One of the easiest things to do with a short story is wait to hit that final draft or revision for a few weeks while you work on something else. At least for me, it no longer feels like I wrote it and it's easier to chop it up and rework it. If I need motivation while working on a longer work I open up the 500,000 word novel I wrote when I was fourteen, pick a random page, and start reading. Usually I feel better in a few minutes, given that my current work is no longer anywhere near that terrible.

Nothing is mandatory, but it's probably a good idea. Do you have the first draft done? The first time I ever wrote a novel I rewrote it so heavily it wasn't even really the same thing.

Quick and dirty research says an M67 fragmentation grenade (which is what people usually mean when they say 'grenade') won't go off until the "spoon" flies off. The pin doesn't light the fuse, it holds the metal cover in place and when the cover detaches a small percussion cap lights the fuse. You could just stick the pin back in.

Unless the scene is straight up pornographic, a blow-by-blow should be avoided. Sex scenes fall under the same general guidelines as battle and combat scenes, as discussed in the previous thread. It's much better to sort of set things up and let the reader's imagination focus on the gory details, as it were, while bringing across the emotional significance for the characters and the plot. There's also an issue of context; detailed blow-by-blow sex scenes work in erotica because the audience is going in expecting that. If you're not in the "mood" it's going to sound ridiculous. Generally, the harder a writer tries to make a sex scene poetic or tries to write it very seriously, the more ridiculous it will be.

CB_Tube_Knight posted:Going to ignore Nano like I do every year. I can't afford to wait for November. I'm tempted to do it just for the novelty of it, but to be honest, 50,000 seems a little short for me, in terms of a monthly goal. I may participate solely for the challenge of working on one thing at a time.

A Peacemaker and a Chevelle. Alternately, a Taser and a Prius.
