As for Battler's name, I've seen one explanation for it that sounds vaguely plausible. It is, however, kinda tied in with one of the game's biggest plot twists. And still doesn't explain why the hell his parents thought it was a good idea.

Given the mystery novel homages, I kind of figured Battler's name was a really obscure Agatha Christie reference. One of her detectives, Hercule Poirot, had an assisstant called Hastings. I dimly remember one of the books/tv-adaptations mentioning his nickname in his youth was "Battler". Battler Hastings.

Yeah, it's terrible.
