I was working for Sprint when the good ol' Palm Pre came out in 2009, and they raved like it was going to be the end-all-be-all of cell phones and nothing would ever be the same. We had to go to a several hour long class on how to use it and how to present it to the customers before it hit shelves. We were busy as hell, shuffling phones from store to store, offering special bonuses depending on how many of them you sold. I hadn't been with them long at the time (and didn't stay with them long either), so my personal cell phone plan was with Verizon. It's lucky I was in the middle of a contract, because I was brainwashed into nearly dropping the early cancellation money to Verizon to get one of those goddamn things. SO glad I didn't!

mystes posted:I thought WebOS was actually supposed to be decent? Either way, nobody cared at that point and that would be reason enough to steer clear for app/compatibility reasons. The phone itself was the problem. It looked nice, but it fell apart. The screen could shatter from being in your pocket, the slide function broke half the time, the headphone jack would break.. It was real shoddy work, but it looked rather nice.

Mister Kingdom posted:When DVD recorders first came out, they sucked. I decided to roll the dice and buy this: My stepfather has two almost exactly like the one pictured, he uses them all the time! He's huge on recording movies or TV shows that he likes and passing them around the family. He's kindof an audiophile though, and he seems to be loving made of money, so maybe they aren't exactly the same..

Loquitor posted:Not obsolete at all, standard equipment for university Maths and engineering, interchangeable with the ti-84 pretty much, and really anything you need to do that is more complicated than what can be done on these, you'd probably want to use a computer with a specialised software package. Seriously. I work at an engineering firm, and nearly every engineer has one of these or something comparable sitting on their desk.

Looking back, it's funny how everyone thought phones would get smaller and smaller, when the reality became everyone is trying to get the biggest screen they possibly can without it weighing down their pockets too much.

SimplyCosmic posted:Obsolete technology can lead to obsolete furniture. Same with those old 90's computer desks that have the tall cabinet for the PC tower (that I don't actually have my tower in), the sliding shelf for the keyboard (which is cluttered with books and papers since nobody on the planet could type comfortably as low as this one is), and a raised platform for a single monitor. I just had a significant monitor upgrade, so now I have a passable backup monitor that I could use to run a dual-screen setup at home, but the old hand-me-down desk I'm using just isn't built for it.

Glottis posted:I think that was the first "slider" phone I ever remember seeing. I loved that format, at least back in the days before everyone wanted smartphones. I remember a phone that was out while I was still trying to sell phones, back in 2008-2009ish. I want to say it was by Pantech, and it slid both directions- up for numbers, over for keyboard. That was a thick loving phone, and I don't think we could ever successfully sell it.

My biggest problem is that I live in North Carolina and it gets really hot in the summer. I have all the plug-ins, but I don't want to carry an iPod around in my pocket, but I also don't want to leave it to cook in the car all day. On top of that, and the interface in my car is way too clunky and unintuitive. Mine is a 2010 with a lovely interface, her's is a 2008 with loving Bluetooth that streams audio from her phone. Go figure.

Pocket Billiards posted:I work in 3D CAD. Solidworks, ProEngineer, etc. Trackballs, the crazy 3D controllers that suction cup to the desktop and all that are just gimmicks. The joke is that they're always the lucky door prize at software convention, launch events for new software releases, etc. Ugh, yeah, gently caress using a trackball in AutoCAD. I can see how it would work if you got REALLY good with it, but I'll take a nice high DPI mouse any day.

madlilnerd posted:I don't like fingerprint recognition- what if someone hacked the fingerprint database and stole your fingerprint and 3D printed it onto a glove and went around committing crimes with your fingerprint left at the scene? I've always wondered what would happen if you had a fingerprint scanner on your computer and you injured that finger to the point of it being unrecognizable- even if just for a short time. I sliced my left index finger open with a paring knife while cutting cheese a few weeks ago, there's no way I would have been able to scan it.
