Between VHS and DVD there was Video-CD. The funny thing was that compression artefacts and low resolution made for a worse picture than a good VHS tape. Few players exist.

It was an attempt to muscle in to the market the N-Gage was supposedly creating, at the time (2005) it was seen as pretty feature rich supporting a sim card, GPS, 3mp camera and bluetooth.
This was seven years ago, and there were even dedicated shops (well, at least one) that sold nothing but this device and the handful of games it had. Less than 30k units have been sold though it was a very powerful device for its time. Best selling game was "sticky balls". Haha.
