Just the kind of quality service I can expect from Rogers. If your phone number gets jacked don't be surprised at ALL.

If you're a Rogers customer, they can literally walk into a rogers store with any phone and your phone number and ask for an eSIM, is my experience.

As far as I'm concerned I was the victim of SIM theft. The only saving grace is that I was also the perpetrator.

Maybe it’s really early and my coffee hasn’t hit yet, but I can’t actually figure out how much Rogers wants to add an LTE Apple Watch to my Infinite plan. I’m debating upgrading my watch and I guess want to see if it’s another $10 addon like my tablet, or what, but I’m blanking on finding any actual price. Anyone have an LTE watch on their infinite plan that has any hard non-retention pricing?

I’d like to maybe just carry my watch on walks/jogs/etc but if it’s like $10/month again I’ll just get a regular model and keep tethering to my phone.

We're mostly through 2022. Why, in this age, do I need a physical object from Rogers to activate an eSIM? It's a loving QR code (??), just sell me one on your website. Don't make me wait to receive a hunk of single use plastic in the mail.

I mean yeah, I can go buy one at the store too, but the whole concept of buying a physical item to enable a digital asset in 2022 is incredibly "Canadian Cellular" to me.

Is Rogers starting to insert "Likely Spam" into caller ID for suspicious calls now or is this something I added to my phone without remembering it?

I almost wanted to answer the phone and ask if this was a likely spam call but they're all automated these days. The last live human I got back when I still picked up voice calls was duct cleaning three years ago, and at least I could have some fun leading them on. Basically if it's not a number in my address book I will literally not pick up the phone. I think there's a way to make my iPhone not ring unless it's from a known number but I think that involves monkeying with do-not-disturb settings or something so for now I'm happy enough to just insta-X the call screen.

Given that literally any time you want to move your eSIM you need to pay Rogers for the privilege of scanning a physical QR code (which you conveniently need to pay Rogers $20 for), I would have imagined they would loudly lobby Apple to ditch the SIM slot. Filthy freeloading communists moving their service between devices at will for FREE :|

I remember when I was upgrading phones and I decided to do it after work (and coincidentally after the rogers stores were shut for the day) and after I restored my backup to a new phone I was stuck without Cell/SMS until I could hoof it over to the local kiosk the next morning. It's a loving QR code my dude, just take my twenty dollars and show or email me a jpeg I can scan online at rogers dot ca, don't mail me a loving card.

I really quickly realized how many of my services were set up for SMS 2FA the second it was inaccessible :haw:

I'm looking to switch from Rogers to something on the Bell network. Outage aside, the real reason is that the area within a 20 minute walk of my house is really really hit or miss for reliability. I'll walk outside, have half bars, and data/voice still refuse to work reliably.

Anecdotally, my friends on Bell don't seem to have this issue so I have to presume there's some tower location stuff going on, which feels weird since I would imagine they'd all be in the same high spots.

Anyway, long story short, I'm already a Bell internet customer and that's been good so I'm OK to give them a try.

Current plan:

Rogers Infinite 20: ~$91 after tax
Tablet Plan: ~$30 after tax
Total bill: ~$120/mo

Total bill: ~$120

I'm currently looking at:

Bell Essentials 25gb: $96 after tax
Tablet add-on: $12 after tax
Total est: ~$108/mo, but could come down if there's a bundle discount for my other services (iptv/internet)

Two things about Bell that are irking me:

- Essentials plan is limited to SD streaming? How? Has to be some kind of QoS fuckery because presumably they don't have introspection to manipulate an encrypted stream to my content source, right? If I ask youtube for a 1080 or 4k video, unless they're doing some ssl decryption they're not going to tell YT that "oh no, he really actually just wanted the 480p version lol". Is this enforced in practice? Presumably this is only a ploy to get people to say "i'm not going to pay them $5 to unlock HD streaming, I'll just pay them $10 to go to the next 45gb package" right?

- Tablet add-on for "unlimited" plans says that it's limited to 512kbps?? What the poo poo? Is this for real? I keep the tablet plan around as a holdover from when my phone was dead after a long day and I wanted to podcast or browse the web on the train commute home so I can probably give this one the axe. Not to be uncle moneybags here, but $10 isn't a lot of money to me so I would probably keep it around if it wasn't crippled, but honestly I can't see the value if it's actually capped at 512kbps.

Thoughts? The tablet thing isn't really make or break, I can always add it later if I really miss it and am commuting again, otherwise I can tether from my phone. The weird streaming limitation does feel like a make or break thing, though either way I would come out cheaper or same price as Rogers and still fix my overarching coverage issue.

If it's all worst-case answers, I may just get the 45gb plan, no tablet, and live with that for a while, all the while pondering how it's 2022 and visual voicemail is still a paid add-on.

e: Phone is BYOP on an old iPhone XS so no phone purchase.

That IS a great deal, but the only reason that I'm staying clear of Virgin right now has nothing to do with Virgin itself, but the fact that the plan isn't unlimited.

I checked my data usage across my phone and tablet and I'm over 20gb combined for the month (I like to work outside the house, not gonna lie) so if I'm going to kill the tablet plan and tether off my phone I will pretty easily see months where I run into overages on Virgin :(

Podcasts seem to be the biggest hitter for me. This is easily solved if I’d just download them at home instead of trying to find something new on my daily jog, but it’s just never really mattered until I started to consider moving off of an “unlimited” data plan. Now I’m kind of worried it’s too muscle-memory.

I’m pretty sure I have Overcast set to auto-download my subscriptions but somehow there’s always something wrong where it either misses, doesn’t download, or.. Not sure, haven’t put too much thought into it.

I basically side-graded from Rogers to Bell because I get zero reception in my immediate neighbourhood. It was super refreshing to walk outside my house and get full 5G bars. It was less refreshing to be on hold with Rogers for an hour and a half waiting for someone to cancel because I cant do it online.

Even less refreshing having the retention rep offer me a hundred different things despite my major complaint being I GET UNRELIABLE CELL SERVICE FOR ~5KM OUTSIDE MY HOUSE. My dude, unless you are offering a cell tower in my neighbour’s back yard then I’m not even remotely interested.

I guess I’d like a second set of eyes on my thinking. I’m with Bell and about to leave for Japan for 21days in about a week. My plan is to buy a reputable and well reviewed 30-day travel eSim for my iPhone and rely on that for data rather than paying Bell $16/day, given the travel eSim is maybe $50 after conversion.

I WOULD disable my Bell SIM altogether while I’m abroad, but I have stupid services like my bank or potentially other things I’d need to log into which continue to use SMS for MFA rather than offering an offline option. And also aging parents and such and .. well, I just don’t like the idea of being completely out of touch for three weeks.

Their FAQ on the Roam Better w/Data plan says:

So, uhh OK. I think they spell it out really clearly but just to make sure I’m not misinterpreting the most blatant statement I’ll reiterate and someone tell me if I’m off base:

- I can simply disable the data roaming option on my Bell line before departing YYZ but leave the SIM itself enabled otherwise
- Not pick up random voice calls with the understanding that doing so incurs a $16 charge for that day
- Not make any voice calls with the same financial implication
- Not send any SMS with the same financial implication
- Under the terms above any SMS sent TO me but NOT replied to incurs no daily charge and/or “shouldn’t” trigger a daily Roam Better charge (my MFA use case)

And obviously if I get like six voice calls from my family in a two minute span it’s clearly an emergency like “I tried to close my browser and the computer is asking if I want to close this window, what should I do??” and I just eat the $16 and pick up the drat phone, so I’m not oblivious and out of reach for three weeks.

Again, sorry for asking the incredibly obvious but I have a costly history of misinterpreting basic terms and conditions.

When I went to the UK last year I relied on the Roam Better functionality and it was a great experience overall, I just didn’t love the idea of my phone bill doubling when I could have paid the equivalent of a nice meal for a travel eSim instead.

I’m travelling with an Ubigi eSIM on my 14. I think they have Europe/uk options and I can’t recommend them enough based on my current experience in Japan.

The app and site looks sketchy as gently caress but I’ll vouch for it.

I think the 12 is eSIM capable so that’s definitely what I’d recommend. You don’t even have to wait until you land. Set up the eSIM in advance then buy a data plan for it the day of your flight. Ready to go when you land.

E: sorry I missed you were looking for a physical sim. Although (and I mean this in the least snarky way possible) I’m wondering why you wouldn’t just go with an eSIM given the convenience and ease of reload. You don’t even need to eject your regular sim, just switch it off in cellular settings.

But yeah, just checked now that I’m back at the hotel. iPhone 12 is a dual SIM phone so you can easily install an eSIM to go with your regular nano card. I have the same setup on my 14. Bell SIM is physical because I was too lazy to go back to have them port it to an e, but then my travel plan is an eSIM. Have one on my iPad Pro too.

Ubigi seems to have a 50GB/$40 (USD)/30 days package, looks like it’s probably not as cheap as the cards Chris is talking about so that may be a reason to get an O2 thing for sure. Anyway, you have some options :). Not going to shill my referral code but if anyone is interested it does appear to give 20% off order so DM me if you do go that route.

I’m waffling on whether I actually would get call control if Bell offered it. Mainly because I know they’d charge like $10/month and right now I get maybe two spam calls a month that are silenced anyway.

My work line is much worse. It wasn’t until a month or two into my new work number assignment that I remembered that I don’t actually have to give businesses my real contact info because I don’t actually ever want these people to reach me after I go to work events, seminars, conferences, etc, but by then the damage was done. Needless to say that phone sits plugged in in a drawer and I don’t give it a second thought for months at a time.

JFC I just had to end-around Bell entirely to get my new iPad added to my existing shareable data line. I've been on the horn with them for two hours trying to talk to someone who can add a tablet to the account, since I didn't buy it from them. The guys at the actual store were apologetic but less than helpful too.

Eventually I found that you can just pull open the iOS app, click on "activate a connected device", plug in your IMEI and EID and it'll auto-generate an eSim for you and give you the option of adding it to your shareable account. It shows up as a "laptop" but whatever. gently caress, I can't believe how useless this whole process was.
