I'll add my few cents to the whole security thing.

There are a multitude of reasons and I am only scratching the surface:

1) Ineptitude (most likely...but kind of dependent on the next few)
2) Costs (Security is expensive...anyone in the field knows...you pay for the poo poo out the nose.) Why? Because they can/cost of doing business tax.
3) Serviceability

One of those where to begin type things...and not an expert on CANBUS but seems to me the easiest thing would be to isolate part of the bus/network in a key off environment. But that was probably nixed since it requires yet another gateway into the network. Or perhaps a SOC that cost an extra $1. Another cost. Another item to service. Another failure point. Another harness for water intrusion, etc. etc. to increase warranty claim potential.

Ok, so say they did that. Let's make it hack proof.

Well, every layer you add on adds risk. And that risk is not shooting yourself in the foot (Speaking from vendor/manufacturer side). There is a certain amount of terror trusting a set of private encryption keys. And when I say trust, making sure the vendor or whoever it is has some repository so you and a ton of co-workers can rely on and won't be exploited (Don't worry, it eventually will). Also, take into account some Podunk town. Or, rights to service. Etc. Again, more factors.

I can keep bloviating. Long story short, probably about a couple percent that care sat in a meeting and said "WTF??" type stuff and were blown off. How quickly? If it involves money and integration with a vendor it is around a five second decision. Few minor design changes would nip a lot of it...but it will always exist.

But hey, at the end of the day it is all greed. They are making money off of you with their in-car networks. So, gently caress them, time to pay the price you say. Unfortunately, you all do with higher insurance premiums since they pass the buck.

no one bloviates like you do
