I'm never sure what to make of North Korea since for all their sabre rattling I haven't actually seen them DO anything since the Korean war finished. Skirmishes sure, and that ridiculous tree incident, but I think for all their bluster they're scared to do anything because they know China is the only reason they aren't currently part of (South-run) Unified Korea, and that China won't actually help them if they strike first.

That said, maybe Jong-un feels like ending the family name with a bang.

Is sinking a South Korean frigate and killing 50 sailors just a skirmish?

It's fascinating watching mainstream liberals look at Xi Jinping after 30 years of insisting that China's not really Marxist and it's just a show and beginning to wonder hey wait a minute does this guy actually take this stuff seriously?

What has he done to make people think that? Sure he's authoritarian, but China has hardly abandoned "capitalism with chinese characteristics" on his watch.

I still think that concept of "monarchy" is so insanely stupid.

I can't believe I'm saying this but at least with fascism leader's are chosen based on "the vision of the ideology". But monarchy is just like "lol I'm the rulers son so I'm automatically the best to rule!"

I'm familiar with political bloodlines but nowhere that comes to mind practices it that strict outside North Korea (maybe the Saudis?).

Monarchies have one great advantage, they are socially stable. One man with a vision, can easily be replaced by another man with a vision. And that man could be any charismatic colonel in the country. But with a monarchy, there are only a few options. The first son, his brothers...maybe his uncles. Dynasties tend to last centuries, dictatorships a few decades.

I don't know if I would call Japanese politics boring. I think like a lot of things Japanese; it's usually quit but when it goes crazy it goes crazy. I can't think of another example of a former chief executive being gunned down and the public response is, "That assassin had a point"

Wasn't that a common reaction in Japan in the 1920s and 30s?

It isn't just politics. Yes, American politics are getting worse, but innovation happens in the private sector. Japanese "old guard" companies are EXTREMELY resistant to change and innovation. Hell, cashless payment just started catching on ~3 years ago. And going back to government, they are only recently starting to allow some things to be done online. If I check the wireless networks around my house I get about a dozen WEP networks because ISPs are still using them by default on most routers. Floppy disks are still a thing for regular day to day government business. It is insanity.

Is everything official online required to use Internet Explorer like in Korea?

The Manifesto Project in the EU does try to compare parties based on their election manifestos (the methodology is available on their site).

For Japan, politics generally score "left" compared to a lot of other countries:

The relative ratings of the major parties is pretty obvious from right to left.

Compare this to Germany, a baseline EU country:

Here you have AfD as a clear hard-right, with most German parties rated as relatively centrist to hard left (Die Linke).

If you consider the LDP as right-wing, then obviously you'll think a score around zero isn't centrist. Using Germany as a comparison, a score of -20 to -40 would be arguably *somewhere* on 'the left'. The JCP or Social Democratic Party are clearly leftist.

Incidentally, I am not American, and live in Denmark.

Obligatory Addendum:

Under Clinton and during Bush, the Democrats moved hard to the center-right, but under Obama and now Biden (who is nothing if not an old-school middle-of-the-road Democrat), they have moved back hard left.
How can the GOP not have moved further right than that over the last 6 years? Did they defeat the metric by not having a party manifesto in 2020?

CNN got their hands on a war game that projected a costly western victory over China in a Taiwan war.

Of interest to this thread was this.

quote:

Japan is likely to lose more than 100 combat aircraft and 26 warships while US military bases on its home territory come under Chinese attack, the report found.

How do you think the Japanese public would react to this?

Is it really an invasion if the enemy doesn't manage to make it to land?

Obviously. I meant how would the public react to those things happening.
