be fought in those godawful forest maps where you can't see the enemy troops or even your own. Someone asked the modder about it in TWC and he just said he liked the feeling of fighting in a mysterious, wild land. Fighting for the glory of the smurf empire is novel and all, but actually playing the campaign just isn't that engaging.

Also, because the map is so big and there are so many trees, the campaign map runs poorly.

Yeah IIRC that's right, Otomo don't really get matchlock ashi any earlier, they're just a bit better than most others. I think Otomo's clan advantage is generally pretty poor, but it's made up for by the great start location.

Are you playing the base game, or Fall of the Samurai? In the base game, all the other factions--even your vassals and loyal allies--will inevitably declare war on you after Realm Divide starts. There is no reason to create vassals, ever. (Actually, vassals established after Realm Divide are generally pretty good).

If you're playing FotS, your vassals/allies will be sealed into an unbreakable alliance once Realm Divide starts. Honestly, the FotS system is so much better I'm amazed they didn't retrofit it into the basic game.

The best battle I ever had in Napoleon was taking Corsica (of all places) from the Ottomans. I was Russia and it was their last territory left on the map, and I was sick of dealing with their bullshit so I just sent one of my 15 armies there to take it. They had an army full of sword units and missile cav, so I decided to actually play the battle, just to relax. My unicorn guns smashed a whole in the corner of the fort and I charged in with almost my entire force. I also forgot to tell the artillery to stop firing at the enemy. At the end of the battle I'd lost about 800 troops, while the Ottomans only had about 200 kills.

Seriously though, if you play as Russia in that game your armies kind of suck a bit, so if you want to reliably win an autoresolve battle against an enemy stack (and the enemy is capable of building proper armies in that game), it encourages you to maintain these teams or packs of multiple stacks working together. It's awesome. I know the game may seem limited (it is) or the diplomacy unusually broken (it is), but the way it's set up between France and everyone else guarantees the game will always be challenging. The AI can genuinely take over the map if you let it, and the player really has to fight for every inch. Also the siege battles turn into normal battles unless the town in question has a fort built, which they generally don't, so there's that.

Another nice thing about Napoleon is it has a sort of soft Realm Divide. Either you're France vs the world, or you're a Coalition nation trying to survive the French onslaught. The AI produces full stacks with an actually decent army composition, and sometimes even uses multiple stacks in conjunction with each other. Also, in my opinion it has the best artillery of any TW game. The arty is enough to kill troops and force the enemy to move towards you (and generally has a more satisfying feel to it than the Empire artillery did), but isn't strong enough to win battles by itself (like the FotS artillery). The diplomatic AI is occasionally moronic (I once gave northern Italy to Britain as a gift, in the hopes it would cause them to go to war with France; instead they declared war on me), but it's no worse than any other game in the series.

Medieval II stuff:
-You probably shouldn't bother with Crusades. If you do, you should give the territory away afterwards, unless you're already in the neighbourhood.
-Definitely don't bother with merchants. There are certain tips and tricks to making good ones and keeping the AI away, but it's just such a pain. Maybe you can get away with it as England (once the Scots are gone); I'm pretty sure the AI couldn't do naval invasions in M2.
-Cav need a good long straight runup in order to actually pull off a charge.
-If you make a million priests and just charge them off into heathen territory, the Pope will love you. You can stack the College of Cardinals in your favour, and win the papacy that way.
-Either go full Dread, or full Chivalry (on a character-by-character basis). You don't start to get really cool bonuses until the higher levels.
-Stainless Steel and Broken Crescent are probably the most popular mods. The LotR mod ("The Third Age") is pretty decent. "Europa Barborum" was a prominent Rome I mod that recently got a sequel on Medieval II, I haven't tried it out but the first one was quite good IMO. Almost all the good mods require the Kingdoms expansion (which is generally solid).

When I played as the Otomo, I completely took over Kyushu, then a little bit of Honshu. I spent a while building up, and then stormed into Shikuko and just BARELY fell short of triggering Realm Divide. I suggest you wrap up both the small islands before going into the slog of realm divide.
You don't really ever need to buy those Portuguese Land Clearances, they seem like more trouble than they're worth.
Portuguese Tercos are an absolute game-changer, start fielding them at the earliest opportunity.

In my Russia campaign, I gave northern Italy to the Brits as a gift, hoping that sharing a border with France would get them back in the fight; they'd peaced out dozens of turns ago, in spite of suffering no defeats or invasions at all.

A few turns later they declared war on me, and lost super loving hard. Prussia also betrayed me out of nowhere, due to expansion diplo penalties, and were completely overrun by my 10-odd stacks across Germany. Oh, it was the best.

On the plus side, the AI in that game was quite good at setting up multi-stack battles.
