This months National Geographic has a wonderful gallery of football in Africa.

quote:

Miles from the main roads, in rural Africa, soccer balls bounce unevenly. Playing fields are arid, lush, weedy, sandy—any flattish space will do. Goalposts might be made of gathered mahogany or driftwood. Some feet are bare, others shod in fraying sneakers, boots, rubber sandals. Yet children kick and chase handmade, lopsided balls with skill and abandon, competing for pride and joy—for the sheer pleasure of playing.

Has the “beautiful game” ever been lovelier?

Jessica Hilltout doesn’t think so. In 2010, when the World Cup came to Africa for the first time, the Belgium-based photographer set out to see what soccer looked like far from the bright lights and big stadiums. What she found—over seven months, ten countries, and 12,500 miles—was a grassroots game where passion trumped poverty, a do-it-yourself ethic prospered, and one ball could “bring happiness to an entire village.”

In the 30-odd soccer-loving localities she visited, in countries from South Africa to Ivory Coast, balls are spun into being with whatever’s at hand: rag or sock, tire or bark, plastic bag or inflated condom. Each might last days or months on a field of gravel or hard earth. Wherever Hilltout went, she swapped the store-bought balls she kept in her car for these “ingenious little jewels,” most of which were made by children.

Why do the fixtures get so piled up is it just weather postponements?

In Guernsey's case I believe the weather has prevented teams flying out, and they're also through to the FA Vase semi-finals having played in every round (including qualifying rounds).

In the Conference there's been a lot of games postponed due to the weather, Gateshead are having to play home games at other grounds as the pitch at the International Stadium is apparently unplayable - their last game of the season will be played at The Riverside Stadium, which should produce the highest attendance there this year. Braintree have 12 games to play, whilst Telford have 6 - Braintree had a game postponed on Saturday due to waterlogging, and the top of the table clash at Wrexham last night was postponed due to waterlogging, the game at Newport was also in danger at one point too due to the rain. Mansfield & Wrexham have 9 & 8 games left to play respectively, which includes playing each other twice! This is good as we're currently top of the league (on GD) and could do with two draws :)

tl;dr - It's been very wet this year, combined with poo poo pitches at Gateshead, Braintree & Newport there's lots of football to play in the next 31 days. I'd hazard a guess that most gameweeks have had at least 1 game off due to the weather since before Christmas, due to snow/frost/water.

Kidderminster Harriers match suspended after Stockport County fan invades pitch and attacks player

I've just got back from the game, and a section of Stockport County fans have disgraced themselves:

There was a bit of trouble earlier when we opened up the normally empty half of one of the stands behind the goal for home fans - leaving a ~5m gap between home & away fans and 0 stewards. The stewards finally appeared but no police.

The fan who hit Vaughan came from the seating section along the pitch, where all that separates the fans from the pitch is a flimsy padded adboard about 1m high, they were arguing with their own players too - the defeat sends them down to the Conference North, so they're by far the biggest club in England in a regional division.

The game was stopped for 30 mins as the Stockport fans stood on the concourse and refused to take their seats, only when someone thought we should let the police in the stadium did the fans suddenly become placid and we could continue the game.

We then put 3 more past them and missed a penalty :byewhore:

Stockport County were in a league above City at that point, but they have now just been relegated to the Conference North, how times change.

Don't count your chickens yet - Aldershot going in to administration means that Stockport have every chance of winning the AGM Cup next month and staying up - with Aldershot dropping down to the Conference South.

Which is a shame because for having a fan lamping our right back Stockport should be sent to the Northern Premier League IMO.
