I thought this was from Josef Koudelka's coverage of the Prague Spring but is apparently from Ladislav Bielik. While looking through Koudelka's pictures, I found a hauntingly similar photograph by him. Speaking of influential and controversial photos and photographers, I'd like to talk about the German photographer August Sander. In 1911 he set out on his ambitious project People of the 20th Century. His objective was to photograph people of all social classes. He took honest deadpan portraits of farmers, builders, accountants... He would then categorize them in different sections: The Farmer, The Skilled Tradesman, Woman, Classes and Professions, The Artists, The City, and The Last People He never finished the project though he did manage to amass 40,000 images by 1945. He did publish a book that was a preview of sorts named Face of our Time in 1929. Seems innocuous enough. Unfortunately, the Nazi Regime thought differently. The depiction of the lower class Germans did not coincide with the image that they wanted to show of the proud heroic Aryan. They burned copies of the book and destroyed his photographic plates.

Some things happened on the Italian left from the late '60s to the early '80s. That period is now remembered by historians as the Years of Lead, and these pics come from that time. It's a very interesting time to read about if you're into workerism/autonomism/etc. It's a shame that these jerks had to ruin it for everyone. the2ndgenesis fucked around with this message at 02:02 on Jul 4, 2012 |

After World War II, the Western Allies were concerned with the vacuum left after the upheaval of Axis dictators, specifically in Italy. Cjones posted:1978 murder of PM Aldo Moro, assumed to be by the Red Brigades with involvement from NATO stay-behind operatives I've done some reading on the Red Brigades and I think it's pretty much well established by now that they were the ones behind the Moro affair. I've never heard about any NATO involvement aside from vague accusations against GLADIO, though. Could you possibly explain what you mean by that? Edit: Now that I think of it, one of their last abductions was against a NATO general. He was eventually rescued. Edit 2: This is a picture thread and we are talking about the Red Brigades, so... the2ndgenesis fucked around with this message at 04:02 on Jul 4, 2012 |

I don't think there's a doubt that the Red Brigades kidnapped and killed him, but the conspirators's questions arise due to how "easily" a Prime Minister was kidnapped and killed. Many think there were men on the inside who wanted him gone and cooperated with the Red Brigades. The heads of security in place were linked with clandestine NATO operations. The more realistic hypothesis is that the Italian government/NATO handlers were willing to sacrifice Moro in order to keep the stability and further weaken the Left.
