You can: log in, read the tech support FAQ, or request your lost password. This dumb message (and those ads) will appear on every screen until you register! Get rid of this crap by registering your own SA Forums Account and joining roughly 150,000 Goons, for the one-time price of $9.95! Blah blah blah.
My best friend got an account while we were in college so he pretty much forced me to get one as well. By forced I mean he would read the forums, laugh hysterically, and not let me see what was so funny until I got my own account.

My equals are none.
A friend registered and kept linking me cool stuff. I rather enjoyed how topics tended to stay on topic, probably :10bux: making account bans actually hurt the banished a little.

I'm an on-again, off-again EVE Online player with probably less than a year of active in-game time on my 6 year old character. I've read plenty of posts over the years about Goons and Goonswarm, and they always seemed to be pretty negative.

When I resubscribed to EVE a couple of months ago, I joined a newbie-friendly corp and found myself really enjoying the game for the first time; so much so that my interest has lasted (and continues to) a few months. I started reading up on the various wars, alliances, and other player-generated NEWS (which IMO sets EVE apart from other MMOs), and began to pick up on the whole propoganda-metagame that people play in EVE.

I came across The Mittani's series of articles on TenTonHammer, and found them very interesting, informative, sensible, etc - exactly the opposite of what I expected from the guy who got banned for supposedly urged a player to commit suicide (which I learned was down to typical media spin to get reader interest). Wow - all this around a game!

But my prejudice said, 'Well, he's the leader, a master of PR, posting on a respected site, so he's spinning with the best of them. Let me check their website and forums to see what it's like.'

And, again, a 'wow' moment.

I can't say I've ever been pulled into a forum so quickly, one that covers such a diverse range of topics in a mostly mature, informed, respectful manner (I pretty quickly got trapped reading through the 'ask me about being homeless' thread on my first visit).

As I said, I'm currently in a newbie-friendly corp, so will eventually want to move on to bigger and better things in game. I'm now really intrigued by GoonWaffe, and know the normal way to get in is to be a good member at SA for a few months. So here's my start!

I'm typically a pretty shy guy, and must admit I'm a bit overwhelmed and intimidated by a lot of what I've read. I'm not sure I'll have much to contribute, but, what better way to find out than to give it a start. So...

I was surprised there wasn't already a 'why are you here' thread. Maybe I'm just being nosy, but I think it'd be interesting to know not only what first brought you to these forums, but why you chose to stay.

To read YCS. Goodbye.

Peer pressure. A few friends I hang out in IRC with told me about SA and to pay tenbux. I visited SA and didn't pay. I lurked for 2 or 3 years because I'm poor and cheap and poor. Finely I got so sick of seeing ads and "gently caress" and those bastards telling me to pay up that I folded and paid up.

I had several goon friends who kept linking me to 'hilarious threads' that were behind the paywall, so eventually I just paid the :10bux: and that was that.

A friend and coworker of mine showed me his thread on Ask/Tell about working on a cruise ship when I first got a job with Royal Caribbean Cruises. It was a good read but it was the video gaming forums that made me buy a account and now I am writing this on my phone on the...well just guess, 3ish years later.

Lurked, read, and enjoyed as much as the site as I could for years until I finally got off my fat duff and plunked the cash down to become a forum member.

I like the broad range of people/topics/ideas/arguments that I can find here; the humor hereabouts just seals the deal.

Back when I was literally a teenager (jesus christ I've been a Goon for almost 13 years) I thought the Straight Dope forums were the most hilarious thing. Then a thread to the SA forums got linked, I checked it out, and my life was effectively over.

The forums today are a very, very different place than they were back then. Good in some ways, bad in others. I've seen so much content here, a lot of it truly incredible, and I've forgotten most of it.

Can't quite remember how I initially found SA, but I lurked for ages and read and loved a lot of the awesome megathreads in GBS - particularly the ghost story threads, and the unexplained mysteries ones, and strange things that have happened to you, and all of that ilk. Also started reading Debate and discussion, and eventually wanted to start contributing to the discussions.

With the destruction of GBS and what seems to be the loss of all those great megathreads my appreciation of SA has dipped a bit...

I can't remember if someone sent me the Cliff Yablonski articles or I found the link on XE but I've been reading front page article since like '01 and didn't even know there were forums for like six years. I would just sit over in my college computer lab reading the "Guides." I think I got banned from the counterstrike gamespy forums for posting the guide to counterstrike. I do remember trying to read the forums for awhile without paying but it was miserable so I kicked in my :10bux: probably so I could read ycs or something dumb.

I must have been aware of the front page bullshit in the early 2000s. I used to play a lot of quake and read quakeworld but never made that connection until years later. I lurked for the longest time as I felt I had nothing to add and had no credit card. I still have nothing to add but I'm just so drat good at it that I've never received a prob or ban in 5 years. I want to say that owl megathread in the old gbs really made me pay ten bux because gently caress you lowtax for making the forums not viewable for half the year. I honestly thought for the longest time that people really said gently caress.

WHAT A LOVELY DAY
I joined as I was reading one of the epic threads like Tales of a Streetsweeper or the P-p-p-p-Powerbook, the next day went to carry on reading from where I left off and got the message that the boards were shut at the time to guests so I couldn't read any more unless I registered

Best $10 I've ever spent.

Which reminds me, is there some kind of list/archive somewhere with of all the of the amazing story threads that came out of this place like the stories of a shitsucker, the forgotten employee, and the weird haunted military outpost thing? I've got archives but can't find them :(

I was a lurker for a long time. I was following a great ARG in GBS (The Save Sara one) and figured out a puzzle. No one else had solved it so I registered and posted it.

This turned out to be a bad idea because my recent reg date caused people to think I was in on it, which I wasn't. Oops!

Don't know how many signed up around when I did and said this, but my reason was most definitely 2 things:

1) DPPH - Don't Post Porn Here (lots of porn was posted there)
2) nmp3 - no mp3's (tons of mp3's)

For you youngin's who weren't around then, DPPH was possibly the best porn resource I have *ever* come across. nmp3 and the old FTP servers packed with full albums of perfect ripping quality were abundant.

EDIT: And wow...can't believe it's been 13-14 years I've been here now.

I read bits and pieces through the paywall when I was a teen (and credit-card less), then I fell off the internet due to Problems. Recently a friend linked me a thread on dating and I bought an account because I'm a freakin' adult now.

The astoundingly helpful and professional forums on bodybuilding/tech-stuff/guns were an unexpected bonus. A fitness thread got me so fired up I've started lifting again.

I found the forums through the Cliff Yablonski page. That was at least 8 or 10 years ago. I looked at all the funny stupid poo poo in GBS when I could (didn't have an account), and browsed the anime and games forums religiously. I'm barely here anymore but I stick around for PYF, A/T, YLLS, and the creative forums. I'd be interested in a psychology forum but there's not much of that here.
