Yeah seems like the response time for issues is on the order of weeks.

To be fair they're incredibly backlogged from the million people who signed up over the past month. That would strain any support system. There is definitely a trade off with the cost but I think it's worth it when you look at the savings over time, not to mention the quality of the network.

A friend of mine needs a phone that supports NFC and "pictures in SMS" which I thought was all of them these days but apparently not. Her budget doesn't allow for a Pixel. What are some good options below $500 unlocked that will work on Public Mobile?

It's like night and day how I used to use my cell phone before that plan and how I use it now. Not having to give a drat about data anymore has made my phone a thousand times more useful and enjoyable. Well, that and my new phone's better battery life.

I got my girlfriend on that plan. She went from paying Rogers over $150 per month to $120 every 3, insane what people will put up with. I'm still on that crazy Koodo SK plan and I'm not switching until data usage threatens to become a factor again.

Are the Pixel prices ever going to drop or is it just pegged at the same price as the Pixel 2 until inventory runs out? Both are listed at "from $899" on the Google Store, loving hell.

I think I'm just going to keep my SK plan, I don't think I've ever come close to 5GB and it's $13 cheaper. Tempting though.

I've been with Koodo for 2 years on the manitoba plan (on the 10gb Ontario plan since December) and they haven't done anything bad but offer me "deals" through their sketchy tab small/medium/large gaming.

I have half a mind of switching to Freedom mobile just so I can browse my horse porn on the subway for 1/3 the price of this service.

Is Freedom any good with whatever LTE band they have nowadays? I mean I'm usually on wifi at home/work anyway but sometimes I need to price check or something while I'm out. Freedom was always awful at even trying to accomplish those simple goals. The latency was the loving worst, it felt like trying to use Netflix on a rogers rocketstick out in the boonies or something.

I've been with that MB/Koodo plan for awhile now and I think I'll just hang onto it but I was curious.

Either put up hard evidence that spy software has been found in Huawei/ZTE phones on the market and they are "loaded to the brim", or don't post unfounded suspicions/rumours like that.

Counter-point.

Numerous governments have major security concerns - that includes non-US governments. Asking people to present peer reviewed evidence and studies isn't really fair (your own links aren't sourced either), much of it is gathered by foreign intelligence agencies. While I'm willing to accept that the US Government could have other motivations, I'm more skeptical that Poland, New Zealand, the rest of the EU and our own government are just doing this for the sake of...what exactly? Where theres smoke, there is generally fire.

Just so we're clear, are you telling us we are not allowed to discuss this? My brother has a Huawei phone and I don't really care one way or the other but I like to at least be aware and informed about these things.

I'm not going to take it because I never get close to my cap, but I just got a text from Koodo offering an additional 3GB of data for $10/mo or additional 10GB of data for $15/mo.

Yeah I got the same targeted offer. I'm on Wifi at home and work so its hard to justify. The SK plan is still going strong and I've only ever come close to my cap once when we were in Nashville and did a ton of streaming while we drove around. It seems almost reasonable by Canadian telco standards but I just don't need it.

I'm on Wifi at home and the office, I'm not sure I would even notice anything at all. I guess I do look up at the odd thing at malls/stores and probably would be annoyed with the latency increase but whatever.

I have a friend of the family who is involved in some sort of marital split and its become pretty bitter. They shared a Rogers family account but everything is in one persons name and they have the PIN/etc for the account. The friend wants to split off and just have their own Rogers account and keep their ancient phone #. Will Rogers accommodate this or are they going to insist that the account holder approve it?

I'm with Koodo and have no idea about Rogers policies. I assume they would allow it as long as she pays her device balance. Normally I would just tell her to go ahead and call Rogers but I know in the past when I've ported #s before they wanted some weird PIN and other info.

Is their name on the account as an authorised user? Then probably.

If not it's probably easier to just port the number out to another carrier using the account number and a minwage kiosk employee who doesn't care.

I have no idea but I doubt it. It's one of those situations where one person was handling all of the finances. There's also a device balance on her phone which complicates things. Ugh.

Anyone else get one of these lovely emails this morning?

quote:

Dear <Gunslinger>

We recently detected a security incident impacting your account information.
What happened:
On February 13, 2020, an unauthorized third party using compromised credentials accessed our systems and copied August/September 2017 data that included your mobility account number and telephone number. It is possible that the information exposed has changed since 2017, in which case your current information is not compromised.
What we are doing:
We acted quickly to prevent further unauthorized access. Some customers could have been at risk of unauthorized number porting, where a fraudster could use the compromised information to gain control of a customer’s phone number by moving it to another carrier. This would mean that the fraudster would receive your calls and texts. To prevent this, we have applied port protection on your account. Port protection is a feature that prevents the porting of your number to another carrier unless you call us first. If you’d like to have this feature removed, please contact us.
We have found evidence that the unauthorized third party is offering the information for sale online. With port protection in place, we do not believe that your information could be used for any fraudulent purposes. Nevertheless, we have reported this incident to Law Enforcement and the Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada and we are working closely with them on this matter.
What you can do:
As always, be diligent in monitoring your online accounts and email for any suspicious activity. Ensure that you do not reuse the same login credentials across different accounts, and use passwords that are difficult to guess. We also recommend that you not register your mobile telephone number on online accounts. If you have done so, you may want to remove it and use an alternative method to receive One Time Passcodes or 2 Factor Authentication codes.
If you have any questions, please contact us at 1 866 995 6636, Monday - Sunday, 9:00 a.m. - 10:00 p.m. ET.
At Koodo, we believe customer privacy is of the utmost importance. We are taking this matter very seriously. We remain committed to protecting your privacy. We sincerely regret any inconvenience or concern this may cause and look forward to continuing to serve you in the future.

Sincerely,

Jim Senko
President, Mobility Solutions

I got a CPO "Great" condition iPhone 11 Pro on that Koodo deal posted on Redflagdeals yesterday, $306 - $100 in $10 bill credits for 10 months. So basically $206 all in for an iPhone 11 Pro, not bad at all. I was going to be with Koodo for 2 more years anyway since everyone else has terrible pricing and I'm fairly happy with the Telus/Bell network in my area. My ancient Saskatoon plan was only $2 cheaper than one of their midrange tab plans with the same features so I went with that. Should be a nice upgrade on my aging iPhone 8 Plus, though the lack of a home button is going to be jarring.

It's getting harder and harder to find these sorts of deals now that carriers have mostly given up on subsidizing peoples expensive phones. I remember the bonanza 3-4 years ago where you could basically hose the phone company for a change.

I'm having the same issue with an Apple watch. Super annoying that I would be forced to move to Telus and so I'm just going go without cellular until they see reason.

That was pretty much my experience with Freedom way back when it was Wind. Basically couldn't use it inside of most buildings and it barely worked even in my house. Wifi calling was pretty new back then so it was miserable. I put up with it and then switched to Koodo under that Saskatoon plan for like 7+ years. I had it until today when I called to complain about something else and they offered to upgrade it to $50/12GB. It was an extra $4 to get over twice the data so I went for it. Really happy with the Telus/Bell shared tower thing on Koodo.

That's what I went to as well. Saved $20/mo and I'm on WIFI for everything except car music streaming so data is a non-issue. The eSim/port was done almost instantly, very smooth process.
