Eternal Commissioner of the Super League. A new avatar. A new age, of the same old embittered Smasher that failed to escape the bonds of the SL, FM3, Johnny Hopp and Eri Yoshida "The Knuckle Princess". "The flames of Smasher's ire scorch the skies... Igniting St. Bellhorn's funeral pyre."
I come bearing a terrifying message of hope!

People of the expansion class, in a certain sense, I am happy to see you be so numerous. But in a much more real sense, I can't help be feel as if you are a bit too numerous.

Therefore, I give you the following options:

Expand the Super-League to 30 teams

Pros
-Everyone gets a chance at the full Super-League season!

Cons
-Significantly more work for me
-Most of the worst teams wouldn't be competitive anyway

Keep the Super-League at 24 teams

Pros
-Keeps me (relatively) sane
-Ensures only the strong survive

Cons
-Will kill between six and eight teams before they get the Super-League
-Requires the operation of a second Gauntlet to whittle down the Expansion teams to a more reasonable number

So, 24 or 30!

As you might have inferred, I'm of two minds on the subject, hence my decision to have you guys decide for yourselves.

The consensus is that the weak must be culled so that the strong may thrive. I approve of this development, and I'll figure out exactly what the format of the Super-Gauntlet will be at some point.

Okay, so, it'll still be a couple of days before the Expansion Cup is ready to start. In the meantime, why not take the Official Super-League Personality Test that, for all you know, is very important to league operations and definitely just something to keep the thread busy for a bit!

Let's begin!

Question 1

I want my team...

A. To be champions!

B. To be remembered.

C. To not completely suck.

D. To prove them wrong.

Question 2

The core of a successful Super-League team is...

A. Its bats

B. Its pitching

C. Its owner's cunning

D. Its heart

Question 3

Your team is middling. But, if you take a certain risk, it may become a contender, or may be relegated after the season. If you do nothing, your team will probably survive, but certainly won't win a championship. Do you...

A. Take the risk! Death of glory!

B. Hold off on the risk! They'll be time enough to perfect the team in the offseason!

C. I don't know, I just don't know!

D. Oh, God! What do I do? Tell me what to do!

Question 4

Is Marauder evil?

A. 'Good' and 'evil' are moral constructs that have little meaning inside the world of the Super-League, where cooperation is effectively impossible and one team's survival requires the death of another. To be 'good' in such a world is to be suicidal, to be 'evil' to merely desire to continue to live, and so the words lose all meaning. Yes, Marauder is 'evil', and we should all aspire to be so.

B. Marauder is an elemental force. A human being can be 'good' or 'evil', but you would not call a tornado or a volcano or a meteor streaking towards the ground to be 'good' or 'evil'. These forces will assuredly cause pain, cause suffering, but they cannot be 'evil' for it. Marauder is like a walking hurricane. He destroys, he ruins, but he cannot help this any more than the water can help being wet.

C. Nietzsche wrote of a society that grow decrepit as its morals and ethics lose meaning the light of technological and societal progress. These values, in this new age, tie down mankind and prevent its progress. Even worse, their decay leads to nihilism and the loss of all values. In such a situation, it is imperative on a great person to rise above the herd and their conceptions of 'good' and 'evil' to assert new values to form the foundation of a new society. Marauder merely wishes to save the Super-League from such a dreary fate, even if he is branded 'evil' by the decaying culture he seeks to transform.

D. Yeah, man, dude's totally evil.

Question 5

The thesis of Moneyball is that it is incumbent on ballclubs to forever seek out market inefficiencies in order to give their team the best return on investment. What is the greatest market inefficiency in the Super-League today?

A. Defense. Too many teams have put absolutely brutal defenders in the field and then been shocked when their pitching falters as a result.

B. Contact hitting. Given the abundance of good pitching, especially from the deadball era, drawing walks in considerably harder than it is in real life. On the other hand, contact hitting appears to be much less affected by the superior pitching in the Super-League.

C. Relievers. While relief pitching is hard to predict, it is not impossible to predict, and performs an essential role in a league where the hitting in supercharged.

D. If I know what it is, wouldn't it be important for me not to publicize that information?

Question 6

My team sucks. What the gently caress went wrong?

A. I hosed up.

B. It's just bad luck.

C. Smasher's out to get me.

D. All part of the plan!

Question 7

The best player of all time was...

A. Babe Ruth

B. Walter Johnson

C. Josh Gibson

D. Ted Williams

E. Write-in

Question 8

My ideal castle is...

A. In a abandoned land, devoid of people, but full of memories of times long past.

B. A mighty keep that overlooks my lands and reminds my people of the power of their lord.

C. Atop a floating island that glides along with the win, never stopping in any place for too long.

D. Inside a mountain, mostly hidden from view and wholly impregnable for any would wish to take it from me.

Question 9

The biggest Hall of Fame Snub is...

A. Tim Raines

B. Alan Trammell

C. Jeff Bagwell

D. Write-in

Question 10

The best sci-fi franchise is...

A. Star Trek

B. Star Wars

C. Battlestar Galactica

D. Doctor Who

E. Write-in

Question 11

Should Chicago forgive Steve Bartman?

A. Yes!

B. No!

C. You're totally going to kill all of teams that picked 'yes', aren't you?

Question 12

If the Sun is one, and the Moon is two, then what is the Earth?

A. Zero

B. Three

C. Five

D. Thursday

Question 13

Will the new season of Community suck?

A. 'Suck' is a strong word, it probably won't be quite as good, as it depended a lot on the sensibilities of Dan Harmon to work properly, but it will still be competent enough. It'll still be canceled, though.

B. It will. The essential problem with Community is that, on paper, it's not a particularly strong premise for a series, take away the guy who made it into something more, and you've got something that's going to go off of the rails, and fast.

C. Hey, Community already had something like 70 episodes! Where I come from, that's an insanely long run for a show!

D. I watch The Big Bang Theory!

Question 14

Out of all of the idiotic characters Smasher has created, the one I'd want most on my team is...

A. St. Mark Bellhorn

B. "The Chosen" Dunn

C. Eri Yoshida

D. Is death an option? It is? Then I'll choose death.

Question 15

What was the point of this?

A. It's complicated!

B. Smasher is desperately trying to keep this thread active!

C. Smasher's trying to get inside our heads! Don't you understand, this is all part of his evil plan! We must stop him!

D. Smasher's got to know exactly how much lunacy the lot of you can tolerate.

Bonus Essay Question

You are John Constitution. The year is 2687 and the world is once again in crisis. The raiders of New Dakota have stolen the Master Infosphere of Third Milwaukee. With the city only five days away from crashing into Lake Huron-Michigan, it is up to you to retrieve the Infosphere.

Making matters worse, one raider captured in the attack has revealed that he and his associates were working for Cardinal Severn, the sovereign lord of NeoCanada. Clearly, by destroying Milwaukee he hopes that the passes of Sault Ste. Marie will be left unguarded and his robo-legions will easily be able invade and occupy the entire region.

To the best of your knowledge, the raiders are currently making their way across the rad plains of Iowa, inhabited solely by commutants, a vicious breed of degenerates who have adopted Marxism in order to cope with the harsh realities of living in such a blasted land.

What do you do? What do you do?

For the purposes of this question, assume that your Hover-Mazda has been fully repaired after the Rockford incident.

THE Effort Post

Okay, here's the first draft of a list of all of the Hall of Famers ever to play in the Super-League. It's not complete, and it only goes up to Super-League IV, but I'll get around to finishing it one of these days.

Smasher Dynamo
Oct 16, 2008

Eternal Commissioner of the Super League. A new avatar. A new age, of the same old embittered Smasher that failed to escape the bonds of the SL, FM3, Johnny Hopp and Eri Yoshida "The Knuckle Princess". "The flames of Smasher's ire scorch the skies... Igniting St. Bellhorn's funeral pyre."
The Hall of Fame post has finally been brought up to date. You'll notice that none of the expansion teams are included.

That's because until you survive the Expansion Gauntlet, you haven't really owned a Super-League team yet.

Anyway, I'm told the first update will be up shortly...ish.

tatankatonk

Make sure you sim day-by-day, otherwise the AI will mess up the rotations and lineups.

Also, make the Taggart League no-DH going forward, you can change it in the league setting menu.

The Cultists-Landers trade is approved.

mrnoun posted:

Cthulhu accepted already, but I'm a big Lance Parrish fan. Also, if you want to do me a solid and swap shortstops, I'd be happy to work something out:

Luna Landers offer:
1984 Cal Ripken (he'd autoheal for you because of the trade)
1946 Bob Feller
1946 Sherm Lollar (so you won't be shorthanded at catcher)

Portland Bulldogs offer:
1984 Alan Trammell (to replace injured Ripken)
1984 Lance Parrish
Whichever of your starting pitchers you were planning to replace, so I won't be shorthanded at pitcher (Derringer or Walters?)
Should we both survive, you send me 1996 Scott Brosius between seasons as a player to be named later, because Feller's better than Parrish.

Why are you doing this? Ripken is only out 19 days, and you already have a bunch of players than can handle shortstop in the interim.

And you just traded for a catcher, which doesn't exactly make this the most sensible time to trade for another one.

And Feller is much, much better than Derringer and Walters.

And Brosius is useless in the Super-LEague.

I guess I'm just confused.

Good news! Thanks to Cthulhu making a script that automates the update process, I've decided to cancel the Expansion Gauntlet and just expand the Super-League.

Why don't we wait for Angry_ed to accept the trade in-thread before I sign off on this latest trade that appears to serve no benefit other than making me do more work.

I don't know, I guess it puts Dave Kingman in the next dispersal draft too, but mainly nothing.

The Super-Official Expansion Cup Power Ranking!

1. Polyarny Postmodernists (35-19)

I'm trying to understand your team. I mean, I could say you're using a bunch of slap hitters, but then you've got Barry Bonds. I could say you abuse deadball pitchers, but you're using Tudor and Reuschel. You say that you've got a plan, and I'm not sure that you do, I just think you built a strong team.

2. Ry'leh Cultists (32-21)

Amazingly, trading for Johnson and Mathewson has solved about all of your pitching problems. All it took was finding someone willing to trade you two of the top ten pitchers ever.

3. Leprechauns (32-21)

If Larry Dierker keeps this up, then something has gone terribly wrong with the Mogul engine. In fact, I'm skeptical of just about your entire rotation.

And you need to replace Menke. I was going to say something about Kennedy too, but then I noticed that Carter is rotting on your bench. If you've got to use one used-up catcher from the Giants, choose him.

4. Barrow Daydreamers (32-23)

There's no way you're going to do nearly this well in the Super-League if you can't get a better shortstop and outfielders. Also, look at how well Jim Sundberg is doing. Take it in, take it all in, because he will never, ever, ever hit this well in the Super-League ever again!

5. Lombard Street Gumshoes (32-23)

Why won't you listen to me. I tell you Ron Gant isn't good enough for the Super-League. I tell you that Mike Schmidt in 1989 is about done. But you don't listen. You just don't listen.

6. Vice City Good Eggs (29-25)

Wait, is Jesse Barfield really at third base? If he is, move him immediately. McManus and Moseby were bound to be duds, anyway. Better you find out now rather than in the Super-League.

Now, as for the matter of Jimmy Key? Well, where did you think "Jimmy loving Key" came from?

7. Ted Sox (29-26)

Okay, Chapman might be a bust. At the very least, he shouldn't be batting leadoff. And at what point do you give up on Johnny Sain? These are questions you'll have to answer for yourself.

I was going to say something about Franco, Rodriguez and Gonzalez's OBP, but then I remembered that's just the kind of players they were.

8. Norfolk Splinter Cells (29-26)

I know that Vaughn Xenopolos is just a filler player but...don't you feel the urge to put him into your rotation anyway?

Oh, and Donie Bush had no power even for a deadball middle infielder. So, uh, replace him.

9. Hakata Runnin' Ramen (29-27)

I guess Dale Murphy thinks it's 1993 rather than 1979. Not sure what to do about that, really.

Your rotation needs work. Niekro can be good in the right situation, but I'm not sure this is it. Ken Hill is not Super-League quality.

Oh, and replace Kelly Johnson when you get a chance.

10. Rated-R Superstars (28-26)

You relied on A.J. Burnett and Vernon Wells to be helpful? Hasn't the constant misery of the Blue Jays taught you anything? Why not bring in B.J. Ryan to-

Wait, you're actually using B.J. Ryan? Five owners and you're using B.J. Ryan? Come on!

11. Great Googly-Mooglies (27-27)

Justin Verlander and Bernie Williams were both tainted by their time with the Bronies, and now they are poisoning your team. Amputate!

12. St. Paul Bearers (27-28)

Okay, well, clearly Doyle Alexander isn't going to work out for you and I'm not sure why you thought it ever was going too. For that matter, I don't see Claude Passeau's future being particularly right. Also, you have Craig Biggio and are starting Stanky at second. I'm not sure why you guys have decided to do that, but you should stop it immediately.

13. Madison Mudholes (26-28)

Is Neil Walker really playing shortstop? That doesn't seem right.

Anyway, tatankatonk told you to not use McCutcheon, but you're only other center fielder is Devon White. Now, I don't know if you're old enough to remember Devon White or "Devo" as wikipedia says he was called, but he couldn't hit at all. So stick with McCutcheon.

14. Oxbridge Mathematicians (26-28)

Are you using Buster Posey? If you aren't, you should use Buster Posey.

Beyond that, I don't like Wheat because he has no power, fortunately, I happen to know a guy who does have power that may or may not be chemically augmented. They call him "Canseco". If Sandoval doesn't get better soon, I'd consider replacing him with Lowell.

As for Beckett's disappointing start, well, I'm pretty sure there are support groups all over New England that help people deal with the emotional damage that that causes.

15. Poughkeepsie Superbas (25-28)

Well, CF was going to be a problem. We knew that going in, but now that Hamilton is out for the rest of the cup, I think you might as well just give Monday the job for now and plan to draft a center fielder in the first round of the dispersal draft.

Oh, and Luis Aparicio still can't hit. This should not be new to anyone.

Hunter's problems are related to the fact that he pitched to a lot of guys like Aparicio in a lot of pitcher's parks, which taught him the lesson that throwing a pitch over the plate in order to get ahead in the count was an acceptable strategy. In the Super-League, it really isn't. Still, see if he can turn it around.

16. Second City Saints (25-29)

Bellhorn should not be a starter for you! And I don't trust any of your starters besides Spahn and Martinez! And your bullpen is terrible!

17. Portland Bulldogs (23-30)

You've got weird problems. None of your batters are doing so terribly that you absolutely need to replace them, except for Molitor and Stargell, but you can't give up on them this early. So, I'm not sure there's a lot you can do. I guess use Parker more, but that's the only easy fix I can think of.

Uhle and Walters are problems, but you might as well give them a bit more time to figure it out before you ditch them.

18. Philadelphia Longshots (22-33)

Rico Petrocelli is roughly ten million billion times better than Mark Ellis. He shall be your new starting second baseman!

Oh, and your bullpen is terrible, but that can't be news for you. I know, I know, Jim Konstanty won the MVP in 1950, but the game is looking at his career as a whole, and it is not impressed.

Beyond that, I don't know, maybe try Ace Wilson instead of Seminick. I mean, the man's nickname was "Ace". Logically, he has to be good!

19. Antarctic Unspecifieds (17-37)

Okay, all you need is a new pitching staff, a new left fielder, a new first baseman and you're good to go!

20. Idaho Potatoes (17-37)

Your roster is full of baffling decisions. Johnny Sain as a starter. The omission of Gregg Olson in favor of Frohwith. Morales as your starting first baseman. Napoli as your DH. Izturis as your second baseman. Bring Rizzuto in as your second baseman. Bring in Tartabull as your DH. Find someone willing to trade you a first baseman. Do these things now.

I already approved this insanity in the other thread, but I'll reiterate that the trade is accepted and fundamentally idiotic for the Juggernauts here as well.

The Memento Mori Division was, for only time in the first four seasons of the Super-League, truly competitive for most of the season. The Skyhawks and Senadores were basically deadlocked for most of the season before the Skyhawks took their first step to becoming a dynasty by finally getting separation from the Senadores towards the end of the season. The Blind Men made it to third place entirely on the back of their pitching, as their impotent offense became the stuff of legends. Meanwhile, the Fighting Mongooses suffered injury after injury, becoming the only team in their division to be relegated.

The Vae Victis Division in Super-League I was a disaster. Out of the four teams, exactly zero managed to amass a winning record. Instead, the four fatally flawed teams lost, and lost a lot until the Switchblades, despite a terrible offense, somehow managed to win the division. The Juggernauts, starting a proud tradition of underachieving, ended up in second place, while the Unspecifieds had a neat gimmick, but not much else. Oh, and the Clues were there, but even I can't remember anything about them.

The Mark Bellhorn Division featured the most competitive division race in the Super-League, as the Mooglies and Fillies battled for almost the entire season before the Mooglies faded late. The division also featured a tight race between the Crabs and Bangers to survive relegation even though, as it turned out, both teams were able to survive. A lot of that was due to the Sharks, who gave both teams many teams in the dying weeks of the season on their way to the worst record in Super-League history.

My opinion of the Superstars in particular is, I believe, well known. Let's see what we can do.

Well, since you guys are so deadset against them, may I offer a chance to make things a bit more interesting?

How about we pit the Marauder faction against the Superstars Faction. Whichever faction wins, all of their teams will be immune from relegation that season. Whichever faction loses, all of their teams get sent to the Gauntlet Round 1.

How do we decide who wins? Simple. Which ever faction has the better overall winning percentage. Right now, the factions would look like (and we could adjust this):

The Superstars LLC
Rated R Superstars
Ryleh Cultists
Great Googly Mooglies
Portland Bulldogs
Straight Edge Society

Marauder's Marauders
Fukuoka Finger-Bangers
Finger Lakes Phoenixes
Norfolk Splinter Cells
Luna Landers (if they survive)
??????

Is this a terrible idea? It just might be, as many of my late night ideas are, but it was just a thought.

The Memento Mori Division race in Super-League II wasn't so much a race as a very long massacre. The Skyhawks, defending champions at that point, made a mockery of the other teams in the division, winning the Memento Mori title by twenty games. Truly, these Skyhawks were at the height of their powers. The Blind Men returned for another run, but still had not solved their offensive woes, and were summarily relegated at the end of the season. Both the Philosophers and Penguins tried, but were terrible, terrible teams.

In Super-League I, the Vae Victis was a joke, with no team finishing over .500. In Super-League II, the Vae Victis was the best division in the Super-League, with all four teams finishing above .500 on the year. The Vigilantes, winners of the first Expansion Cup, came out firing and captured the division title in convincing fashion, and, just for this one season, becoming the Super-League team of the future. The Riots and Murderbots battled all season long for the wildcard, with the Murderbots eventually winning in a one-game playoff at the end of the regular season. The Switchblades, despite improving their record, fell to fourth place on the season and were retired when lonelywurm, their owner, was forced to return to his native Canada to fight in the great Battle of Thunder Bay, and you all know how that turned out.

The Sic Transit Vir Division was created in Super-League II after the expansion to 24 teams. The Finger-Bangers, after a season of preparation, were ready to be competitors and ran away with the division title. The Juggernauts continued their proud tradition of underachievement by getting sent to the Gauntlet, and then somehow emerging as a survivor, even if they were still not in the Finger-Bangers' class. The Senadores were a surviving team that tried to rebuild itself between seasons with disastrous results. Lastly, the Indians' logo got the Super-League banned in India.

The Mark Bellhorn Division was in a state of flux in Super-League II. The Mooglies had retired, leaving the Queens Mercuries as their effective successors in challenging the Fillies' dominance. The Mercuries, however, could do little to stop the Fillies from winning the division for the second straight year, though they did manage to get the wildcard. The Crabs, trying to avoid relegation for a second season, could not quite manage to escape this time, being relegated in the final round for the Gauntlet. Finally, the Bronies brought new meaning to the word 'futility', losing 103 games to be the worst team in Super-League II.

It was the Season of Blood in the Senor Goodtimes Division. Fortified by a number of trades, the Blood Sox dominated their division, winning 101 games and clearing the division by 19 games. The Bobbleheads and Drinkers both hovered around .500, but were able to avoid the Gauntlet and so continued onto .500 to lick their wounds and figure out how to deal with the Blood Sox beast. The Dervishes, not quite as lucky, tumbled into the Gauntlet and were lost forever.

The Norris-Smythe Division was created to accommodate the expansion of the Super-League to 24 teams after Super-League I. It was originally named the "Fallen Moogs" division after the Mooglies, who had been retired after Super-League I. However, when it became clear that The Goog would return for Super-League III, it was renamed to the "Norris-Smythe". The Eazy W's, the sole veteran team in the division, walked away with the championship even as ownership struggles loomed for the franchise. The Sonics, on the other hand, provided glimpses of the contender they would become, fighting the W's strongly for the first two-thirds of the season before falling short and being forced to fight in the final round of the Gauntlet (which their owner, Koop, had invented) in order to survive. But not all stories were as happy. The Goose Eggs had been finalists in the Expansion Cup, but found that their commitment to speed and defense was like bringing a knife to the gun fight that was the Super-League. The Suicidal Tendencies are virtually forgotten today, with their most meaningful contribution to the league being an increased scrutiny for deals made by teams headed to the Gauntlet.

The Skyhawks won. They always won this division. At the time, any other outcome seemed...unthinkable. Of course, their championship run would come to an end this year, but that didn't stop them from taking their third straight Memento Mori Division title. In the early parts of the season, it appeared as if the Oyster Cult Blues might prove to be real rivals, but, as time went on, it was clear there weren't in the same class as the Skyhawks. The Freewheelers and Forgettables did show some moxie, but that wasn't enough to save them from being one-and-done in the Gauntlet.

Super-League II was the finest moment for the Vae Victis Division. Super-League III was a nightmare. The Vigilantes and Riots, two teams who had seem poised to be long-term contenders in the Super-League, both came up lame in this season, and were both relegated in the late rounds of the Gauntlet. The Googles, a misbegotten team, were out of the division race by June. In such a situation, all the Murderbots had to do was play semi-competently in order to survive, and that they did, becoming the only member of the division to survive the season.

The Sic Transit Vir Division featured a resumption of the Unicorns-Bangers rivalry from Super-League I. The Unicorns, reborn, and more than a little angry at being relegated by the Bangers in the first place, tried to destroy the Bangers in revenge. But the Bangers were at the height of their powers, and were able to win their second straight Sic Transit Vir championship. The Unicorns were forced to settle for the wildcard. Further down the standings, the Juggernauts underachieved again, surprising no one. In the cellar of the division, the Aquamen managed to survive through grit, determination, and Lou Gehrig.

No team from the Mark Bellhorn Division survived Super-League III, because all four teams of self-inflicted wounds. The Sharks made a series of horrible trades that left them broken and relegated. The Goog had an excellent team in the Great Googly-Mooglies, but traded them in for the Greater Googly-Mooglies who were not nearly as competent. Two seasons of questionable roster decisions left the Fillies vulnerable, and spelled their doom. The Mercuries should have survived, but Senerio challenged the Macho Men in a career-threatened series that destroyed his team. One can only hope that future generations of owners learn from these mistakes, or else this division was nothing but a senseless tragedy.

After two seasons of the Blood Sox and Bobbleheads fighting for supremacy in the division, the Honolulu Lava Flow broke the deadlock by surging to a division title. That left the Blood Sox and Bobbleheads fighting in a one-game playoff for a wildcard slot that would let the winner escape the Gauntlet. The Bobbleheads, survivors to the last, won, and continued on to Super-League IV. As for the Blood Sox, they had never recovered from their upset at the hands of the Mercuries the prior season, and died in the final round of the Gauntlet. The fate of the Drinkers' was even stranger, as their owner simply disappeared one day, never to be heard from again, leading to the retirement of the team.

The Eazy W's won the Norris-Smythe Division in Super-League III, but it wasn't easy. The SuperSonics, after a disappointing campaign in Super-League II, battled them hard throughout the season, and managed to take the Eazy W's to a one-game playoff for the Norris-Smythe title that, alas, they could not capture this time around. The Unspecifieds burst onto the league for an encore performance, but did not last long. As for the Masochists? Well, like Zack Ryder, they just weren't built for long-term success.

With all due respect to the Blues, the Crabs, and the Jerks, this season was about the Skyhawks. They had been beaten decisively in the playoffs of Super-League III, and there was some question whether their time had passed. The regular season was a formality for them. They crushed the opposition and won the Memento Mori Division for the fourth straight time. The playoffs were the true test. But the Dynamo League was in a state of flux at the time, and this too offered no real challenge for the Skyhawks. They crushed the Oranges who were simply not ready for such a challenge in their first season. More frustrating for the Skyhawks, the Unicorns were eliminated in the first round of the playoffs, preventing the revenge the Skyhawks so eagerly sought. Instead, the Murderbots advanced, and also proved no match for the Skyhawks. Finally, in the Super-League Finals, the Skyhawks found an opponent to their liking. The new Gander Doppel-Bangers, created by Marauder, had won 105 games in their first season, the most ever in Super-League history. If any team could ever give the Skyhawks a run for their money, it was them. But, like so many other teams, the Doppels folded under the Skyhawks' attack, giving them their third championship, but leaving them in a quandary. There were no more challenges for them to find in the Super-League. No one was going to come and dethrone them. And so, with nothing left to fight for, the Skyhawks challenged the Macho Men in a career-threatening series. And they lost. And they were retired forever. But at least they went down fighting.

As for the other three teams? Well, they got relegated in the Gauntlet. That's about it.

The Vae Victis Division was in a state of transition. The Murderbots, clearly an old guard team at this point, were stagnant, but still powerful, and were able to win the division for the second straight year. To do so, however, they had to hold off the Expansion Florida Oranges, who made a strong statement in their first season, winning the wildcard. On the other hand, the Aquamen, having barely survived the Gauntlet last time, stumbled to a .500 record this season and got relegated. As for the Dervishes, well, at least better days were ahead for Beet...

The Sic Transit Vir division was in a weird spot in Super-League IV. The Bangers had won it the previous season, but had split off half of their players to the Gander Doppel-Bangers, and were weakened. The Unicorns took the opportunity to take the division title and send the Bangers to the Gauntlet, though their rivals survived. The Villains weren't great, but did inspire an obit that nearly killed me, so that's something. The Communists proved that in addition to not being a viable form of government, it was also not a viable method of Super-League team management.

The Mark Bellhorn Division was terrible in Super-League III, and that was blood in the water to veteran owners. factorialite, whose teams had been stuck behind the Finger-Bangers for two straight seasons, applied for a transfer to the Mark Bellhorn Division, hoping to finally find a division they could win. And then, in some sort of cosmic irony, Marauder split off the Doppel-Bangers, who also went to the Bellhorn Division, which left the Juggernauts once again stuck being a Bangers team. The Leprechauns, meanwhile, discovered the magic of Johnny Hopp, a magical rabbit that could play baseball. Now, he couldn't play it very well, as he lacked opposable thumbs and only weighed about four pounds. Still, he did somehow lead the Leprechauns out of the Gauntlet. The Orchids also survived the Gauntlet, thanks to...I have no idea what actually, but survive they did!

What the gently caress happened to the Senor Goodtimes Division? Well, it's complicated. The Riots had a ton of injury problems, although, as they played in Detroit, home of Robocop, that was probably unavoidable. The Hurricanes were kind of a disaster, although, as they played in New Orleans, that was probably unavoidable too. The Lave Flows' owner just kind of quit his team because he had better stuff to do with his time, although, as they were based in Honolulu, that was probably unavoidable as well. That left the Bobbleheads, who won the division by default, which, to be fair, was the greatest victory that a team based on the Cubs had ever achieved.

The rivalry between the Sonics and the Eazy W's continued in Super-League IV. The battle lasted all season and, once again, led to a one-game playoff between the two teams for the Norris-Smythe Division title. And, once again, the Eazy W's left the Sonics beaten and humiliated. Still, the Sonics had a good enough record to avoid the Gauntlet, and vowed that they would make one last stand against the W's in Super-League V. As for the Cutthroats, there great expectations for the team. They had won the Expansion Cup and had Babe Ruth. Still, it never quite worked out for them, and they stumbled into the Gauntlet, there to die. Oh, and the Homers were there too. They did nothing of import before getting relegated.

Let's hope a ticking clock makes this league work a bit faster:

If the Expansion Cup is not concluded by the end of the playoffs of Super-League VI, then the draft order will be set by the results of the last posted Expansion Cup update, and the four best teams will battle in a four-team mini-season for the championship!

And now, something you'll like a bit better:

Dispersal Draft VI Information

These rankings are all based on my own personal view of the players. You might feel differently, and you might be right.

Catchers
1. 19?? Josh Gibson (NEW)
2. 1951 Yogi Berra (FHQ)
3. 1998 Ivan Rodriguez (DRC)
4. 2001 Ivan Rodriguez (SJT)
5. 1984 Lance Parrish (MCB)
6. 1943 Bill Dickey (SJT)
7. 2011 Victor Martinez (FHQ)
8. 1920 Wally Schang (NEW)
9. 1965 Earl Battey (MCB)
10. 1959 Smoky Burgess (HIL)
11. 1960 Sherm Lollar (HIL)
12. 1935 Spuds McKenzie Spud Davis (DRC)
13. 1989 Brian Harper (DRC)

Sure Things

Josh Gibson is the best player in the draft. If you have the first pick in the draft, you should take him, unless you have a really great idea for your team's obit, and don't want to have to wait too long for me to write it. Yogi Berra is also pretty good, even if he isn't Josh Gibson. He also bats left-handed, which is always nice.

Helpful Players

Los Dos Ivan Rodriguezes are decent pickups. They can hit for contact and are great defensively. Of course, they don't have great power, and they can't draw walks, but you can live with that out of your catchers. Lance Parrish has power, patience and isn't a disaster behind the plate, and that sounds pretty good to me. Bill Dickey would be rated higher, except he's kind of old for a catcher, and I'm not sure what catching more than 100 or so games is going to do to his knees. He might be okay for full-time duty, though. Victor Martinez can hit, but well, he can't really field by 2011. Still, he can really hit, so if you don't really care about defense...

Filler That Won't Kill You

Wally Schang has no power, but is decent at everything else. Then again, having you catcher hit for five home runs across the entire season might drive you completely insane. Earl Battey is a decent hitter for a catcher, but isn't really a top-flight defensive catcher, and is probably best as part of a platoon.

Dregs

Burgess and Lollar are only helpful as platoon pieces and, even then, aren't that helpful. Spud Davis's name is "Spud". Can you really trust a guy named "Spud"? Brian Harper can't field and isn't even that good of a catcher.

First Basemen
1. 1962 Willie McCovey (HIL)
2. 1939 Jimmie Foxx (NEW)
3. 2004 Jeff Bagwell (FHQ)
4. 1987 Eddie Murray (SJT)
5. 2001 Rafael Palmeiro (SJT)
6. 1995 Mo Vaughn (NEW)
7. 1989 Kent Hrbek (DRC)
8. 1936 Dolph Camilli (SJT)
9. 2009 Billy Butler (MCB)
10. 1972 Ron Fairly (FHQ)
11. 1935 Ripper Collins (DRC)
12. 1906 Frank Chance (FHQ)
13. 1959 Dick Stuart (HIL)

Sure Things

Willie McCovey really deserves a chance to play for a good team. He's been a bit spotty in the Super-League, but that's mainly because owners keep jerking him around. gently caress, he was once traded straight-up for Orlando Hudson. Still, he's a mortal lock to hit 25 home runs, which is drat good in the Super-League.

Helpful Players

Jeff Bagwell should be good, even if he was almost done by 2004. Jimmie Foxx is basically in the same boat, and is a worse fielder to boot. He can still rake, but is probably better off as a DH. Eddie Murray and Rafael Palmeiro are both solid options at first base. Palmeiro has no chance of repeating his numbers from Super-League VI, but will give you decent production if you put him at DH.

Filler that Won't Kill You

Mo Vaughn might actually be good, he was MVP in 1995, after all, but I don't know that I really trust him to be. Kent Hrbek will give you mid-range power for a first baseman, and a decent, if not great OBP.

Dregs

Dolph Camilli is young, and probably not good enough to start. Billy Butler is okay, but he's not Super-League material. Ron Fairly isn't a bad bench player, because he can also play in the corner outfield slots, but he definitely isn't a starter. 90% of the value of Ripper Collins is in his nickname. Frank Chance is interesting, in the sense that it's interesting to have a first baseman that won't hit more than five home runs in a season, but not useful. Dick Stuart is a hitter whose other skills were so terrible that he was out of the league within a decade.

Second Basemen
1. 1975 Joe Morgan (NEW)
2. 2004 Jeff Kent (FHQ)
3. 1939 Bobby Doerr (NEW)
4. 1949 Red Schoendienst (SJT)
5. 1960 Nellie Fox (HIL)
6. 1926 Tony Lazzeri (DRC)
7. 2004 Craig Biggio (FHQ)
8. 1982 Joe Morgan (HIL)
9. 2002 Ray Durham (SJT)
10. 1966 Davey Johnson (DRC)
11. 1972 Ron Hunt (FHQ)

Sure things

Joe Morgan is a sure thing unless you're expecting unrealistic things from him. He's not going to hit .300, and probably won't come close, but he's a great defender, draws a ton of walks and has a decent amount of pop for a middle infieder. He will help your team, even if it doesn't always look like he is.

Helpful Players

Jeff Kent has the most power of any batter on this list by a big margin. That said, he's not a great defender, and he's also not a very good contact hitters. Still, a Super-League second baseman that can hit between 15-20 home runs is worth a shot. Bobby Doerr isn't great defensively. He doesn't have much power. He isn't going to draw an enormous amount of walks. But he's still a drat fine hitter.

Filler that won't kill you

Red Schoendienst is okay. Not great, not terrible, just okay. That still probably represents a step up from what you're using. Nellie Fox's offensive numbers will make you want to hurl yourself out of a window, but he's got a great glove that makes up for most of it. Tony Lazzeri is very young, and that might make him a bit erratic, but he's a great hitter for his position. Biggio and old Morgan are decent, but a middle infielder in their late 30s isn't exactly optimal. I'm not sure that it's realistic to expect a full season from either of the two, but they'd make great backups/platoon partners. Ray Durham won't kill your team. He probably won't help much, but he won't kill them.

Dregs

Davey Johnson was very young in 1966, and was years away from that fluke season where he hit 43 home runs. Good manager, though. Ron Hunt's greatest skill was his ability to induce hit-by-pitches, and Mogul doesn't model that accurately so...

Third Basemen
1. 1978 Mike Schmidt (SJT)
2. 1964 Ron Santo (HIL)
3. 1989 George Brett (NEW)
4. 1966 Brooks Robinson (DRC)
5. 1954 Al Rosen (FHQ)
6. 2006 Troy Glaus (DRC)
7. 1996 Bobby Bonilla (NEW)
8. 1935 Pepper Martin (DRC)
9. 1935 Pinky Higgins (MCB)
10. 1988 Buddy Bell (DRC)
11. 1906 Harry Steinfeldt (FHQ)
12. 1978 Richie Hebner (SJT)
13. 2009 Alberto Callaspo (MCB)

Sure Things

Listen, I know that Mike Schmidt had a bad year with the Tigres, but he's still Mike Schmidt. If you need a third baseman, he's the guy to get. Besides, even at his worst, he's still a 20-HR player with great defense.

Helpful Players

Ron Santo can field, hit for power, and draw walks. He's not quite elite at any of those skills, but that's still a great combination for your third baseman to have. George Brett is a good hitter, of course, but by 1989 wasn't much of fielder at all, and third base isn't a position where defense doesn't really count. Brooks Robinson is sort of reverse-Brett. Great defense, shaky offense, although his offense has usually been competent enough in the Super-League. Al Rosen is a great player whose bad back destroyed a chance at the Hall of Fame, and it was already starting to get the best of him by '54.

Filler That Won't Kill You

Troy Glaus is past his prime...and can't play third base well, but if you absolutely need a power hitter, he'll do. Bobby Bonilla is also past his prime, and is even worse at fielding, though he can still hit. Pepper Martin can field better, but doesn't have much power.

Dregs

Pinky Higgins is named "Pinky". Unless he's a ghost hunting down Pac-Man, that's not a good sign. Buddy Bell was one of the best third basemen of the '80s, but was worn down by 1988. Harry Steinfeldt will hit about three home runs over a full season. That's bad. Richie Hebner is a bad idea. If you pick Albert Callaspo, you deserve to be relegated.

Shortstops
1. 2001 Alex Rodriguez (SJT)
2. 1982 Robin Yount (DRC)
3. 1939 Joe Cronin (NEW)
4. 1959 Dick Groat (HIL)
5. 1995 John Valentin (NEW)
6. 1955 Pete Runnels (FHQ)
7. 1960 Luis Aparicio (HIL)
8. 1966 Luis Aparicio (DRC)
9. 1989 Greg Gagne (DRC)
10. 2004 Adam Everett (FHQ)
11. 2011 Ramon Santiago (MCB)

Sure Things

A-Rod is the best you're going to do at shortstop.

Helpful Players

Robin Yount isn't very exciting, he's probably not going to hit .300, and probably will top out around 25 home runs, but he's still one of the best shortstops you're going to be able to get. Joe Cronin can hit, but is too old to be a lot of help on defense by 1939. Still, he can loving hit.

Filler That Won't Kill You

Dick Groat isn't going to do a ton at bat, but he's a great glove man, and, depending on your pitchers, that might be more important. John Valentin's only real positive is that he has good power for a shortstop. Pete Runnels is about the same as Dick Groat. The Aparicios have great gloves and no bats.

Dregs

Gagne and Everett are your typical 'scrappy' middle infielders. They can't really hit, and they're not all that great at defense, but they're white and small enough for the average fans to relate to, and so they are beloved, even if they are basically harmful to have on your team. Ramon Santiago is just happy to be here! He's also probably the worst position player in this draft.

Left Fielders
1. 1939 Ted Williams (NEW)
2. 1985 Rickey Henderson (NEW)
3. 1964 Billy Williams (FHQ)
4. 1935 Joe Medwick (SJT)
5. 1968 Willie Horton (MCB)
6. 1978 Willie Stargell (MCB)
7. 2009 Matt Holliday (DRC)
8. 2006 Adam Dunn (DRC)
9. 1937 Charlie Keller (DRC)
10. 2003 Luis Gonzalez (MCB)
11. 1960 Minnie Minoso (HIL)
12. 1929 Lloyd Waner (MCB)
13. 1914 Joe Connolly (HIL)
14. 1906 Jimmy Sheckard (FHQ)

Sure Things

Do I really have to explain Ted Williams to you?

Helpful Players

Rickey Henderson has been up and down in the Super-League, but is usually at least decent. Even the Sharks' Henderson, who had a bad year, still stole 57 bases. Billy Williams isn't going to save your team, but he can provide slightly above-average numbers for a left fielder in the Super-League, and that's pretty good. Joe Medwick has bad patience, but good contact and some power. Willie Horton should be decent, if not exciting. Willie Stargell will give you quality at-bats and questionable defense.

Filler That Won't Kill You

I don't like Matt Holliday that much, but Mogul does. Adam Dunn is Adam Dunn is Adam Dunn. You know what you're getting into if you draft him, lots of walks, even more strikeouts and a bunch of home runs. Charlie Keller is probably just good enough to start in the Super-League. Luis Gonzalez can kind of hit, can kind of play defense, and is kind of good.

Dregs

Minnie Minoso is a bit too old. Lloyd Waner is a singles hitter who isn't even that good of a single hitters playing a corner outfielder position. Joe Connolly is a corner outfielder from the deadball era. That's never good. Ditto Jimmy Sheckard/

Center Fielders
1. 1951 Willie Mays (SJT)
2. 2004 Carlos Beltran (FHQ)
3. 1989 Kirby Puckett (DRC)
4. 1954 Larry Doby (NEW)
5. 1978 Garry Maddox (SJT)
6. 2011 Austin Jackson (MCB)
7. 1960 Jim Landis (HIL)
8. 1966 Paul Blair (DRC)
9. 1981 Mookie Wilson (MCB)

Sure Things

I've heard this Willie Mays kid is pretty good even if, like most Tigres' hitters, he didn't have a good season.

Helpful Players

Carlos Beltran should be a solid combination of power and speed, even if he is a bit injury prone. Kirby Puckett is a great defender in center, but he'll almost certainly hit close to .300.

Filler That Won't Kill You

Larry Doby is a bit old for a center fielder, but he'll be good enough, probably. Garry Maddox's best asset is his defense.

Dregs

Austin Jackson has had one good season in his career. That's not exactly inspiring. Landis, Blair and Wilson will give you defense but no offense.

Right Fielders
1. 1959 Roberto Clemente (HIL)
2. 2004 Lance Berkman (FHQ)
3. 1936 Chuck Klein (SJT)
4. 1968 Al Kaline (MCB)
5. 1982 Jack Clark (HIL)
6. 1978 Bobby Bonds (SJT)
7. 1995 Jose Canseco (NEW)
8. 1982 Chili Davis (HIL)
9. 1972 Ken Singleton (FHQ)
10. 1920 Harry Hooper (NEW)
11. 1911 Harry Hooper (MCB)
12. 1966 Curt Blefary (DRC)

Sure Things

There are no sure things in life or in right field.

Helpful Players

Roberto Clemente, as you may know, was one of the best fielding right fielders ever, and he could hit for contact. On the other hand, he doesn't have a ton of power, and appears to hate walks with a passion. Lance Berkman is iffy on defense, and isn't really great against left-handed pitching. He doesn't have that power, though. Chuck Klein is beloved by the Mogul engine, so plan accordingly. Al Kaline is solid. Just solid. Nothing more, nothing less. Jack Clark can't really field well, but is a fine slugger, though he might be better suited to being a DH. Bobby Bonds was kind of like a prototype of his son, being a great power/speed combination. He didn't have the same sort of drugs-fueled slugging ability that Barry had. His plate discipline was also a bit worse that Barrold's, though that would have been hard to match. On the plus side, he did have a better throwing arm. Jose Canseco will hit home runs. He will not do anything else, but he will give you home runs.

Filler That Won't Kill You

Chili Davis and Ken Singleton are both professional hitters that probably will help your team, but might not due to their young ages. They're probably best-suited to be backups.

Dregs

Hooper and Hooper are copies of the same Hall of Fame player. It is generally conceded that Hooper probably doesn't belong in the Hall of Fame, and he probably should be a Super-League starter. Curt Blefary is just happy to be here. You shouldn't use him unless he's your grandfather or something AND this counts as your birthday gift to him.

Pitching is a bit harder to parse, it's a bit hard to say what pitchers will be good, as that is going to depend on what your defense is like and what kind of park you're playing in. I've ranked what I think are the top thirty, but you're going to want to do 10-15 minutes of research on your own to figure out which of them works out best for you.

Relievers are volatile, just like in real life. A good reliever one year can turn into a bad reliever the next. I'll say this: the Nens are the best available because they get the most strikeouts, and that's the about the only thing you can really count on in a reliever. Fingers is competent, but not dominant. Marshall has a nifty screwball that helps him against left-handers, and can pitch a lot of innings for a reliever. Montogomery is probably a setup man in the Super-League. Hiller is the best available lefty. Isringhausen and Aguilera are both okay, but nothing more than that.

Cthulhu

Hard to say. Usually I'd say replacing the position player should be given higher priority, but if you're seriously considering Juan Cruz, I'd say that is the more dire situation. Then again, taking a reliever not named "Rivera" in the first round would be a waste, and he's not available, so save your reliever picks for the second round and later.

El Moose

Spahn is fine, Coveleski is fine, Wynn is fine (though he's going to decline a fair bit in the Super-League in all likelihood). As for Sain, he's the sort of pitcher that was good in real life, but is doomed in the Super-League. He's a control pitcher and doesn't get a ton of strikeouts and he's a righty. That's a tough combination, especially since Mogul doesn't adjust for historical strikeout rates as well as it might when it comes to older pitchers. He might be worth a flier as a #5 starter, who gets less play, but anything more than that is too much. And there's not enough pine tar in the universe to make Kenny Rogers worthwhile. So, that's one problem.

As for your defense, it's not great, but I've seen a lot worse. I'm not sure I like a version of Julio Franco who's that old to be playing in the middle infielder (And yes, I know he's not that old compared to how old he would get, but he was never any good in the field, and was basically a DH by 1994 in real life.) I also don't get the alignment in your offense. I know that Damon can't really play right, but I'd want Juan Gone in right, Damon in left and Speaker in center. I'd try to get one more big bat in the dispersal draft, and that should help a lot.

Also, you've been unlucky.

So, if I had to pick your draft preferences right now, I'd go:

1. Outfield bat
2. Starting Pitcher
3. Middle infield

theacox

Yeah, the lineup isn't so bad, but the defense is just crushing.

You've got to replace Weeks. You've just got to. I know he has 21 home runs, but it's with a lovely OBP and his defense is killing your pitching. For that matter, Neil Walker isn't really a shortstop, although maybe he could move to second base.

The problem with Lanier and Brecheen is that they're both low-K starters, so that need a better defense to survive. It's not that they're bad, it's just that they're a bad fit. So, yeah, I'd try and get a couple of starters and a shortstop, not necessarily in that order, though.

You'll need to draft another starter, probably with your first pick, but you can live with Ford/Kaat/Grimes/J.Perry as four of your five if you have to.

As for your right fielder situation, I think you need to get a real center fielder, failing that, use Waner, I guess.

Grinnblade

Sure, I'll help you, my lad.

Here's a list of problems you'll need to fix.

1. Lopat isn't good enough to start in the Super-League, probably.

2. I like McDougald, but he probably doesn't hit enough to play third base.

3. Morales must go far, far away from your team.

4. Here's a list of catchers who you should consider for DH: Josh Gibson, Mike Piazza, no other catcher in history.

5. Woodling also isn't good enough.

6. Macier Izturis? Nononononononononono.

7. Start using Mike Mussina.

Actually, your team isn't in bad shape, other than the fact that you traded all of your picks. So, that's kind of an issue because you do need another starting pitcher or two.

Your hitting is fine, actually. Crandall and Floyd aren't exactly optimal, but they're only starting because of injuries to Piazza and Bonilla anyway.

Moose

Kevin Brown was always pretty durable, especially in his younger career. He pitcher 12 complete games in 1993, so I'd lean heavily to it being a fluke.

I know about old Schmidt (though I expect I'll keep him on as a pinch-hitter) and Ron Gant. Can either Reggie Sanders in his career year or old Dwight Evans (who I have, but didn't make it into the Expansion) hold up in right? I have a lot of platooning pieces in Kruk/Dykstra and Irvin/Baylor - can their powers combined make something useful, or should I look for value at 1B/LF in the draft? Does Sal the Barber's age sink him for Mogul? I'm prepared to go in with Ryan/Tanana/Rijo/Antonelli, and draft another starter. Did Mike Jackson just roll badly, or is he doomed to suck?

I don't think Reggie Sanders is going to hit quite enough as a corner outfielder in the Super-League. As for Dwight Evans, it depends how old he is. Really, anything under 37 or so is worth at least a spot on your bench, though.

That said, it wouldn't be a terrible idea to look for value at 1B/LF in the draft. I don't know if that should be your first pick, but it's something to keep an eye out for.

Maglie is kind of a weird case. I think the issue is that Mogul looks at the conditions of that era (this would be the late '40s-late '50s) with its relatively low K rates compared to today, and truly terrible K/BB ratios for pitchers, and comes to the conclusion that pitchers back then weren't very good. They don't have the low ERA rates of the deadball era or the '60s, they don't have the super-high K rates of the steroid era, they don't have the freakish endurance and win totals of the '70s, and so Mogul shafts them.

And that's just a long way of saying that while I might consider giving Maglie another shot, I would definitely draft another pitcher, and I would keep Maglie on a very short leash if you do decide to put him back in your rotation.

As a postscript, if I had more time, I would correct the a bunch of deficiencies in Mogul's rating system, including:

-Deadball pitcher's groundball rates
-Deadball fielder's fielding rates
-'20s Hitters contact rates
-Overhaul of Wartime (1941-1945) ratings
-Postwar Walk and Strikeout rates
-70s endurance ratings (probably)
-60s-80s hitting rates

And probably a few other things. Sadly, that would require editing hundreds of players ratings, and I don't really have the time to do that.

Interesting reading!

This gives me an idea - with 20 (ish) people in the new class, would it be too onerous to draft round by round? If the alternative is enormous lists or wild guesses about who might be available, it would almost be easier, no? Obviously not a pick at a time, just gives us the chance to make three assessments of who might be available.

The problem with that is that it's a pain in the rear end to wrangle 20 owners to get me preferences in the first place. Trying to do it three times would make the draft take about two or three weeks.
