You heard right. It also has at least one main character that is not in the anime, and some parts of the story play out rather differently. As far as I know, both the manga and the anime were independently based on the same novel; I have no idea which is closer to the source material (hopefully the anime).

Whoa, I think in the recommend thread maybe people were badmouthing the From the New World anime so I was a bit hesitant to watch it. Honestly I saw the badmouthing first and starting reading it before I even knew what it was. Guess I'll check out the anime after I finish with Kyousougiga.

Haha, yeah they just throw in yuri scenes for what I can tell is no reason.

The best way i can describe it is that the directing is a little flat in the anime version of From the New World, pretty solid show overall though. I do think it might work better as an actual novel, but unless it gets an official translation i'm unlikely to ever read it.

The manga takes perfectly normal designs and makes them into bizarre looking jello-filled balloon bodied anatomically improbable people in vacuum sealed clothing.

Well those couples exist in the story, but they don't throw in the porn scenes like they do in the manga.

For completed SDL manga:
Sumire 16/17-sai (I can't remember which is which)
Dowman Sayman's stuff in general (yeah, I know he makes stuff still, but Nickelodeon & Voynich are done and good.
Ashizuri Aquarium
Angel Densetsu
Mikake no Nijyusei

And for ongoing:
Centaur's Worries
Kuro
Seki-kun
Ryuushika^2
Girls' Group #7

And Hinamatsuri should be mentioned somewhere with a link to its thread.

Man I love Angel Dentsetsu. Even with it's wonky art in the beginning. I wonder how hard it would be to reconstruct Angel Densetsu out of other better looking manga. I feel like you could probably just rearrange Cromartie High and call it a day.

Oh man, thanks for reminding me about this. For those who don't know, it's Faces of a Double Star and the premise is quite a bit similar to Uwagaki, but it's done by the author of Girls' Group No. 7. Basically subtract the romantic comedy angle for the GG#7 author's sense of humor and dreaminess, and mix it with a good bit of bittersweet, and you get that. It's a fantastic manga.

Well I caught up with Centaur's Worries. Are the scanlations up-to-date? If not, how many chapters behind are they? I plan on buying the physical volumes, but I'm just curious.

It's still so good, but I miss the little extra pages from the first volume that talk about how winged people put on shirts, or how centaurs put on pants, etc.

The mini-arc of Hime and Shino getting sucked into medieval europe(I assume) was really weird and out there, but a fun story, even if I'd prefer it be more stories set in their world than ours. I honestly was expecting someone from our world to show up in theirs, but I suspect, assuming they ever get explained, that the aliens are related to our world. The rabbit confirms my suspicions, too

There are 10 volumes released in Japan at the moment, but I have no idea what volume the translations are on.

Also, if we're trying to decide what to put in a new OP, I feel like it would remiss to not at least mention Flying Witch. It's one of the...purest(?) examples of the "genre" I can think of.

drat, I forgot about Flying Witch. I... guess I'd drop Ryuushika from my list in its favor? That's a harsh call, but FW is great.

Punpun's emotional jabs mostly come from being stuck very tightly to the viewpoint character.
It's like that scene in Masturbation Master where our pal Afroman finally gets himself a girlfriend. Sure, objectively it's a pretty nice development and at worst a tiny setback in our protagonist's life. Subjectively, we've been stuck in Kurasawa's head for quite a while now and IT'S THE WORST THING IN THE HISTORY OF EVER!

Agreeing with Carpator that the daily life parts are the most important since they're the primary battleground for Man vs Self. Whenever anything actually dramatic occurs that could change his life Punpun has already lost because Self is a dirty cheating oval office.

That said, LR should probably backlog it 'cause it gets rather smithicide every now and then. Subjectively.

Yesterday because of these posts I read the entirety of Goodnight Punpun in a single day and then I cried for twenty minutes and had bad dreams and spent today emotionally exhausted and if I didn't get some really good news about something unrelated I'd probably still be kinda sad.

I'd still highly recommend it though.

Aaahh, there's too many good SDL mangas!! :negative:

Will definitely include links to "Honored Thread Graduates" such as Truthism and Assassination Classroom in the OP, though.

By the way, there's more Dead Dead Demons D-D-D-D-D-... By the author of Pun Pun which we've been chatting about recently!

EDIT: I know it's a daily life manga, and I know it's a slow burn, but with all this alien invasion stuff, I really have to wonder where he's going with all this.

Goodnight Punpun is really good in the same way Grave of the Fireflies is really good. It will make you feel feelings because its really well written, but you may not want to feel those feelings. It's completely understandable if thats not your thing, but its still great.
