Anyone know anything about importing phones from China to use with Bell? I just saw this: http://www.samsung.com/cn/consumer/mobile-phones/mobile-phones/smart-phone/SCH-W789XDACTC?subsubtype=android and now I'm wondering about the feasibility of bringing that here and using it. I don't think they plan to release it in North America. There's also the "Golden" which seems comically large, but so do a lot of modern smartphones to me, so maybe I'm just getting old. http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,2817,2423421,00.asp edit: VVV - Awww, I saw the CDMA and just assumed there'd be a way. Well thanks for the answer. odiv fucked around with this message at 01:14 on Aug 24, 2013 |

So there was a little bit of talk about maybe being able to get out of our contracts because of Bell's new (invading your) privacy policy. Any chance that's something that's doable? I'm guessing that the opt-out they have gives them a bit of an out. They will probably be collecting and using all this data on everyone and simply not serving targeted ads to those who object, right? Language allowing them to collect data on me is probably already in the original agreement I signed, so I'm guessing I'm out of luck. Collecting and analyzing URLs and search terms is not something I'm crazy about though.

That's a good point. My contract is almost over so I could switch providers, but everyone probably is going to be doing this poo poo anyway, right? Telus just became available up here, so I might drop by and see what they have going on. I already have access to a VPN service, so I might try to set it up to be always on on my Android phone for cell data. I wonder if that would add a lot of overhead / connection time.

You'd think they'd learn a little more about their competitors. They didn't have any idea about the policy change even though it's been in the news and is (was?) being reviewed by the CRTC.

There was a big (for us) court case about Bell charging northern customers a 911 fee even though we don't get 911 service. When I asked about the fee in the past the answer was always, "It's automatically added by the billing software, there's nothing we can do." How much incentive do they have to fix a problem that's making them money? Flip it around and introduce an automatic 75 cent credit for customers that shouldn't be getting it and you can bet they'd sort that software out pretty loving quickly. edit: here's a random news article, but there have probably been some developments in the last year. http://www.theglobeandmail.com/repo...rticle12003832/ odiv fucked around with this message at 16:54 on Mar 27, 2014 |

So what small Androids are not lovely and available with Bell or Telus (I guess I could switch to Telus)? I've heard decent things about the Sony Z1 Compact, but it looks like I'd have to get it from somewhere else? Does anyone have a Samsung Galaxy S4 Mini and like it? With the S5 coming soon I wonder if an S5 mini is far behind. I guess the Nexus 5 isn't too big, so I might go with that. But I'd really prefer something smaller if it's not a lot worse. odiv fucked around with this message at 16:10 on Apr 16, 2014 |

Yeah, neither Bell nor Telus people here know anything about a Xperia Z1 Compact I guess I could just buy it outright. I don't know why I bother going into the stores anyway.

Ugh, just missed a sale on NCIX for an Xperia Z1 Compact. I'm pretty sure that's the phone I'll get and would have loved to get it from them as I've never been disappointed. Now I just have to figure out the best place to buy it from. What trustworthy Canadian retailers have phones for cheap?

Yeah, according to RedFlagDeals it was on for $460 on NCIX from the 24th. Whoops. I'll keep searching around I guess. Edit: yeah, I might just cave and get the Nexus from Google. Too bad they don't ship here. odiv fucked around with this message at 22:18 on Apr 29, 2014 |

I live in Yellowknife. My co-worker had to get his Nexus 5 shipped to a family member in Alberta instead. Then again, I was just speaking to another guy who said he had no problems getting a Chromecast shipped here recently, so maybe things have changed.

Anyone see/try Sugar Mobile out? http://www.cbc.ca/news/business/sugar-mobile-wireless-1.3423513 quote:You'll need an unlocked phone, but for a one-time startup fee of $29 and a monthly cost of $19, Sugar Mobile customers get unlimited talk, text, and data over Wi-Fi and 200 MB of non-Wi-Fi data. https://www.sugarmobile.ca/ 95% of the time I'm somewhere with wifi anyway...

I turned my cell data off because I was getting annoyed at it using it when it wasn't supposed to. That 200mb is supposed to cover your voip and poo poo too (?) so I have no real idea how much time it covers (edit: site says up to 600 minutes). I'm kind of curious to try it out because I can't even remember the last time I made a phone call when not at work or home. edit: I might just give the free trial a whirl. I'm spending entirely too much on this cell phone service for what I do with it. odiv fucked around with this message at 19:00 on Feb 2, 2016 |

Just loaded up the free trial and you have to do all texting and poo poo through the app itself. lol no edit: Hey awesome it crashes when I try to access a contact to text. odiv fucked around with this message at 17:55 on Feb 3, 2016 |

Free trial is wifi only, so I don't know for sure. I would guess not though since they calculate out how many Facebook posts and webpage visits 200MB is. I can't really see myself using my iPad to text while I'm out and about, so I think the Rogers plan for an iPad is probably a non-starter for me too. I'll probably just stick with what I've got. At least they didn't spam any of my contacts yet. Reviews for the app said that the first time you text someone it tells them you're using Sugar Mobile and they should try it! Hopefully they just got rid of that (or maybe they wait until you're out of trial).

Ohhh, I'm an idiot. I thought you meant just use the iPad. So what apps would people suggest for VoIP then as a replacement to mimic this Sugar Mobile thing? I wonder what the cheapest data only is I can get up here. No Rogers.

Okay, so say I'm ready to try this Virgin Mobile deal. Do I just pay the $50 Bell wants for unlocking? That seems steep and I haven't really been paying attention to this poo poo. I do kinda need a new phone anyway and was going to drop by the Sony store while I'm down south for the week, but apparently they were all shut down.

So what happens after 90 days? Can you just get the same plan again? Or who knows? I hopped on that $40 for 1GB Virgin deal around Canada Day, so thanks for the heads up, thread. Not planning on switching, I'm fine with 1GB for now. Still need a phone though. It's hard to pull the trigger on these drat things.

Where do you get your phones? I'm giving up looking at phones and am just going to go with an Xperia Z5 Compact for my Virgin plan. Where do I even get those, reliably, and with the least amount of hassle, in Canada? NCIX has a sale every once and a while and sells them for just under $600, so I was probably going to go with that since they've been fine to deal with in the past. Any better suggestions? I don't want to get it from some rando on eBay or a 3rd party seller on Amazon.

Just got my 911 class action lawsuit settlement cheques. Just over $30! NWT has no 911 service, Bell was charging us anyway. When I asked about it they said they couldn't change it in the billing software or some poo poo. Bet you they could figure it out pretty quickly if they were undercharging.

I just got the OnePlus 3 (originally wanted an Xperia Z5 Compact, but that's getting a bit dated and it doesn't look like there's a good small replacement) and it's pretty sweet so far. I can report back after a week or two if you want.

What network are they on? (I should probably just scroll back and check) I'm in the NWT so... I'm hesitant. On Virgin now for $40 which I got on Canada Day and it's been fine. I don't think I'd save much going to Public Mobile, right? My OnePlus 3 has been awesome so far, btw. Sucked having to get new cables (grumble), but Dash charging is super loving fast and life changing.

A building burned down here which maybe (?) could have been saved if we had 911. Guy from Newfoundland was on the premises, couldn't get through to 911, assumed his phone was hosed up so he drove to the fire hall to let them know. No one was hurt though, so there hasn't really been any pressure on implementing 911 service.

I'm in the NWT so I haven't really looked into them. We have Telus/Bell and I can choose Northwest Territories as my location on their website so should work? They say "province wide" for stuff though, so I should probably make sure. edit: Yeah, I mean no technical reason it wouldn't work, just making sure billing/etc would be fine. So here's an Unlimited* plan for $89/mo for the Territories: https://www.icewireless.com/en/unlimited-89 * 4GB outside their network, which looks like it's 3G right now with LTE Advanced "coming soon"? I don't really need this, but for people who are used to paying about the same to Bell for a lot less, it generating some buzz. I was expecting more small print, but I'm guessing I can drop by their shop and read it. odiv fucked around with this message at 07:04 on Dec 14, 2017 |

So honestly how is 3G? Is it good enough for Netflix? If I do get this unlimited package I mentioned earlier and end up streaming all the time, I wonder if they'll just cancel my account? I should probably just check with them when "LTE Advanced" is actually rolling out, though if it's not yet I don't know if I should jump ship to a new plan based on "real soon now, promise!" odiv fucked around with this message at 04:38 on Dec 16, 2017 |

Oh yeah, nice, they lost the ssl cert. Great confidence builder in your services! Their site was working a couple days ago, I swear. I might just go in and talk to them tomorrow and get all the small print. $89 is a lot, but if I lose wifi at work, then unlimited would be really good peace of mind. Plus if I have unlimited on my phone I can maybe cut my home Internet down a bit (right now I'm at a 300GB cap and it's expensive).
