I get my first paycheck after 3 weeks with my new job tonight at midnight. Since I'm going from ~$20/mo in income (and only made $10k/yr before that) to $4,400/mo (net) in income, we're finally paying off a loving payday loan from January. We've been paying $100 every 2 weeks since then, for a total of $1,000 in interest on a $750 principal because our truck broke down at the wrong time. A new battery and alternator---which happened to both go out at the same loving time, just when I lost my $10k job with no unemployment, because I was a contractor---cost us >= $1,750.00. gently caress me that's 1/10th of our old yearly income.

Anyway I'm really glad we're finally paying it off, it's a huge financial burden to be getting rid of. From $0.61 in our bank account to $2,900 in our bank account overnight! (Wife's getting paid tomorrow, too). We can finally catch up on bills while still having a little left over for groceries, and gas, for once.

Wanted to give you an e-high-five. I've been excited about a lot of things but that sounds like on of the more exciting turn of events a human could reasonably face. Drink a beer and enjoy for a minute

I am statistically underpaid, working as a developer in a small company. I voiced my concerns about this and the owners were receptive. I presented working part-time for higher pay as a compromise to the increased costs and they have voiced interest. As it stands they can to alter my pay to:
144% of my current salary to continue working on site 40hrs per week
135% of my current salary to work on site 24hrs, remote 16hrs per week
74% of my current salary to work remotely 3 days a week with benefits
105% percent of my current salary to work as a 3 day a week remote contractor (no benefits)
Or of course maintain the current deal or fire me, neither of which they have indicated they would like to do.

We've talked the numbers and the issues, so now they just want time to decide which implementation is best for cost/availability.

I'm pretty floored. For me, time off is more important than the final dollar amount as long as I can pay bills. It also allows for prioritization of tasks, where only the most important jobs will be escalated to me. The tedious bullshit that drags down my hourly rate can finally go to someone with a lower skill set. I'm really glad they understand the value of this reallocation plan.

Final meeting in 2 weeks to discuss the execution plan that will begin Jan 1st. Fingers crossed.

Great news! They accepted. We are in final negotiations on total pay but starting Jan 2nd, I will work remotely 3 day a week on a guaranteed salary based on 24 hours. Any weeks that come up under, the un-utilized hours will roll over. Any overages or time on site will be logged and invoiced at the end of the month in addition to the salaried amount. I will not receive benefits so I am negotiating the hourly rate to compensate - as my initial conditions assumed benefits would be included. I am happy enough with the numbers without benefits but that said I am still going to adjust my ask to cover the difference.

Not only do I get guaranteed income for part time remote availability, but I get 10 vacation days reseting in early December and able to be used before the new deal takes effect in January. I'm over the moon right now. Going from 40hrs on-site to 24 hours off-site with comparable yearly numbers is a dream come true for me!

Not sure that should be the takeaway from this story.

May I ask what your preferred takeaway is? My negotiations worked out perfectly to my liking, and the newfound free time allows me to break into my long term goal of freelance contracting with minimal risk. Our household budget is minimally affected by this move and is no where near broken.

On the flip side, oh god I am almost 28 and this is my first real job. I've been in school forever. What's it like to be an adult? Is it magical? It better be magical.

They absolutely are. The vast majority of new hires are from existing positions. Hang in there and use it as leverage in a couple weeks/months.

I can't imagine anything more difficult that writing 40k words of fictional dialogue and situations, my mind being the way it is. I cringe at the thought of 400 words of fiction, or even just a plot outline.

[Crosspost from career path thread.]

I just accepted a new position that is more challenging and much better for my long term career. I am working part time salaried now, but my W2 gross was only $32k last year. The new position is $60k. Yowza! I had been at my current job for 4 years and started just before I graduated college. I never bothered to look around because I am a dope (and part time salaried work sounded cooler than it was.)

Just calculated out that after my fiancee and I get married in September, my take-home pay will immediately go up by $500 a month and hers should go up by around $100 a month. Hooray for a $70k income disparity I guess :v:

Nice! Our income was such that there was actually a bigger tax burden when we got married :/ If one of us could have taken the standard deduction and the other itemized we could have gotten our 2k tax bill down to like $700. Ugh. I was so bummed when I found out both have to standard or itemize even if filing separately. But obviously our withholdings were jacked anyway so this year will be better.

Werent you the person who went part time remote to work on an online business? I remember thinking it was really cool that you did that. How did everything turn out with the online business and what made you want to go back to a regular full time job?

I am! It was a really cool experience and I am really happy I did it. It was a combination of things that took me down that path.

Initially I asked for the part time arrangement to: maximize my efficiency, allow for more time for side work, spend more time with my wife. I ended up getting a good hourly raise with the arrangement, but my income was reduced overall. I was able to maintain benefits, which was great.

That arrangement lasted over a year, and things slowly came into perspective over that time. Probably the largest issue being timing and availability based demands. I was a little too wishy washy in the beginning when it came to defining my availability. So even though I was only meant to work 24 hours a week, I was on a morning phone call every day; I was putting out those early morning fires where needed; I was meant to be available from 1:30-6 every day as stable hours. Many weeks I worked 30-40hrs. My free time I was meant to be expanding my career horizons with usually ended up with me taking a long drive, getting lunch, and reading the forums. The other perspective that came into focus is that I may not be the right personality to drive my own work day. Most progress I made on side gigs was made at night and on weekends, and wouldn't have caused had I worked 40hrs still. I am not actually a self starter, it appears.

Also this year's Q1 ended up being a really slow for my wife project wise, and our margins started getting uncomfortably thin. My company I was working for started going through some major shifts in scope and direction and they ended up acquiring another firm. This brought in another skilled web dev and all of the sudden my leaving wouldn't pose an immense threat to their operations. This was a huge relief, as all of these factors were weighing heavy on me and I was thinking more and more every day that 28 is too young to just subsist on part time income.

It was a great year and I'd never take it back. But moving on to a new more challenging job with better mentorship has already done more for my drive and hope for the future than I could have imagined. I'm amped up to dig back into my career beyond just clocking in and out and that's a great place to be.

Also, this week marked the point in income/bank balances that my income can cover all budgeted expenses and my wife's irregular income can super charge debt repayment and savings. We are both more relaxed and I feel like our time together feels more quality now.

I will say that if we ever decide to have kids I would like to save up hard for the 9 months of pregnancy and try to work out a part time deal again if my job at the time allows.

Thanks for asking :)

When I got hired, bi-yearly bonuses were casually mentioned. Today I learned more and got a bonus that was 10% of my salary for the period. I just started in Q2, had I been here for the full Q1/2 I would have gotten a 20% bonus.

Hell yes.

I'm always weirded out that 1 million is commonly $1MM, for thousand thousand in Roman numerals.

Is $1M ever 1 thousand? We obviously have K for that but why the MM for million though?

Are $1M and $1m different?
