I hit a few estate sales today. Found a Quasar gm3581tq microcassette recorder boombox for $1 And a Sony fdl-22 watchman for $3 The coast air coast to coast hardware branded finger sharpener fan was $8 The watchman works but obviously there isn't any SD broadcasts. The Quasar had some old c Cell batteries that had leaked but once I scraped the contacts the tape mechanism came to life. The radio bands don't seem to work so I'm betting I'm going to need to take it apart and clean all the input switches and balance and volume sliders. Probably replace the microcassette mechanism belt as well and deep clean the battery contacts. For being a tiny microcassette based boombox It actually has quite a bit of heft to it and has dual tape speed selections and has a normal or metal tape switch so I'm betting it was very pricey back in the day. I know Quasar was originally a Motorola sub brand but it looks like it was actually made by Panasonic according to what I'm finding on the internet.

Was there music or anything of commercial significance released on microcassette? There’s a format smaller than microcassette and it’s kind of adorable? https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Picocassette (That fan is beautiful by the way)

Almost definitely not, but I'm assuming you can record from the radio onto one, and then take that around with you and your microcassette recorder. At the very least it'd sound better than parking one next to a radio and hoping it picks up alright, and if you were the sort of person to bring a recorder around with you that's better than also having to drag around a walkman while you're sat on the train or whatever.

Who remembers attaching one of these to the Radio Flyer? Or putting these in the windows every spring? We used to think we could magnetize our way to health! "The new audio patterns are coming in," they'd say, and we'd rush to the device. "The table will react if you put your hand up to it," we'd say. Nobody could keep their hand up for more than a couple seconds. I still jump whenever I hear a tube crack!

The talk of tiny cassettes reminded me of these things - did anyone else have one? The movie "cassettes" were little circular drums through which an actual film would zip through, and a bulb inside would let you see the "movie" through a little lens. I think it was probably a stocking filler when I was small, it was good fun.

teen witch posted:Was there music or anything of commercial significance released on microcassette? There was a brief attempt to make 'microcassette stereo' a thing but AFAIK there were never any prerecorded albums released for it. You can buy novelty microcassette albums on ebay now though, but they're just modern things some people are making up. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZZYpPlpD3ow There was however almost an attempt to sell prerecorded albums on the Sony NT format, which is a digital tape that's even smaller than the Picocassette https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=unj79pzEHNQ&t=263s
